Drew Fraser stands firm against Human Rights Commission

Despite being ordered by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission to apologise for his “racist” comments claiming a link between African migration and crime, Professor Andrew Fraser from Macquarie University has refused to yield to the Stalinist thought police. I simply cannot believe that Fraser’s public opinions have been declared illegal by a statutory commission in Australia. The parallels with the Soviet Union are all too ominous.

No apology for linking Africans to crime

ACADEMIC Andrew Fraser will defy the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission by not apologising to the Sudanese community for his study linking African refugees to high crime rates.

In a landmark ruling that raises fresh questions about the limits to which academics can engage in public debate, HREOC chairman John von Doussa has found Professor Fraser’s comments were unlawful because they amounted to a “sweeping generalisation” that was not backed by research.

Professor Fraser was suspended last year from teaching at Sydney’s Macquarie University over his comments about Sudanese refugees in Australia.

Sudanese Darfurian Union secretary Safi Hareer complained to the human rights commission that Professor Fraser breached the Racial Discrimination Act in a letter published in the Parramatta Sun newspaper.

Mr Hareer’s lawyer, George Newhouse, said he would discuss with his client the prospect of pursuing the matter in the Federal Court.

“This is not a question of freedom of speech,” Mr Newhouse said. “This is about how far you can go in spewing your bile on other people because of the colour of their skin.”

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president David Knoll, who helped Mr Hareer prepare his complaint, hailed the HREOC decision as an important milestone.

“I have no difficulty with legitimate academic discourse but there is no such thing as freedom of hatred,” Mr Knoll said.

Somebody should remind Jewish Board of Deputies president David Knoll that hatred is an emotion. Are we going to criminalise emotions now?

When do we counter-attack using the same tools? When do posters here even mention the efficacy of this technique?

This is rich. While in his country Arab militias are racially targeting Blacks (with the support of the government, btw) this man has the nerv to complain about an article unfriendly towards Blacks which appeared in a country thousand of miles away.

Ben,

In England, this organisation has been set up to, in their own words:-

help individuals who have fallen victim to the tyranny of this twisted concept of government. We are independent of any political party and will step in to defend individuals.

Don Miller is right about using the same tools as the other side. But it can’t be done without a rights-based infrastucture, and it can’t be done with serious financial backing.

I await the day when such organisations as Civil Liberty will be the natural benefiary of wealthy members of our own people. We are not there today. But ideas come before deeds, and it the self-appointed but glad task of people like you and me to argue the case.

I still think you should be blogging to that end, by the way.

Those last lines really set my hatred free.

The harder they try to supress it, the more it grows.

Thanks to people such as Mr. Knoll, my hatred is ever more pure, focused, and intense.

All the ambient hatred engendered in Western nations by Knoll and his kin will eventually find a target…
