New blog announcementCan you imagine a blog that would be less interesting than a blog about the Bible written by an atheist? Sounds about as irrelevant and stupid as you could get, right? I guess it is. But for my sins I have just started such a blog. What happened was that I put up on Dissecting Leftism a post about The Holy Trinity. I have a fair bit of knowledge of theology that is left over from my dim distant past as a Christian (during my teens over 40 years ago). And I used that knowledge to say why I thought the trinity doctrine was a load of old cobblers. Rather to my surprise, however, that post attracted a lot of emails and I came to rather regret raising the matter as I think that what I wrote did disturb a lot of good Christian people whom I really had no wish to disturb. Nonetheless, lots of people obviously wanted to debate the matter with me so how should I handle that? At the risk of satirizing myself, I decided that I should start another blog for discussing purely Biblical matters. I obviously don’t expect a great readership but if anybody is interested in discussing the implications of central Bible texts with an atheist, it is there. Unlike most atheists, I do treat the Bible texts with great respect. I would however advise readers NOT to visit unless they are prepared to risk exposure to possibly threatening unorthodox views. So see “A scripture blog”. I already have enough up to generate a few thoughts, I hope, and I intend to add more daily. Posted by jonjayray on January 10, 2005, 11:38 PM | # I am actually a double-dyed atheist. I cannot even see that the idea of God is meaningful. If you are going to say that something out there is eternal, why cannot it be the universe? By the way, just to irritate “Blevins” I might note that I am already getting correspondence from theologians about my posts so that is pretty good early recognition of their interest. 5
Posted by Svigor on January 11, 2005, 03:34 AM | # That didn’t answer my request. On what (other than faith or intuition) do you base your atheism? 6
Posted by jonjayray on January 11, 2005, 06:22 AM | # I base nothing on nothing. How can i base a lack of belief on anything? As far as I know God is just dog spelt backwards. I know of no evidence to the contrary 7

I know of no evidence to the contrary Good God man, that’s not what atheism is! Atheism is active disbelief. It requires only slightly less faith than belief! You’re describing agnosticism. In my opinion, atheism makes sense in a spiritual sense (my intuition, my guts lead me to atheism), but not in a logical one; for the latter, only agnosticism fits. 9

How very brave of you, announcing your… possibly threatening unorthodox views. Ohhh, I’m scared. Let me guess.. uh.. your sceptical of the Trinity? Oh how brave, very original.
Oh, you’re an atheist… what bravado… so rare a position in these times, you know. No doubt Betrand Russell will be seen as a wilting lilly, compared to you.
Oh, let me guess… this is an “ad hominem attack”?
