The raw nerve of the liberal democrat

Steve Sailer has an article at The American Conservative about how deeply Kerry was troubled by the information, statistically deduced by Charles Murray and Steve himself, that Bush has the higher IQ.

When Kerry insouciantly replied to Brokaw as if he didn’t care what he scored on a 90-minute exam 38 years ago, as if he believed that all that he had accomplished since then was the proper measure of the man, I was impressed.

But then Kerry broke the spell by quibbling about my research, “I don’t know how they’ve done it, because my record is not public. So I don’t know where you’re getting that from.” Evidently, IQ mattered to Kerry, too.

A few days later, Brokaw went on Don Imus’s radio show and revealed just how much it bugged Kerry that I had said Bush probably had a slightly higher IQ. After the cameras had stopped rolling, Kerry had rationalized to Brokaw, “I must have been drinking the night before I took that military aptitude test.”

This little snippet is incredibly revealing not so much only of Kerry but of the post-modern liberal. The defining characteristic of such men is their vanity, although in Kerry’s case one would have to concede that there are men far worse than him on that scale among the Democrats.

The vanity of the cosmopolitan, the moral pretensions, the smugness and the sense of sheer superiority define the modern western liberal. He cares deeply … deeply!  He cares deeply for the poor, of course, and the underprivileged and for people of colour. His life has a keen moral purpose driven by his overwhelming sense of equality of all men (particularly all men of all races) and by an unflinching belief in his superiority when compared with lesser conservative mortals (that’s us) who are given to dark and bigoted passions.

The liberal spans nations and peoples, he stands for humanity, he is a messenger of God (Karl God), his cause is noble. He believes he is not a fanatic.  He is, in fact, an extremely moderate man.  He is not divisive.  On the contrary, he unites all men and women - and those who are neither, although uniting those who are neither has an unfortunate medical history.

His intelligence is one of his greatest strengths. It has also been honed in the elite institutions and the homes of modern liberalism that gave the western peoples their finest gifts – feminism, multiculturalism, diversity, political correctness, minority-ism, the worship of victim-hood cult etc.  Without these where would we be?  No don’t answer that.  You’ll spoil the effect.

The science of IQ is bunk to the modern liberal democrat. How could it not be? It says the races differ in their average IQs. Isn’t that just 19th century racial bigotry disguised as science? His overwhelming sense of morality compels him to dismiss such “science” as bunk.

But then, what is his own intelligence? Or is it meaningless to talk of intelligence? No it isn’t. Intelligence matters, suddenly. The liberal democrat believes in the deep intellectual inferiority of the regnant, bigoted, reactionaries that he regularly fights his political battles with (see John Ray’s post, “Confessions of a cultural elitist”). Those right-wing neanderthals are clearly, clearly of an inferior intellect than him. They simply could not, NOT have better minds! No, it does not require analysis – it is obvious!

The above, I believe, affords no more than a suggestion of the actual, towering, self-proclaimed and vacuous moral and intellectual superiority of these men (and women). I have long believed that the nature of liberal politics is wholly revealing – not just in terms of the interests that it serves but also of liberal-minded men and women per se. Their minoritarian support for this or that position … their promotion of certain phenomena from which their own self-interest is conspicuously absent … their vanities … their egotism … their narcissism … their moral pretensions … all of it is right there in glorious technicolour, naked to the eye, plain to the deaf, dumb and blind, and available to be panned ad infinitum and without mercy.

Don’t keep it waiting.

Arts & Letters Daily is linking to a Chronicles Review article on a related topic: why are universities so heavily staffed by those of a liberal mein.  Go to http://chronicle.com/temp/reprint.php?id=56a4b06e77oshwaiq5psszuc2gti5neb

The writer, Mark Bauerlein, concludes that a combination of a False Consensus Effect and the Law of Group Polarization (formulated by a pol & law prof at Chicago, Cass R.Sunstein http://www.littlemag.com/mar-apr01/cass6.html) is responsible.  FCF dictates that profs only meet the liberal minded - surely that’s everybody, then, isn’t it?  LGP says that once accepted the most extreme ideas tend to gain untoward influence.  In this scenario, perhaps, there’s something of a Dawkinsian struggle of memes.  Conservative ones die out at the outset.

These are neat formulations.  For them to be the whole story, though, requires them to be better than the other explanations.

I once asked a leftie what New Labour offered besides culture war.  The answer came back: redistribution and human rights around the world.  In other words, “Well, er ... we are taking your money away from you, doncha know, and we feel frightfully sorry for the world’s poor.” From this I adduce that culture war is indeed pretty much all there is - or all they really care deeply, deeply about.

Being an extreme idea, culture war must therefore have come in via the LGP scenario. So Gramsci’s Long March and his “organic intellects” and their political converts (or “captured intellects”, see: http://www.paracelsusclinic.com/articles/display.asp?ID=6) are simply victorious ideas, not actual revolutionary facts on the ground.  Likewise, the powerfully influential Jewish philosophers of the Frankfurt School - including Walter Benjamin, Georg Lukacs, Theodor Adorno, Herbert Marcuse, Max Horkheimer, Erich Fromm, Leo Lowenthal, Norbert Elias, Friedrich Pollock, Karl Mannheim, the non-Marxist socialist Julius Kraft and the economist Gottfried Salomon - were, in their revolutionary goals, unsuccessful men.  It’s just that, being extreme, their ideas have gained undue currency.

In the end, the choice here is between mechanicity - blind natural laws - and human agency.  I believe in mechanicity in human consciousness in its place.  But I am loathe to put at one lawful remove from the process of cultural revolution the men who invented it.

And where does this leave liberals?  As craven vessels filled with ideas the action and origin of which they neither acknowledge nor wish fully to comprehend.
