Just before the Golden Dawn: Two American White Nationalists on holiday in Greece - Part 1

by Karl LaForce

My intrepid traveling companion and I touched down at Eleftherios Venizelos airport in Athens on the day before the Independence Day holiday, which is March 25th of every year. It was a bright warm day, typical of the entire week we were there, but change is in the air, like a cleansing storm on the horizon that will bring a new day.

We took a 35 Euro taxi ride to our hotel just a few blocks from the Acropolis. After a brief rest we were met by our contact with ΧΡΥΣΗ ΑΥΓΗ (known in English as Golden Dawn, hereafter GD for short).  George, which was his name, took us straight to the GD headquarters in Athens.

At this location GD occupies two floors of a mixed residential and commercial building. It is one of many around the country. Some of GD’s Women’s Front members, about six in all, were busily cleaning the offices in anticipation of the weekly Saturday meeting. I later learned that some of the women cleaning had college degrees and were employed in professional positions, and that they demanded that the GD Women’s Front be responsible for the work of cleaning the offices.

The 2nd floor has a type of coffee bar/hang-out lounge, so we got ourselves two iced Greek style frappes and sat down to speak in greater detail with George. He told us of the protests in January 2012 in Athens in which as many as 20,000 Athenians had marched in opposition to the government monetary and immigration policy. He told us that Greece currently consisted of 10 million Greeks and 3 million immigrants. He told us of poverty levels that had not been seen since WWII. Yet, as he spoke, I detected an underlining optimism.  He felt that the enemies of Greece and Hellenism had pushed too far, and that Greece was on the verge of an epic change.

“The public is ready to embrace nationalism by electing GD parliament candidates”, he told us.  GD will have 118 candidates on the ballot in May. “The immigrants, the crime, the Euro, the never-ending austerity measures, the inability of the current government to protect the treasures of Greek antiquities either from immigrant vandals [referring to the February 2012 looting of the museum treasures in ancient Olympia] or from German banks ... all have played a part”.

As the time for the regular Saturday meeting neared, the number of people swelled to over a hundred. The energy was palpable, even over-flowing. Because of very real safety threats the security was heavy; in 2010 the GD Athens offices were bombed and, in a separate incident, there was also an attack against the Chairman at his home.

We met an organization lawyer, the official spokesman, and several of the brothers who were running for parliament.  The chairman arrived about an hour before the meeting, preceded by bodyguards.  One of them announced his arrival with a command that everyone stand.  Nikolaos G. Michaloliakos entered the room to a volley of Roman salutes; it was a thrilling moment!  Though he had never met my traveling companion or me, he walked straight up to us and offered us a warm welcome.  He said that after he had attended some pressing business we would be invited into his office for an informal chat.  After a few minutes, as promised, his bodyguards came for us.  I offered to leave my large folding pocket knife with them, but they allowed me to carry it in.  They understood that I had not come to harm their chairman, and they understood that their chairman was well protected by several big guys stationed inside the office.

After the few minutes in the Chairman’s office the regular meeting was ready to start. The party official spokesman gave a quick talk, and introduced the other speakers.  One of the speakers was a historian, dressed in 1821 period military garb.  He gave a speech on one of the fiercest battles during the war for independence from the Ottoman Empire.

At the end of the meeting a GD party official announced that contrary to previous plans, GD would not participate in any Independence Day parades the following day, due to the expectation of excessive police misconduct toward members.  The government had brought about 5000 riot policemen from around the country to guard the politicians, and there were even sharp shooters positioned on top of government buildings, for fear of insurrection.  This was somewhat of a disappointment for my traveling companion and I, as we had chosen our travel dates to coincide with the now canceled parade, however we were confident that the GD leadership had good reason to cancel the parade.

After the meeting there was a gathering at a local bar owned by a GD member. We were impressed by the closeness and camaraderie.  We saw tables at the bar where young love was at bloom, and we saw tables where young lions were plotting their next victories.  We would have stayed longer, but the travel weariness and jet lag dictated otherwise.  For a first day in a country new to me, the number and quality of new experiences had been overwhelming!  The good fortune of meeting Nationalist brothers and sisters, combined with being in the presence of the most impressive of all the ancient monuments built by our race - the majestic Acropolis – and to be walking the streets that had been walked by so many great men, had all made for something of a life changing experience.  It was one that would be deepened and expanded in the following days.

Refreshing news for a change! It sounds like in White countries, “representative democracy” is anything but, otherwise the people would not have to deal with crap like 23%+ of our capital cities being mud.

I don’t understand the German bank tie-in, though I heard about it. Can anyone explain this?

“I don’t understand the German bank tie-in, though I heard about it. Can anyone explain this?”

One of the financial plans involved the banks taking over the Acropolis and other Greek assets. I was generalizing when I said German banks, I was not picking on Germany.

The Greek situation bothers me. On the one hand, it is outrageous not only that the Greek people themselves are suffering under an EU-mandated immigration invasion/colonization, but that unguarded Greece is essentially the portal through which so many illegal muds gain entry into other European countries.

On the other hand, the Greek economic blight is overwhelmingly due to irresponsible Greek economic policies, in which a numerical majority of the population had a hand. In essence, after adoption of the euro, their government went on a borrowing and spending spree, utilizing Germany’s good credit rating to get away with it (and with very little objection from the Greek people themselves, who collectively opted not to oppose this grotesque national irresponsibility). I am no expert of the Greek political economy, but I have read a number of newspaper and periodical articles by some who are. The stats on the number of Greeks “working” for the government, on retirement ages (can any European ever allege that Americans are lazy? it is shocking how much longer and harder we work compared to the Continent), on pension benefits, etc, are simply appalling to anyone with sound fiscal sense.

Greeks collectively were living way beyond their means, and now are whining about having to pay the tab. Even as of today, hardly any Greek civil servants have been fired, and there have been almost no basic capitalist economic reforms. All that has happened is that many of us around the world with financial investments in companies which themselves had invested in Greek sovereign debt have lost epic amounts of money (myself included).

If nationalists want credibility (as well to do some actual good), they need to be on the side of correct and responsible economics.

“Experts say the group [GD] is thriving where the Greek state seems absent, the most virulent sign of how the economic collapse has empowered fringe groups while eroding the political mainstream, a situation that some Greek news outlets have begun comparing to Weimar Germany.

Greek society at this point is a laboratory of extreme-right-wing evolution,” said Nicos Demertzis, a political scientist at the University of Athens. “We are going through an unprecedented financial crisis; we are a fragmented society without strong civil associations” and with “generalized corruption in all the administration levels.

You say that an “extreme centre” is ruling most countries today? Why do you call it the “extreme centre”?

Because when you have a Centre which encompasses Centre Left, Centre Right and the traditional Centre parties, and this Centre then wages war, defends the occupation of countries, wages war on its own people at home through austerity measures then it is the home for extremism in my opinion. That is why I label it the Extreme Centre. This is the pattern in most parts of Europe. It does not matter who wins, the Centre rules. And it is creating a huge void in democratic accountability. At the level of civil liberties, you have had the case of a young woman who described a dream to a friend on email in which she saw some terrorists carrying out some action. She was arrested and charged for having a dream.

Very Orwellian, don’t you think?

Completely Orwellian. They can now tap into your dreams. Had she not written that mail, she would have been safe. And in the United States, the President for the first time in a normal situation – not in times of war – has the power to order the killing of a US citizen without any recourse to law. If this is the direction in which these countries are going then they have no right to teach lessons to any other parts of the world. They should put their own house in order. Then you have the so called anti-terror laws which allow you to pick up people just on suspicion etc. etc. – it’s a messy situation. If at the same time you do not provide any political and social alternatives to the electorate, democracy itself becomes meaningless. More and more people stop voting unless new alternatives emerge.

Can anyone really be in doubt that the latest mutation of liberalism - neo-liberalism - properly understood as a socio-economic and cultural system, enjoys ‘full spectrum dominance’ - at least for now?

“With Wall Street’s help, Greece engaged in a decade-long effort to skirt European debt limits. One deal created by Goldman Sachs helped obscure billions in debt from the budget overseers in Brussels.

Even as the crisis was nearing the flashpoint, banks were searching for ways to help Greece forestall the day of reckoning. In early November — three months before Athens became the epicenter of global financial anxiety — a team from Goldman Sachs arrived in the ancient city with a very modern proposition for a government struggling to pay its bills, according to two people who were briefed on the meeting.

The bankers, led by Goldman’s president, Gary D. Cohn, held out a financing instrument that would have pushed debt from Greece’s health care system far into the future, much as when strapped homeowners take out second mortgages to pay off their credit cards.

It had worked before. In 2001, just after Greece was admitted to Europe’s monetary union, Goldman helped the government quietly borrow billions, people familiar with the transaction said. That deal, hidden from public view because it was treated as a currency trade rather than a loan, helped Athens to meet Europe’s deficit rules while continuing to spend beyond its means.

Athens did not pursue the latest Goldman proposal, but with Greece groaning under the weight of its debts and with its richer neighbors vowing to come to its aid, the deals over the last decade are raising questions about Wall Street’s role in the world’s latest financial drama.

As in the American subprime crisis and the implosion of the American International Group, financial derivatives played a role in the run-up of Greek debt. Instruments developed by Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase and a wide range of other banks enabled politicians to mask additional borrowing in Greece, Italy and possibly elsewhere.

In dozens of deals across the Continent, banks provided cash upfront in return for government payments in the future, with those liabilities then left off the books. Greece, for example, traded away the rights to airport fees and lottery proceeds in years to come.”

Goldman Sachs is indeed a criminal organization, but not because it practices capitalism, but rather, crony socialism of the worst variety (note GS were huge contributors to Obama in 2008, despite the fact that it was the criminal Bush regime which nationalized AIG in order to pay off GS’s CDSs at full value, no haircut!).

@Leon

Well I’m still thinking, making notes, reading about all sorts of issues and ideas (when time allows) but one does wonder if MR is the best place to express them? After all, on inviting ‘Classic Sparkle’ to read some of my OPs/front page items, all I got back was basically the response “no you’re a faggot”. What can a moderately civil person do with such an individual?

GW does have a commitment to free speech but as in so many other areas the bad tends to drive out the good. It seems much (not all obviously) of the audience for MR are either the less well-educated, culturally impoverished and/or emotionally or psychologically abnormal. Or if not they don’t provide evidence to the contrary.

I do wonder why some people actually have front-page posting privileges given the quality of what they post. Isn’t this site aiming to be an original meta-political site going beyond the limited clichés and the banalities readily available elsewhere?

Thoughtful and erudite contributions should be the aim. You know I wouldn’t even mind serious discussion of the role of religion in society and culture - I’m presently reading a book (very slowly I admit) on Dostoevsky and religion - but perhaps such discussions could be pitched as a level moderately above young Earth creationism and the like. And no-one wants to hear sub C.S. Lewis arguments for believe in the divine again, for what seems about the 4th billionth time.

I’ll try to comment on protecting people from bad decisions and ideas of freedom later if I have the energy.

BTW given the events of a certain trial in Norway does anyone in the MR readership still thinks a notorious individual “does not exist”? That such an idea could be asserted on several occasions at MR - within front-page items as I recall - does not reflect well on the site.

The Greek people had no blame in the unfolding disaster. The rotten corrupt political class stuffed with crypto jews like simitis to Papandreu and turksporos are the main culprits, together with the equally rotten bureacratic kleptocracy of the EU. Briber=EU and bribed=Greek political establishment= demise of white nation state.

@Lister

Not that anyone has asked me for my opinion, but if I were directing the revivication of MR, I would edit with a much heavier hand - deleting comments that are personally (as against intellectually, which is good) antagonistic, as well as those which are either stubbornly anti-factual, or arrogantly stupid (there is nothing wrong with a person who genuinely wishes to expand his mental horizons asking questions). I might also even delete those comments too poorly expressed.

I would also limit the type of posts that would be allowed. There is no need to maximize ‘turnover’. Quality is far more important than quantity. A problem with quantity is that quality then gets lost, as most visitors undoubtedly focus on what is most recent. Who cares if excellent posts like Dan Dare’s recent work on UK immigration policy history attract comments which veer off into US or Australian policy history? Dan’s work could be a springboard for all sorts of interesting discussions, and provided all comments are sincere and as reasonably well written as their authors can make them, it would be nice to have them. But at least Dan’s OP wouldn’t get lost in a crowd of crap.

My goal would be to attract ‘la creme’ of the nationalist world to a site for sharing and debating serious ideas and strategies. Deleting a comment would not mean that the commenter was being forever banned from MR, of course. But over time, people would have to clean up their acts, with those refusing to do so eventually growing frustrated from repeated deletions and likely exiting.

There is nothing malign about sincere disagreement, and indeed, the lucid expression of such can be useful for non-participating readers. But some kind of impossible-to-define boundaries need to be editorially established. Basically, an intelligent editor knows when disagreements are being validly explored in a spirit of real inquiry, and when persons are merely being disruptive. The editor’s task is to impose discipline for the ultimate betterment of the site. What we have at MR all too often is not freedom, but plain anarchy.

Once MR has been made into a serious venue again, then GW (and others) should spread the word of the change across the nationalist ‘net in an attempt to encourage a wider variety of the ‘better sorts’ to participate here. Build it - and maintain it - and they will come.

It is amusing to see how the MR pendulum swings, from Richards’s authoritarianism to Sparkle’s obviously solipsistic anarchism. But neither approach best advances the ostensible metapolitical project.

enders,

And the Greek polit. estab. then ‘bribed’ the voters with cushy jobs and inflated pension promises that the Greek economy could never organically support. The average Greek is not innocent. Only the minority of Greeks who never wanted the EU/euro and/or who work in the private sector have any moral right to complain or riot.

In 1989, the CEOs of the seven largest banks in the US earned an average of $2.8 million, almost a hundred times the annual income of the average US household. In the same year, the CEOs of the largest four UK banks earned £453,000, fifty times average UK household income. These are striking inequalities. Yet by 2007, at the height of the financial sector boom, CEO pay at the largest US banks had risen nearly tenfold to $26 million, more than five hundred times US household income, while among the UK’s largest banks it had risen by an almost identical factor to reach £4.3 million, 230 times UK household income in that year.

How do we make sense of these salary increases? Easily, in fact. During the go-go years, bank profits reached spectacular highs. Bank shareholders remunerated managers for delivering these riches; CEO pay grew almost exactly in line with shareholder returns. Reality then intervened. The heart-stopping global recession of the last few years was largely induced by financial sector excess. The long-term costs of the crisis are likely comfortably to exceed a year’s global income.

The continuing backlash against banking, as evidenced in popular protests on Wall Street and in the City of London, is a response not just to the fact that the world is poorer, as pre-crisis riches have turned to rags, but to the way these riches were privatised, while the rags are being socialised. This disparity is nothing new. Neither, in the main, is it anyone’s fault. For the most part the financial crisis was not the result of individual wickedness or folly. It is not a story of pantomime villains and village idiots. Instead the crisis reflected a failure of the entire system of financial sector governance.

It’s very much a systemic issue. Socialism for the elite - Goldman Sachs et al., - austerity for us plebs.

I agree with Enders. The political establishment is sick and rotten.

Leon Haller;  “the Greek politicians bribed the voters”.  Quite true, just like they do in the rest of the continent.  However , does the Greek voter understands that he is getting a bribe to vote x y or z ???

The voter hears the a politician’s alluring offer, he likes it, he votes it. The general voting public does not have the capacity ,nor the time to think and evaluate political propositions.  As a matter of fact the politicians do not bribe the voters, they lie and cheat to them. Sure they brandish hyperbolic slogans, lavish favors, offer jobs,  but remember the voter is a captive audience, the voter will not de construct, nor construct how his job is being offered. The voter trusts the scoundrels politicians, until they are found out with their deceits. In 2008, when the scraggy turd of Papandreu won his election it was through outrageous promises of bonanzas to come. “Money is availabe”, shouted the yellow jaundiced dog of papandreu, “Pasok will distribute this largesse” .

Soon after he won his scam election, suddenly the money had dissapeared.  The EU kept pumping loans and more loans, credit and more credit to Greece, knowing full well the Greek Government incapacity to ever re pay those loans. The Greek political thieves and crooks reasoned that if the gangsters of the EU were so prodigious with their largesses and bountifullness, knowing full well of the conditions, let’s take it and eat it up ourselves. That is what happened in Greece, and the poor Greek voter-salaried worker now has to pay for the politicians fiancial and economic skullduggery .
