Boscov’s is anti-Christmas

Boscov’s, a $1 billion department store chain based in Pennsylvania, is a 91-year-old, privately-held company.

It “is focused on bringing the latest styles and trends in fashion and home decor” to you.  But it won’t sell you a Christmas card.  A reader writes: “Boscov’s displays gift cards for sale throughout the store. The Christmas gift card only says “Merry”, because any reference to the word “Christmas” is banned at Boscov’s. However, it is side-by-side with a “HAPPY HANUKKAH” card. Please encourage all Christians to boycott Boscov’s. Please help spread the word soon, as Boscov’s makes the bulk of their annual profits selling the very Christmas gifts they refuse to acknowledge.”

Thanks for the info John. I’m a long way from Pennsylvannia, though.

Last week my wife and I went to a restaurant and found it closed.  Being Sunday the signed explained the owners were Christian and thought it appropriate not to do business on that day.

I was very impressed they would make this sacrifice for their faith.

My wife and I now try to eat regularly at this restaurant, during the week.

Thank you, Mr. Beck, for honouring and saluting their faith.

Indeed, in my circles (Dutch Reformed), such practices - trying to avoid working and patronizing businesses, on the Lord’s Day - are the way of things; perhaps the restaurant owners were also from the Reformed tradition (Presbyterian, some Baptists, etc.).  In any case, this seems to me to be a Reformed distinctive - not entirely, by any means, but largely so.  In traditionalist Reformed circles, people don’t get together at a restaurant after Sunday church services (as was the case in the evangelical circles to which I used to belong); instead, people may get together at someone’s house, or at the church… But not out, at a restaurant or pub, somewhere…

This can be quite challenging sometimes, planning, ensuring one has enough groceries, gasoline for vehicles, etc., but it is worth it; it really drives home the notion that the Sabbath Day really, truly is the Lord’s, not ours - though it is intended as a rest for us - “the Sabbath was made for men, and not men for the Sabbath”, as the Good Book reminds us…

I concede, when travelling long distances occasionally on some Sundays, or when required occasionally to work on Sundays, I cannot keep as closely to this as I would otherwise, but I try to most of the time, and that is what matters, I believe…

Hello Will:

Nice to meet you. Yes, it just so happens the owners are reformed Presbyterian, as I am. Though, the restaurant owners don’t attend the same church as my wife and I.

Hey, anybody know where a guy can sin around here?

We must be driving our post-Christian European brothers nuts with the “God talk”?

Evidently.  Too bloody bad!  wink

You are basing this on the fact that Christmas or Holiday cards are not being sold.  Most of the store locations are at malls, walk down to the Hallmark store and purchase your cards there.  Aren’t their bigger issues in the world than who acknowledges or who beleives in what religion?  There is a war going on that was started by a group of people who took their religion & beleifs to the extreme.  We all have our own beleifs and that should be okay as long as we all beleive in something.  We are all human and all different.  I try to teach my kids tolerance.  It makes it difficult to explain when we see this on our local news.  Especially at this time of year.  Isn’t this a time for peace and good will towards men without judging & name-calling?  Just a thought.

I work at Boscovs. We sell Merry Christmas gift cards, in 3 different Christmas styles. Two have Christmas themes, with Christmas photographs, and there’s one that says “B Merry”.

You act like the only style you can choose from are “HAPPY HANUKKAH” or “B MERRY”. That’s not true at all.

When we answer the phone, we say “Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas” as instructed by our managers. I can buy Christmas wrapping paper, Christmas trees, Christmas decorations, angels, nativity settings, etc from Boscovs.

But because a “reader” said she couldn’t find a Christmas gift card, we should ban the store?

You are uneducated about what you are posting on the web. I am a christian too. It’s a disgrace to me that you’d agree with banning the store I work with because you aren’t smart enough to do your own research.
