Nazi themes

There is an article here showing how successful films and other light entertainment were in Hitler’s Germany. Hollywood is Leftist too, of course. But Leftists have to be good at propaganda or they would not survive. Reality does not suit them at all. The article mentions Nazi themes as “law and order”, “national respect”, “homeland”, “discipline and obedience” without mentioning that they were all Leftist themes in Hitler’s time. You can find such themes in the American “Progressives” of 100 years ago and also, of course in Marx & Engels. And if Marx & Engels were not Leftists, I do not know who would be. It is only silly old conservatives who advocate things like liberty and respect for the individual.

American Leftists hate patriotism now but they were happy to use it in the past. And Leftists still use it today in places—China and North Korea being the obviously examples. Stalin used it in the “Great Patriotic war” too. And Ho Chi Minh (remember him?) used it to good effect in the ‘60s.

Marx did advocate liberty. He just did so in a revolutionary way.

The basic Marxist idea was that a vanguard of the working class would seize power. However, this would bring about an “end of history” in which the state would wither away, leaving only the “free” individual. There were to be no nations and no families, only the unimpeded, unlimited individual, sovereign over himself.

The left has always advocated liberty. Think of the French Revolution (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity), or of feminism (the “emancipation” of women).

That’s one reason why conservatives can’t just define themselves as the party of “liberty”. To do so would make us no different from left-liberals (or right-liberals).

At the very least, conservatives need to distinguish how our version of “liberty” is different to a liberal one.

Leftists actually are not good at propaganda, even though huge abundance of learning and intelligence has been thrown into it. It comes across as alien, and not least because very foreign sensibilities and characters are pushed to the forefront of it. The state apparatus of communist countries has been leaden, ham handed and bombastic in its propaganda offensives. Their advantage is that they are radical, and the right tends to cower in fear of being called radical on anything. What if our companies were to make advertisements saying that socialism is mass murder for the hell of it, or that government schools are instrumentalities of aggression? With themes like these, one radicalism would counter and neutralize or even overcome another, but the moderate right is frozen in fear of being called names, to the extent that they can’t see such an effect. If the left is for freedom for aggression, and the right will say they want freedom from aggression, and define and draw out this distinction, the left would be in constant retreat modality.
