Millions of children take ritalin. Rats given comparable doses as juveniles are different as adults: they are more susceptible to “depression.” Actually, you cannot tell if a rat feels depressed. These rats were more likely to give up swimming in a “hopeless situation”—supposedly an animal model for human depression.
To be fair, I will mention that the sustained release 20-mg tablet of Ritalin is a wonderful, wonderful hangover cure—at least, it was in the 1980’s.

I think ADHD is a hoax, there is no verifiable test one can take for it. The list of symptoms for which people are given drugs to “treat” it are so vague and broad as to be meaningless.

I do think ADHD describes a very real problem though, most women are being forced into roles they are not biologically suited for. The drugs numb women to this reality. Instead of being given drugs women ought to be told to find a good man, stay at home and have children. This is what women are designed for.

Denial only results in the long term destruction of the group that takes that drug, mostly White women and incidently White men too.

They tried to feed me Ritalin as a child.  Stuff wired me up like nobody’s business.  My mom put a stop to it in about a week.

Saw on the news the other day, something like 45% of the American population is on at least one prescription med.

Have you seen a film named “THX1138,” by George Lucas? A very early film of his in which Robert Duval stars as THX1138, and set is the future.

In this film people perform tedious and meaningless work all day - until they are exhausted. Everyone is medicated, and refusing to take drugs is a crime. Cameras are everywhere (especially in homes), it as Huxlyian world.

Don’t know.

But back in the old days, when local television existed, especially on UHF, (anyone remember those days?), the local station would play that film at midnight a few times a year.

As a young boy I was mesmerized by the movie.

No, never seen Zardoz either.

I’m not nearly the movie hound some are.  The weirdest/coolest I’ve seen is Brazil I guess (a friend is an AC man who looks more like DeNiro than not ).

Ever seen the DeLaurentis version of Flash Gordon?  I love that movie.

Fish oil and other omega-3 oil fats make a good substitute for ritalin.
ADHD could have as its cause a chemical imbalance in the brain.  Adding omega-3 fats to the diet appears to help some kids.

I have to agree with Geoff’s retro social views for once, but not because of the women, because of the kids.  Having one myself, it’s very clear that taking trouble over education and upbringing is repaid many-fold, so I have to believe that many “problem” children in middle class homes are simply the sad result of 2 career families.

Not, in some circumstances, that it shouldn’t be the man who stayed home. With longer lifespans the career woman’s problem could be solved by her marrying a 60 year old man at 30, then letting him retire from full time work and look after the kids (which he will generally be able to do through college age) while she has the career. However, obviously the easiest de-2-careering method is the other way round.

BTW,

Isn’t ADHD officially not recognized by the medical/psychiatric establishment in Britain.

Haven’t I read that Ritalin and similar drugs are not prescribed there? Do you know?

THX1138 was, I heard, a student film for George Lucas when he was at USC.

A car-racing buff in his teens, the film’s title is said to be taken from the license plate, literally THX1138, of Lucas’ hotrod of the time.

Ritalin is prescribed in UK, but not too widely. My eldest son was prescribed it for a short while when he was 14, as a diagnostic tool. A blood test to rule out Fragile X revealed he had a mosaic form of XYY Syndrome, which explained his difficulties at school. Now he is 22 and is qualified as a vehicle re-sprayer. He has started to learn airbrushing for customising cars and motorbikes.

His journey has been eventful, but he has stuck at it and has been in full employment for four years. As a result of this experience I would suggest that physicians should order similar tests when trying to sort out difficult kids. If we had known earlier, then the lad would have had a better time at school.

Britain seems to be a much saner society in regards to dispensing this drug.

Pericles, that’s a nice story.  As Geoff suspected, partly because the incentives are different under the National Health system, they don’t hand out these dangerous drugs like popcorn over there. Even here though it’s perfectly possible to find a good doctor if you search hard and know what you’re looking for.

In my case, all the doctors available on my (stingy) UPI health plan were immigrants, but after a couple of unpleasant experiments with Hispanics and Indians I found a truly excellent lady graduate of the University of Shanghai! (Yes, Geoff, I know but trust me, in suburban Va. unless you pay top dollar which my plan wouldn’t cover, your doctor will inevitably be an immigfrant.)

Our OBGYN and pediatrician are both Jews, how about that!

I haven’t been to a doctor in 20 years, maybe more. I have had a few visits to the emergency room, in these cases my doctors were Gentiles.

Let me say this… I would never EVER let a Mestizo or Black diagnose and treat me for anything, other than perhaps a minor cut or abrasion. Seeing an Oriental doctor is not that big a deal for me, though I always prefer a Gentile.
