How important is your racial identity to you? Researchers long thought it wasn’t that crucial to whites. But a groundbreaking new study on whiteness and race relations by University of Minnesota sociologists shows that whites in the U.S. are far more conscious of being white—and the privileges it brings—than was believed.

The survey is packed with fascinating findings, some surprising (a stunning proportion of whites—77%—say their race has a distinct culture that should be preserved)

Whites are more likely to say prejudice and discrimination put blacks at a disadvantage than to say those factors contribute to white advantage.

Blacks do see more racism in society than whites but, contrary to stereotype, seem disinclined to blame the system for their disadvantage. In fact, they are more likely to attribute it to individual causes like a lack of hard work—77% did so, compared with 62% of whites.

“We think of U.S. minorities as less engaged in American individualism,” Hartmann says, “but they are maybe more so.”

In America, which ethnic group is most ethnocentric? The General Social Survey asked respondents if they think about social and political issues as Americans or as members of an ethnic group. The obvious choice is blacks, right? Well yeah, there’s no news there. Listed below are the percent who answered ethnic group:

2. Mexicans 21.9
3. Jews 15.8
4. Italians 12.0
5. American Indians 7.8
6. Irish 5.1
7. Scots 4.8

This is what passes for journalism - an article about a study does not name it.

I advise against holding your breath waiting for Dr. Hartmann to produce a similar study laced with terms like “Jewish privilege” (the relevant Jewish privilege here is immunity from queries as to why Jews get to scribble and yak about “white privilege” and otherwise go about defining whiteness while the converse would get us thrown in the intellectual gulag).

What whites think about their own race is the focus of a first-of-its-kind national survey by researchers in the University of Minnesota’s department of sociology. From a telephone survey of more than 2,000 households nationwide, results show that there is more recognition among white people of their own racial identity and the social privileges that come with it than was previously thought.

The assumption behind prior scholarship and diversity training initiatives was that whites overlooked their own race.

“It’s sort of like having an accent,” said the study’s co-author, University of Minnesota associate professor Doug Hartmann. “For some white Americans, racial identity is so fixed, so taken for granted, that ‘race’ becomes something other people have.”

In fact, the researchers found that a majority of whites (74 percent) felt that their own racial identity was important to them, and that a similar majority were able to see prejudice and discrimination as important in explaining white advantage. At the same time, minorities are more likely to see their racial identities as important and to see structural reasons for racial disparities.

The research also suggests that awareness of white identity and awareness of white privilege are not the same. “The fact of the matter is that people claim white identity for defensive as well as progressive reasons,” said survey co-author Paul Croll, University of Minnesota graduate student.

Age and income have little impact on a white person’s awareness of their racial identity, the study found. But Southerners and social conservatives place more emphasis on their racial identity than other white Americans, while those with more education place less. Republican and male respondents most strongly resist claims that discrimination in legal and financial systems can explain white advantage. Additionally, respondents—regardless of their racial identity—believed strongly in the importance of individual effort, hard work and family upbringing in achieving success.

The study, available upon request, was part of the American Mosaic Project, a three-year project funded by the Minneapolis-based David Edelstein Family Foundation that looks at race, religion and cultural diversity in the contemporary United States.

Antisemitism is not driven by religious intolerance, but by competition. It’s not a Jewish person’s belief that threatens others; it’s his or her success. For example, 12 percent of the respondents thought Jewish people held too much power, but when researchers looked only at participants living in areas of high unemployment, that number went up to 17 percent.

In general, people value racial or cultural diversity (more than 70 percent of the participants), but only 30 percent actually have diversity, or seek out diverse relationships, in their lives.

Almost 50 percent of white conservative Christians would disapprove if their child wanted to marry an African American, while only 22 percent of other Americans would disapprove.

White conservative Christians are also less tolerant of other racial and religious minorities. More white conservative Christians than other Americans would disapprove of their child marrying a Hispanic (34 percent vs. 14 percent), an Asian American (34 percent vs. 14 percent), or a Jewish American (18 percent vs. 10 percent).

Yeah, since the Time piece doesn’t name the study, link to it, or provide any info whatsoever about acquiring it, I think it’s safe to say that the article itself is the only point of the article.

Thus, we get these points:

White people are best depicted in black and white, not color, photos.

Whites in the U.S. are far more conscious of being white—and the privileges it brings—than was believed.

The fact that 77% say their race has a distinct culture that should be preserved is “stunning.”

The beliefs of whites hinder racial reconciliation.

Whites are actually more racially aware (and, consequently, more racist and collectivist) than non-whites.

Whites are full of shit, racially speaking.

If one were religious eg christian, why is the special status of the Chosen people never questioned? Their special status(if I read the bible correctly) is dependant on their fullfilment of certain obligations, it is not freely given, it must be earned. I can also point to many passges in the Torah in which abuse of foreigners or even slaves is forbiden. The old passage that states don’t wait until tomorrow to pay your employee for he might need the money to sleep well tonite(more or less) is equally binding in todays world. See: non-deliverance of money to the Palestinian authority for months now, darn right criminal. This are in some cases humanitarian help and in others taxes dully collected and owed to the Palestinian state. With the kidnapping of elected officials thrown in, how is this living in harmony with your neighbors? Also, why don’t more “christians” stateside also question Isreal immigration policy? If we support them so much why can’t christian neighborhoods sprang up in Israel? Most they be in constant fear of being spat upon once they live there? Disregard last question, it wont happen.

We have a serious White Problem in this country, and the David Edelstein Foundation is hard at work funding dedicated researchers who will help us overcome it.

Accordingly the team assembled for the American Mosaic Project are all experts, with many publications to their names, in the burgeoning fields of whiteness studies and critical race theory. The CV of one of the Project’s leaders is here:

The David Edelstein Foundation will soon, I’m sure, tackle the vexed problem of dangerously high levels of ethnocentrism among American and Israeli Jews.

Hartmann said the David Edelstein Family Foundation of Minneapolis sponsored the project, which will be completed next year. He said three members of the Edelstein family are University alumni. Their lives as Jews in the 1920s included discrimination and intolerance, an experience Hartmann said prompted this project.

Introduction to the Project

We hear a great deal about the diversity of American society - ethnic, racial, and religious. Sometimes, our diversity has caused commentators, and leaders, to fear that we are headed toward a divisive “culture war.”

At other times, we have celebrated our diversity and understood it as being at the heart of our vitality as a nation.

Sponsored by the David Edelstein Family Foundation, our three-year project has explored these issues, with particular focus on race and religion as key forms of difference that shape American life and experience. Our nationally representative telephone survey measured attitudes about diversity and about racial and religious identification and discrimination more specifically. In in-depth interviews and fieldwork across the country, we further explored the various contexts in which Americans experience diversity, focusing in particular on religious interfaith organizations, neighborhoods, and festivals.

The American Mosaic Project is designed to contribute to our understanding of what brings Americans together, what divides us, and the implications of our diversity for our political and civic life. We are most concerned with how Americans themselves understand the nature and consequences of diversity for their own lives and for our society as a whole. How do Americans understand ethnic, religious, and racial diversity? How do Americans respond to calls for greater recognition of diverse groups and lifestyles? How do our ethnic, racial, and religious identities shape the way we understand the obligations of citizenship and our vision of “the good society?”

Or if anyone needed more proof that Google is run by leftist morons. I’ve long since stopped using their search engine. Yahoo! gets the job done just as well and has the added benefit that their results are not brought to you by the ADL.

What to study is a group’s access to education. Only education can change people permanently. Education is a marker of how a group will succeed or do in an organized society. Education is used to unionize, organize, and structure a society. How do groups do?

Jews send over 80% of their children to college and 68% get college degrees. Whites only graduate 29% of their children from college. This gives Jews exaggerated power and money in an education segregation society such as Great Britain America, or Israel.

For Blacks, Mexicans, Native Americans, other minorities, the education levels are appalling. It’s all about education and education segregation.

Further, education is boring and expensive. K-12 education is $120,000. A college education is another $120,000, usually subsidized in some way. A graduate degree is another $120,000. A medical doctor degree costs $360,000 or more. That’s class separation, not educational training.

That same $360,000, at a traditional 7% stock return, from age 27 to 67, would yield $5,872,108.40. A college education of $240,000 would yield $3,914,738.90 in forty years. That is less than these people earn in their lifetime. Education has a financial negative return unless someone else pays like a relative or a tax payer. Education has become too expensive as a barrier to employment to promote Jews and Whites in society.

There must be another answer to success besides over priced educations. The education is fine. The price is wrong, to use education segregation to keep poor people out of schools and out of society.

We have simply replaced race segregation with education segregation that mainly benefits white women and Jews, since white males are excluded by race and gender bias quotas. The winners are Jews and white women. The losers are everyone else other than a few token success stories like Colin Powell or Congolezza Rice, if you measure success only in dollars. Others believe Powell and Rice were dupes in invading Iraq to protect Israel from Middle East aggression. That will remain to be seen.

Education is too expensive and must come down in price. The answer is the internet, after it gets better organized.
