An Anglospheric triumphCountries rated as good places to do business are good generally: “Doing Business in 2006 was published today (midnight GMT), tracking the state of red tape across the world… There are many wise things to be said about this data, and I’ll try to say them over the next few days. But since this is a blog let me go for the cheapest headline. The top ten business environments in the world, as measured by the ‘Ease of Doing Business index’: 1. New Zealand; 2. Singapore; 3. United States; 4. Canada; 5. Norway; 6. Australia; 7. Hong Kong; 8. Denmark; 9. United Kingdom; 10. Japan [Note that fully half of them are English-speaking and two out of the three Asian ones have had strong English influence] Posted by jonjayray on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 at 09:14 AM in Business & Industry Comments:2

Posted by Steve Edwards on September 14, 2005, 11:35 AM | # You see, Fred, John sincerely believes you can have an Anglosphere without any Anglos. He believes in a “sphere” that will somehow speak “Anglo” even if all Anglos have been replaced by Tamils. Anglos and Tamils are identical, you see. That’s why he is also indifferent to the replacement of Cockneys by Bengalis - Who cares? You can always house-train the Bengalis! So long as official government policy has “assimilation” written on it somewhere, Bengalis will soon be indistinguishable from Cockeys! 4
Posted by Martin Hutchinson on September 14, 2005, 12:20 PM | # I’ve never found it possible to house-train Cockneys. Fortunately, in the old days, they were never allowed to run the place. I would expect Britain to slip steadily in league tables of business ethics now that they are running it. 5

Posted by stari_momak on September 14, 2005, 10:41 PM | # One thing that’s fascinated me about cockneys is that they have been able to maintain their hold on certain economic niches. Fruit and veg stalls in London, for example, and licensed Blackcab driving. This in spite of economic competition from immigrant groups with supposedly superior business accumen. This is of course the opposite of major US cities, where both these economic niches long ago went to foreigners. How is this possible? Any guesses? 7

Any guesses?” (—Stari) It’s because, as the great Scots churchman John Knox said, a branch of a race (in this case, the Anglo-Saxons) that separates itself from the main trunk degenerates to the crab. 8
Posted by Alexei on September 15, 2005, 04:45 AM | # Good places to do business—for whom? The average American will surely find doing business in Japan much more difficult than the average Japanese. It’s not the same the other way round though. Next entry: On the Ground in New Orleans: Reporter Christopher Drew Previous entry: A small victory for Prof. Fraser |

Irrelevant, John, if the race is going to change as part of the whole deal. Would rather the Anglosphere do as Japan does: avoid race-replacement and content itself with tenth place in the listing.
If the race is going to change, I don’t want it. I’ll take hundredth place instead.
