Black-white student room-shares raise some black student grades - whites get to be less prejudiced

exploring prejudice reduction through intergroup contact. Specifically, I am interested in how automatically activated racial attitudes are affected by successful interracial relationships, and vice versa.

Natalie may or may not be room-sharing with her gris eminence, Russell Fazio, but she certainly likes to work with him. His research ...

centers upon the study of attitudes. ... We have proposed a model of attitudes as associations in memory between the attitude object and one’s evaluation of the object. Our concern has been with the likelihood that such evaluations will be activated automatically from memory upon the individual’s encountering the attitude object. ... In particular, the research has focused upon (a) the influence that accessible attitudes have upon attention, categorization, judgment and, ultimately, behavior, and (b) the functional value of such attitudes. The implications of this view of attitudes are currently being examined in the domain of prejudice. The role of both automatic and more motivated, controlled processes, on race-related judgments and behavior are under investigation. We also are conducting research on the implicit development of attitudes via classical conditioning, attitude formation via exploratory behavior, and implicit measures of attitude.

So what these intellectual lovebirds are setting out to do is prove that white prejudice is learned and can be unlearned. Their latest two papers, which relate to studies conducted in 2001 and 2002, are:-

Shook, N. J., & Fazio, R. H. (2008). Roommate relationships: A comparison of interracial and same-race living situations. Group Processes and Intergroup Relations, 11, 425-437.

Shook, N. J., & Fazio, R. H. (2008). Interracial roommate relationships: An experimental test of the contact hypothesis. Psychological Science, 19, 717-723.

However, ISO’s press office marketed the Shook-Fazio papers thus:-

Black college students get better grades with white roommate [some of them, anyway - Ed]

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new study of college freshman suggests that African Americans may obtain higher grades if they live with a white roommate.

A detailed study of students at a large, predominantly-white university revealed that while living with a white roommate may be more challenging than living with someone of the same race, many Black students appear to benefit from the experience.

For African American students, this could translate into as much as 0.30-point increase in their GPA in their first quarter of college.

White students, on the other hand, were affected more by the academic ability of their roommate than by their race.

While the study results may seem one-sided, earlier studies by these researchers and others reinforces the value of students’ experience with members of different races and ethnic groups.

... The findings suggest that the interaction between a white and an African American student may help orient these minority students to a predominantly white university, Shook said. By living with their white counterparts, the African American students are finding someone with whom they can study and learn from in ways other African American students cannot offer.

So here are a couple of psyches whose funding would swirl clock-wise increasingly quickly if they ever came up with results that did not match their ... ah .... erm ... liberal prejudices. How amazing, then, that they can report such fortunate news.

Here’s more:-

Researchers from Ohio State University and Virginia Commonwealth University found that nearly one in every six interracial roommate relationships failed, meaning at least one roommate moved out, by the end of the first quarter. But African American students who were paired with a white roommate performed better academically than did those with a same-race roommate.

These African American students may be better adjusted to college because they live with someone who can help them learn about the challenges and norms of a different environment, said Natalie Shook, lead author of the study, who started the work as a graduate student at Ohio State.

“It’s already known that interracial roommate relationships are more difficult than same-race relationships. But despite the problems, we’ve shown that there are benefits in how well Black students perform academically,” said Shook, who is now an assistant professor of psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University.

By living with their white counterparts, the African American students are finding someone with whom they can study and learn from in ways other African American students cannot offer. [meaning there is more emphasis on work and less emphasis on going out to find a white girl to hump really, really urgently - Ed]

OK, OK, but what about the white male students who looked into Natalie’s clear blues and found themselves saying, “Yeah, oh well, I suppose ... I mean, OK ... I guess I’ll do it”, and learned to love blacks instead?

... white students’ grades were virtually unaffected [what does “virtually” mean? Ed)] by the race of their roommate. White students earned higher GPAs when assigned to someone who was more successful academically.

... Even though the race of their roommate did not affect them academically, the researchers believe that living with an African American benefits whites in another way.

Fazio said previous research suggests that many of the automatically activated stereotypes that whites may harbor about African Americans, consciously or subconsciously, dissolve when they interact extensively with someone of another race. This interaction not only helps white students get over their initial fears and prejudices, it also affects comfort level with other minorities in the future.

“It is definitely not easy for students at first; it is more stressful and more difficult to live in an interracial situation than in same race situations. But if people stick with it, their racial attitudes improve and it definitely outweighs any initial difficulty. This is just one way we can overcome our misconceptions and biases and learn to appreciate our differences earlier on in life,” Shook said.

So, these two god-players have solved the riddle of the black-white gap and evil white prejudice. It’s all about white racism. Aren’t they a wunnerful couple? Surely they should be talking to the Ford Foundation. Let’s not spoil it by mentioning test-bias. Yes, I know it’s a coincidence how these two nice folks just happen to prove their own case so splendidly. And yes, blacks had to have a minimum IQ of 115 to get any benefit from rooming with a white - crotch-grabbers need not apply. Meaning that only perhaps 16,000 students in the current black intake (mimimum IQ about 92) could benefit from this idea if it went nationwide.

But let us not be ungenerous and ask:-

1. What proportion of the total 2700 room-shares were volunteers?

2. What proportion of the five-sixths of those room-shares were female pairs. Presumably more than half, since female students substantially outnumber males.

3. What proportion of them were white liberals and could never bring themselves to fail, no matter what their room-mate did in the basin?

4. What proportion were whites conservative males who realised that diversity cannot be protested, and there was only one way to get to graduation day?

5. What proportion of students tell the truth to psychology researchers about their racial feelings, given the near universality of anti-racism on campus?

6. What proportion of the sub-115 IQ blacks who bombed were more prejudiced and racist towards whites after the study than they were before?

... and so on.

No study that starts from a presumption of exclusive white evil can yield true and usable results. Natalie Shook and Russell Fazio set about proving their own left-racist opinions of whites. In another time they would be spotted by the department head a mile off and kicked out. But that was then. Shook and Fazio, unfortunately, are now.

I was assigned a Black roommate in college many years ago. Unfortunately, the Black friends she brought around were not of the highest quality. One of them attempted to rape one of our other roommates (a suite dorm), another White student. Not a good experience. Have no idea how this affected grades of all concerned, but it sure put relationships between the White students and her on a completely different level.

So when Whites and blacks are forced to reside together, blacks benefit -Whites don’t….

Maybe it’s too early for me and I’m reading this wrong, but doesn’t that lean more toward our point of view, basically.?

Next time let the researchers study the effects with THREE roommates. Two black, one White.

I am guessing the last subject subsumes numbers 1 and 3 and certain predictable varieties of 2. Chapter 5 of CoC gives an excellent analysis of this phenomenon.

On this same page she solicits volunteers. Yes, I would like to sign up so that I can be diagnosed with an emotional disorder

BTW, I’m not sure if this is assortive recruiting, but her female grad students aren’t that shabby either.

Jews are the smartest, so shouldn’t they be sure to pair all these Negroes up with them in college to really get the Negro GPA up? And think of the benefits to Jews if doing that got rid of Jewish anti-Negro prejudice — we’d start seeing all the women who miscegenate with Negroes in all these Jewish-made Hollywood movies (and all this Jewish-made black-on-blonde porn) being identified as Jewish. In some respects, CC strikes me an internet version of GLR. He’s a robust defender of Whites, and he’s not afraid to mince words. Having to compete in a more demanding environment raises your game. So what! The liberal elite seem to have an unfailing talent for mistaking banal, and obvious truths for profound revelation. This is symptomatic of their utter intellectual mediocrity.

The only “prejudice” that whites harbour toward blacks is the sometimes fatal one carefully crafted by the mass entertainment industry, that every black person who ostensibly appears to be dangerous and undesirable, is in fact, a noble gallant with a university degree in his back pocket. I notice Mz Shook doesn’t have anything much to say about how mixing with blacks affects white grades. We get to be “less prejudiced”. Being less prejudiced doesn’t put bread on my table.

I had the opposite experience. When I was living exclusively within my own ethnic and cultural background, I was not racist.

After living very closely with people from another ethnic background, I became racist against that particular ethnic background.

I concluded that it is not race or the color of skin that pits people against each other but rather behaviour, customs and traditions. Due to the behaviour, customs and traditions of a particular group that I was living with, I became unfavorably disposed towards people from that group, even when they did not portray the particular behavioural traits that I found unsavory.

Had I never moved to a different country and had I not lived with that particular ethno-cultural group, I would probably feel positive about them today. But I don’t, because I lived with them and didn’t like their ways.

It all comes down to culture.

Dienekes Pontikos says a person who’s 1/32 Greek by ancestry and 31/32 Nigerian can be considered Greek. But he doesn’t go on to explain how it is that taking several million individuals with exactly these ancestral proportions — 1/32 Greek, 31/32 Nigerian — and putting them together to form a country will never, no matter how you educate, train, or cultivate them, produce an approximation of Greece. They will produce only an approximation of Nigeria.

How can that be, if “it all comes down to culture”?

Both Greece and Nigeria are naturally beautiful countries but if I had to choose to live in either of the two, I wouldn’t be able to. I prefer to stick to my own country and my own people and my own ancient civilization and culture that has been preserved for centuries, millenia even, and yet adapted very well to the modern tech age, in which we are a major contributor. With all due respect to present day Greeks (what are they known for these days? restaurants?), and Nigerians.

Perhaps genese make the culture or culture, over time, makes the genes. Whatever it is. I’m happy with both of mine. Thanks Ma and Pa!
