Ancient Greek Poetry and MusicModern classical studies, philology and archaeology are shedding light on certain aspects of antiquity which would make classicists of all former periods jealous. Recently, two philologists began work on a project to recreate the singing method of Homeric poetry on the basis of the classic texts, using a recreation of the original phormix used by bards of the period. What did the Iliad actually sound like as it was being recited? Probably something not too different from this: The same group also has recreated two instruments of the day, the kithara and the aulos. The kithara is an ancient type of lyre; the aulos a wood-wind. In 1996, Christodoulos Halaris released a CD called “Music of Ancient Greece”—which was basically ancient Greek music/odes that were translated into modern musical notation and then recorded. It’s HIGHLY recommended.
