ANOTHER BLOG! This one about Marx and Engels

I am sure that I will get the nickname of the “insane blogger” soon. Yes. I have just started ANOTHER blog. How better to start the New Year? This one is intended to have only a limited lifespan, however. Its purpose is to put on display all the quotes from Marx and Engels that Marxists hope you never find out about. It is truly astonishing what those guys really believed. They had more in common with Hitler than with anyone else. The most recent post shows that Marx and Hitler agreed about the Jews. See here. I will post to the blog only as interesting material for it becomes available to me but Dirk’s file gives me plenty to start with. I hope to add new quotes every day for quite a while.

Thanks for posting this, which is interesting and of course potentially of use to students and researchers. Many of us here will have known vaguely for some time that this pair harbored these particular attitudes about Jews and certain non-German races of Central Europe but never saw the exact quotes before now. Engels’ nationalism (wanting to recover Alsace-Lorraine for his country) I find completely normal, healthy, and admirable. What to make of the rest of it (including Marx’s views of the Jews) given the other opinions and writings of these two, I don’t know. As all the world knows, mass-killings of members of groups, ethnicities, races, and nationalities deemed to stand in the way of Communism’s advance is something Reds have never shrunken from.

The linked blog doesn’t demonstrate any significant similarities between the Nazis’ and Marx’s views of the Jews. The blogger interprets the quoted passage from Marx out of its broader context (ignoring “the” Emancipation, which was in progress and a major topic of debate throughout Europe) and draws highly tendentious conclusions. For instance:

The quoted passage is consistent with such a belief, I suppose, but the passage itself provides no basis for such a conclusion. In the original German, Marx speaks only of what is expected to happen upon the Emancipation of European Jewry; there are no terms of approbation offered in respect of any of the results that he purported to anticipate. Indeed, the passage could just as easily be interpreted as pro-Jewish—as an attempt to sell the Emancipation to the gentile population as something that is good for them, by playing to their anti-Jewish stereotypes and prejudices. Given that Marx was himself Jewish, that is a much more plausible interpretation, . And given Marx’s Jewish identity, the suggestion that Marx desired the physical extermination of the Jews is utterly preposterous.

Also, it is important to remember that, viewed from the gentile perspective, the Emancipation was a quid-pro-quo; the Jewish Question would be resolved by the execution of an agreement under which (1) the Jews would become citizens of the nations they lived within, just like the nominally Christian residents, and (2) the Jews would assimilate as individuals and thereby dissolve the Jewish group. As it happened, the Jewish community failed to live up to its end of the bargain, and the Judenfrage remained unresolved into the 20th century.

In this regard, the blogger’s observation

...that the title of Marx’s essay in German was “Zur Judenfrage”—which is exactly the same expression (“Jewish question”) that Hitler used in his famous phrase “Endloesung der Judenfrage” (“Final solution of the Jewish question”)....

displays gross historical ignorance. The fact that they both used the term is of no more significance than the fact that two Americans speak of “Social Security” or “affirmative action” or “immigration”. Everyone participating in political debate in Germany used that term to describe the conundrum posed by the existence of a nation within a nation. The fact that both Hitler and Marx referred to the “Judenfrage” amounts to an observation that they both lived in Germany.
