Ireland Worshipping at the Holocaust Shrine

The Irish Independent newspaper published a report on a speech delivered at a new Holocaust exhibition in Dublin on January 23, 2012 by the Justice Minister Alan Shatter. (State ‘did nothing for Jews in WWII’, By Breda Heffernan, The Irish Independent, Tuesday January 24 2012)

Mr. Shatter accused Ireland of turning its back on the suffering of the Jews during World War Two. He proclaimed that the Irish State had lost its “moral compass” during and after the war. He said, “In the period following Hitler coming to power and preceding the Second World War, the doors of this state were kept firmly closed to German Jewish families trying to escape from persecution and death.”

Shatter told his audience that records unearthed by the Minister from the Department of Foreign Affairs while he was researching the period many years ago show that the then Irish Ambassador to Germany, Charles Bewley, recommended the Government refuse visa requests from Jews to protect Ireland from “contamination”.

Shatter was referring to Charles Bewley.

Bewley was the ‘Irish Minister Plenipotentiary and Envoy Extraordinary’ in Berlin from 1933 to 1939. His reports to Dublin during the 1930s give “the impression that German Jews were not threatened; that they were involved in pornography, abortion and “the international white slave traffic”… He explained the Nuremberg Laws ‘As the Chancellor pointed out, it amounts to the making of the Jews into a national minority; and as they themselves claim to be a separate race, they should have nothing to complain of.’ He report[ed] that he had no knowledge of any ‘deliberate cruelty on the part of the [German] Government ... towards the Jews’. He criticized Irish refugee policy as ‘inordinately liberal, and facilitating the entry of the ‘wrong class’ of people’ ). The Irish legation in Berlin consisted of two people, Bewley and a German secretary called Frau Kamberg.…Fewer than a hundred Jews obtained Irish visas between 1933 and 1939.” [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bewley]

Mr Shatter said the failure to act proactively to rescue Jews has consequences today for how Ireland should treat Israel.

“We should not be in denial nor should we ignore that the conduct of our State, at that time, in the eyes of some, delimits Ireland’s moral authority and credibility when today we seek to lecture later generations of those whose families survived the Holocaust on the conduct of their affairs in Israel,” he added.

“Mr Shatter was opening ‘The Shoah in Europe’ exhibition at the Department of Justice on St Stephen’s Green which was also attended by two Holocaust survivors—Suzi Diamond and Tomas Reichental, who were imprisoned in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as children.”

“Ms Diamond was two-years-old while in the camp and was one of the first Jews given permission to reside in Ireland after the war.”

Now, as all properly indoctrinated people know, when Jews arrived in the camps the Germans killed all of the old people and all the very young children and the mothers with very young children.

It is a miracle that two Jewish children who were in the camps are alive this week in Dublin. Suzi Diamond must have been an extremely tall two- year- old.

It must be a random coincidence that the Irish Minister of Justice who condemned Ireland in such strong terms was born in Dublin to a Jewish family. He is also the only Jewish member of Dáil Éireann.

I wonder if Mr Shatter’s belief in collective responsibility extending over generations applies to Jews also?

The thing is, I never had any particular interest in WW2 or the holocaust growing up. Even just ten years ago both subjects were entirely peripheral to my political views and the way I saw the world. But then I felt a step-change in the way the British and our culture were treated in this country, which caused me to be more outspoken in our defence. That is when you start noticing how much the Nazis and the Jews are thrown into your face every time British rights and identity are asserted. When you are called a ‘Nazi’ for caring about your own people, and when you see that the holocaust and WW2 is repeatedly used as a weapon against our survival, one is forced to learn about these things and then one begins to notice the same arguments being advanced by the same people for the same dubious ends.

Believe me, in my ideal Britain I would never have to think about the Jewish people or hear their highly attuned sense of victimhood and guilt-mongering ever again. But I do not live in such a Britain, and so if I am to defend myself and argue my corner then I shall continue to avail myself of the facts and to question their motives—just as they question ours.

If a man who had repeatedly been beaten up started going to his local boxing club would you say that he was ‘obsessed with violence’? Actually, you probably would, because you are a bit of a prick.
