Chivalry in a chivalry-less world

It must be hard being a feminist. You preach about the equality of the sexes (sorry, genders). You give lectures explaining in great depth the oppressive nature of marriage and courtship. You heckle happily married neighbours into admitting that they’re “socially unfulfilled”. You take part in group readings of Virginia Woolf. And at the end of it all, some bloke with a belt comes along and upsets the whole (progressive, gender-free) applecart:

A man caught on camera trying to throttle a teenage train passenger has claimed he was defending a woman who was being taunted by a gang.

CCTV footage captured Greg Kirby, 26, looping a belt around the 17-year-old as the boy’s horrified friends looked on.

Kirby, an IT worker who has had no previous convictions, spoke out after he admitted affray and assault causing actual bodly harm at Portsmouth Crown Court yesterday.

Whenever I am confronted with some sort of a commotion, I like to imagine what impact it would have had on a pre-modern, or even just a pre-60s, mind. In this case, I dare say the lady whose honour had been impinged would have explained the situation to the constabulary and Mr. Kirby would have been congratulated on acting manfully. The youths would have probably been assigned some old-fashioned community service*.

Back in the real world, our putative hero of the hour has been dragged to court, whilst the yobbish teens have no doubt spent the past few hours having their egos massaged by a self-esteem counsellor and demanding their sacrosanct Human Rights. For once, Women’s Rights seem to have taken a back seat.

Is there not something paradoxical about a society which insists on protecting its womenfolk from age old wisdom about their place in the world, of the sort proffered by the almost sacked Professor Larry Summers, whilst allowing young thugs to abuse them willfully, and even punishing those who dare intervene? Can a society which refuses to tolerate a scientist speculating about the lower mathematical IQs of women whilst happily tolerating casual harassment on the tube make any claim to moral consistency?

The answer is that modern feminist liberalism eschews any sort of logic or notions of moral decency in its mania for equality of outcomes. Larry Summers violated this when he made his unegalitarian, but scientifically correct, observations about male and female IQs. Mr. Kirby similarly violated this when he confronted the disorderly youths, and insisted on treating them not as blank slates who could not be blamed for their actions but as distinct human beings who had to answer for their deeds.

As you may recall, Professor Summers had to pay with his dignity to avoid having to pay with his job. Mr. Kirby had to pay with:

an order of 240 hours community service, £400 in court costs and he was forced to pay the victim £1,000 compensation.

The train conductor, who refused to hear Mr. Kirby’s plea for assistance and hence acted like a good modern liberal remains in position. One of the thugs will profit to the tune of £1000.

The greatest irony of all must be that the feminist doctrine from which this flows is now harming women. Not if they are feminist university professors , perhaps. Nor if they are corporate liberagos, determined to push themselves into corporate positions for which they are deemed unsuitable by the management. But the average, unassuming lady, especially if she happens to live in one of the more socialist parts of the country, will soon find herself living in something that resembles an actual gulag - and not even a comfortable one.

I was in a situation not too long ago where a woman was being attacked by a guy and I jumped in to help her. He backed off and called all his mates, and within 10 minutes I had half a dozen guys attacking me.

I walked away with only minor bruising to my face and stomach, but atleast the woman had a chance to run off to safety.
