So - who do we want to win the World Cup final out of Italy and France? More importantly, why?

You’re supposed to care about trivia like football teams bought and sold like slaves and cusine when it comes to nations. Forget about the hundreds of generations of evolution your ancestors bequeathed you. That is not important.

“Canada sucks.”
So spoke Michael Latartara, 9, who waved an Italian flag while walking down St. Clair Avenue West at Dufferin Street yesterday, following Italy’s defeat of Australia, 1-0, in World Cup action.
“Why does Canada suck?” I asked.
“Because they’re no good at soccer.”
“They?”
They? They? To whom could they possibly be referring? Oh that they!
They who carved this God-forsaken, frozen hinterland out of the bush, ex nihilo. Let’s see, it was the Italians that stood with the Jews during the Christie Pits riot in 1933. It is the Italians who stand with the Jews, Ukrainians, Chinese, Japanese, blacks and whoever else has a hand-out seeking compensation for ‘their’ past wrongdoing. It was Italian whining regarding family re-unification, in the fifties, that in large part led to the abandoning of the Imperial preference vis-a-vis immigration.
The three boys are born in Canada. “The blood is Italian,” the grandmother explained.
‘Nuff said.
France, definitely France.

Of course, it should have been plain to anyone that there is a definite subtext to my posting. Let me make it a little clearer for those who missed it - should the Italians prevail over France, what will the effect be on the French national mood. What could this mean for their elections next year?

I’ll state my preference. My heart says France - I love their brand of soccer, and as players, Ribery and Zidane are magnificent. But my head is definitely with Italy.

Zidane has been sent off for a headbutt, an extremely undignified way to end a great international career.
The Berber Zidane passes as white, but the wind up from the Italian that promted the violence just had to be racial, either pointing out Zizu’s North African origins, or possibly those of most of his team-mates.
The headbutt will be turned on whitey and Zidane vindicated, just wait and see.

Italy win on penalties, than goodness. The media wet-dream of a France victory didn’t happen.
France shoulda’ picked an all black team for the final like the Texas A&M basketball team back in the sixties. Think of the movies that could have been made.

Did you see the massive celebration in Australia after Italy defeated the Australian side? Very offensive. However, nothing could be worse than the victory of a team of Third-World invaders.
It is good that Italy won.

My compliments to Salopian, btw, who beat me to it by three minutes with the observation that the Italian must have made a racist remark. As for Salopian’s visionary announcement that he would take the rap for Zidane’s little moment of double-digitry, I am in awe.
