If I was in Norman’s position I might want to take a more cautious view of the liberal credentials of the European Court of Justice - and also of the Maltese government’s likely willingness to tie me up in indefinite court action in Malta, if possible.

I must agree with Guessedworker of “Majority Rights” when he expressed some skepticism concerning Lowell’s opinion that his incitement case would be laughed out of the European courts.  Lowell is correct that the case is absurd and logically suspect.  However, Lowell is incorrect in thinking that this matters to the EU filth.

If they want to censor certain ideas, they will do so, and any sort of logical argument to the contrary will be ignored. It is about power, not about what is right.

Vincent Reynouard, 39, good Catholic, loving dad, gentle as the day is long, never did a thing wrong in his whole life, wouldn’t harm a sparrow, just an ordinary guy, got himself into the crosshairs of ... certain interests ... and as a result is convicted of expressing an opinion of which the government does not approve, and is sentenced to jail for one year in Belgium, plus one year in France, = two years total, without possibility of parole in either country, and fines totalling 90,000 euros (30,000 imposed by the Belgian court, 60,000 by the French). 

Pretty draconian punishments to be meted out to a 39-year-old guy who is not exactly “rolling in dough,” who has a wife and seven children to take care of, whose only crime was expressing an opinion certain interests don’t like.  Expressing an opinion.  That’s all he did.  An opinion certain interests don’t like and have the political clout to punish.

So this dad of seven has to spend the next two years in jail — in jail! — not to mention bankrupted by crushing fines a large portion of which are damages that go right into the grasping fingers and gold-stuffed pockets of ... certain interests.

The plaintiffs are the ... well, they’re certain interests.

This victim of those ... interests ... says a few words in a video, Prison ferme pour délit d’opinion ("Prison without possibility of parole for the crime of expressing an opinion"), which I’ve just transcribed and translated below: 

First part of the video:  a recording of a news bulletin announcing two criminal sentences and warrants for the convicts’ immediate re-arrests and incarcerations:

«Deux hommes ont été condamnés pour négationnisme:  le tribunal correctionnel de Bruxelles a condamné Sigfried Verbeke et le français Vincent Reynouard à un an de prison ferme.  Les deux hommes avaient diffusé des brochures, et des dépliants, et des pamphlets dans lesquels ils minimisaient l’ampleur, voire même l’existence de l’Holocauste.  Les deux hommes avaient déjà été condamnés antérieurement pour des faits similaires. [I didn’t get a few words in here] en outre d’une amende de quelque vingt-cinq mille euros.  Le tribunal a ordonné leur arrestation immédiate.»

Second part of video:  Reynouard says a few words:

Je m’appelle Vincent Reynouard.  J’ai 39 ans.  Je suis père de sept enfants.  Et à l’heure actuelle je suis en fuite, car un mandat d’arrêt a été lancé contre moi en Belgique et très probablement aussi dans toute l’Europe.  Le 19 juin j’ai été condamné à un an de prison ferme et 30,000 euros d’amende par un tribunal de Bruxelles.  Ce tribunal a en outre ordonné mon arrestation immédiate.  Motif:  j’ai fait distribuer des tracts dans lesquels je dénonce le myth des chambres-à-gaz homicides et de l’Holocaust.  Une semaine plus tard, pour les mêmes raisons, j’ai été condamné en France à un an de prison ferme et environ 60,000 euros à payer.  Nos adversaires disent que nous nions l’évidence, que nos thèses sont absurdes et contredites par mille preuves.  Mais dans le même temps ils nous pourchassent alors que nos moyens d’expression sont proche de zéro.  Ce décalage entre ce discours et ces actes démontre que la vérité et de notre côté, car on ne met pas en prison quelqu’un qui a fait distribuer 150 ou 200 tracts.  Réfléchissez bien, messieurs, mesdames:  quand on n’a que la prison pour se débarrasser d’un contradicteur, c’est q’on n’a aucun argument valable à lui opposer.

Reynouard says a few words:

My name is Vincent Reynouard.  I’m 39.  I’m the father of seven children.  And at the present moment I am fleeing [or “I am a fugitive"]:  a warrant for my arrest has been issued in Belgium and probably throughout Europe. 

On June 19 a Brussels court sentenced me to a year in prison without parole and a fine of 30,000 euros.  The court also ordered my immediate arrest.  Reason:  I distributed tracts in which I denounce the myth of the execution gas chambers and the Holocaust.  The following week in France, for the same reasons I was sentenced to a year in prison without parole, and about 60,000 euros to pay.

Our adversaries say that we deny the evidence, that our ideas are absurd and contradicted by a thousand proofs.  But at the same time they hunt us down, notwithstanding that our means of expression are close to zero.  This inconsistency between what they say and their behavior shows that the truth is on our side, for you don’t put people in jail for handing out 150 or 200 tracts.  Think about it, ladies and gentlemen:  if the only way you’re able to get rid of someone who questions you is by imprisoning him, you must not have a single valid argument to use against him.

In another message posted elsewhere, he ends by saying,

Je termine en vous demandant de ne pas abandonner mon héroïque épouse.  [I finish by asking you not to abandon my heroic wife.] Elle n’a jamais récriminé; elle a tout accepté; elle se bat magnifiquement.  [She has never made accusations; she has been all-accepting; she fights wonderfully.] Je bénis Dieu de l’avoir rencontrée.  [I’m thankful to God for having met her.] Elle mérite votre aide et votre réconfort.  [She deserves your support and your help.] Pour le faire, vous pouvez:  [If you wish, it is possible to: ]

The fact is, its disgusting that President Bush is visiting China at he same time the Chinese government is engaging in a campaign to commit genocide against the Tibetan people?
