The most recent common ancestor for all U5 individuals broke off from the rest of the group and headed north into Scandinavia. Even though U5 is descended from an ancestor in haplogroup U, it is also ancient, estimated to be around 30,000 years old.

U5 is quite restricted in its variation to Scandinavia, and particularly to Finland. This is likely the result of the significant geographical, linguistic, and cultural isolation of the Finnish populations, which would have restricted geographic distribution of this subgroup and kept it fairly isolated genetically. The Saami, reindeer hunters who follow the herds from Siberia to Scandinavia each season, have the U5 lineage at a very high frequency of around 50 percent, indicating that it may have been introduced during their movements into these northern territories.

The U5 lineage is found outside of Scandinavia, though at much lower frequencies and at lower genetic diversity.

Today, this line is present most often in Finland (15 percent) and Latvia (12 percent). It is between 6 and 9 percent of maternal lineages in Luxembourg, Northern Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia.

Note: 20 percent “South West Asian” is close the same percentage as all other European natives.

The explanation that National Geographic gave was that:

Southwest Asian: This component is found at highest frequencies in India and neighboring populations, including Tajikistan and Iran in our reference dataset. It is also found at lower frequencies in Europe and North Africa. As with the Mediterranean component, it was likely spread during the Neolithic expansion, perhaps from the eastern part of the Fertile Crescent. Individuals with heavy European influence in their ancestry will show traces of this because all Europeans have mixed with people from S/W Asia over tens of thousands of years.

Therefore, as a European advocate, the take-away for me is pretty good.

I don’t merely have 36 percent Northern European hunter-gatherer heritage, but it is of the oldest lineage and first to arrive in Europe. Moreover, it is a lineage that mutated distinctly and specifically in Northern Europe.

U5b occurs on the “heat map” overwhelmingly in northern Finland/Sweden.*

However, unlike the Finns, I have no northeast Asian (whereas I might have expected a little).

Though I am still slightly more Mediterranean than Northern European, it isn’t much more, at 7 percent more. And the really good news is that I have NO Sub Saharan African - and there IS such a category as Sub Saharan African that one can have according to these tests - as one can see from the Puerto Ricans and Mexicans.

While there are a lot of positive qualities associated with the north-European hunter-gatherers, such as modesty, conscientiousness and practicality, all races and sub-races have strengths and weaknesses.

Hunter gatherers tends to be more ethnically and politically naive than southern Europeans, and are easily manipulated by high IQ non-Europeans such as Jews. They also seem to be more vulnerable to becoming religious and ideological obsessives, who can lurch from hyper-moralistic puritanism to fanatical anti-racism and cultural relativism. Relatively high levels of neuroticism are also an issue, particularly in countries like the US, where they live in a more extroverted cultural environment which doesn’t suit their temperament.

Presently, the most conservative and independently minded Europeans tend to those with a mix of hunter-gatherer and Alpine/Latin traits, such as the Swiss and northern Italians. Perhaps this is because they have the ethnocentric instincts of southern Europeans, yet still have a lot of the conscientiousness and discipline of northern Europeans.

Those assessments coincide with my experience. Accurate, I can agree.

And the Swiss do seem to have their act together pretty well.
