‘One day, on the model of the United States of America…’

’...a United States of Europe will come into being.’  George Washington (1732-1799) in a letter to French revolutionary Lafayette.

M-BetsyRossUSflag.gif eu-flag.jpg

There is a presumed history of things that is taught to most, that even the less powerful from amongst the elites believe…and then there is another history of these events, that only a relative few and powerful know.  It is important for those wishing to see not only the preservation of their own people, but the other various peoples of the world as well that make up humanity, to have an excellent grasp of the past so as to see clearly as to what to do in the present.  Hence entries here such as this…

As heralded by the 1776 Revolution and proclaimed on the Great Seal of the United States, a ‘New Order’ of things is to be established on the earth.  This order is to be based on the British Empire’s New World colonies (the thirteen) with their accompanying ideology initially called ‘Continentalism’ and in time ‘Manifest Destiny’, the premier geopolitical unit being the continental super-state, democratic republican in form, and ‘free trade’ to be promoted within and without, as modeled by the United States of [North America].  Within the thirteen colonies an already existent, largely natural and organic individualism, would be exploited and within the US this would be replaced by the promotion of an artificial and hyper-individualism.    Something similar would be the case with the collectivism of the controlled counter-revolution to the American, the ‘Red Republicanism’ of France, and then (particularly evident) with the Russia of the USSR.  For the most part the construction of these continental super-states across the world during the next 150 years would be spear headed militarily, generalled by Washington in North America, Napoleon in Europe, Bolivar and San Martín in South America, Trotsky in Eurasia (ie the Soviet Union), and somewhat more politically by Sun Yat Sen in China, and later militarily by Mao when it went the path of Red Republicanism instead of the American model.    In Africa, in the mid to latter 20th century, this effort at creating a continental super-state would be largely a political effort.

Slavery, a scourge upon man, and practiced by a self-centered relative few at most everyone else’s great expense, would as it was in the world of 1776 and 1789, remain a primary, some might say central, part of the economic system of this New Order that was being established, now manifesting itself in a different, expanded, and far more virulent and destructive form, known euphamistically as ‘cheap labor’.

Europe would get special attention by both US and UK elites, in the construction of the continental super-state known initially as the United States of Europe, and now known as the European Union.  In the same way that the US and the American Union are the same, so are the US of Europe and the European Union…

From an article in Open Democracy written by Le Monde’s former editor, André Fontaine, in November 2001.

“I am a citizen of the greatest Republic of Mankind. I see the human race united like a huge family by brotherly ties. We have made a sowing of liberty which will, little by little, spring up across the whole world. One day, on the model of the United States of America, a United States of Europe will come into being. The United States will legislate for all its nationalities.” George Washington

Excerpt from an article entitled The United States of Europe published in April, 1898, in the United States.

The United States of Europe

“...you may be sure that the financiers will step forward and arrange among themselves an international understanding. The money centres once working in union, the governments will follow, then the people.

Was it not the “capitalists” of our country that instigated the insurrection in Cuba?

We will see a United States of Europe, united in finance, and many political questions which today appear without possible solution (because we insist on arguing on abstract ideas - patriotism, republicanism, “jingoism”) will be straightened out by financial necessities, as surely as the mountain snow melted by the sun runs by nature’s laws in the streams and rivers to the sea.

This new “union of states” will have all the attributes of our own. Where there is an even greater mixing of peoples, Asia and Europe having each contributed its contingent, they will develop the same financial ferocity and their politics will be the politics of money. Battles will be fought out at the Stock Exchange.

When Cleveland’s warlike message made American securities drop on the London markets, how we became suddenly pacific as by enchantment!

The social formula of the future will be bitter protection of money interests, and local patriotism replaced by a ferocious individualism.

Another similar article published in April 1899, also in the US.

...The United States of Europe, so long dreamed of and written of by European reformers, seem today but the shadow of a name; but whoever remembers the history of the consolidation of France and Italy, or Germany, or the still more remarkable history of the consolidation of the Swiss cantons composed of peoples of different races, speaking different languages, into a coherant national federation, will not say that a United States of Europe is an impossibility. On the contrary, the whole course of the modern history of nation building foreshadows a European federation.

From an editorial commentary published May 13, 1848…once again in the United States.

Suppose those European nations to have settled their governments, and then to have made a Federal Union of the whole, within which peace and free trade should be perpetual, as they are between our states.    And then suppose the United States of America were invited to join with the United States of Europe, not in political connection, but on the basis of peace and free trade!    We desire to prepare our readers for such a question…

Shortly after the formation of the ‘special relationship’ between the US-UK and just prior to the Hague Peace Conference of 1899, the book The United States of Europe is published by the prominant British journalist W.T. Stead.    Below are some lengthy excerpts from Part I, chapter 5, of the book, and is entitled ‘Europa’...

Question: “What is England’s mission abroad?”
Answer: “To maintain the European Concert - that germ of the United States of Europe - against isolated action…”

It may be that the new Continent of the West [America] may yet challenge successfully the primacy of the older world. But except in alliance with Britain, no such challenge can be dreamed of for a century, and Britain is European as well as American, Asiatic as well as African. For as the Tsar is Emperor of all the Russians, so Her Majesty is Empress on All the Continents and All the Seas.

The United States of Europe on the Eve of the Parliament of Peace - 1899

...Again and again the wiser heads amongst them had devised more or less elaborate plans for securing German unity. After the fall of Napoleon, the best that could be done was the Bund, which was almost as provoking in its deliberative inaction as the European Concert is to-day. But the Bund perished at the sword’s point, to be succeeded by the North and South German Confederations, which in turn disappeared when the victories over France rendered it possible for the Prussian King to be proclaimed German Emperor in the Palace at Versailles. Since then unified Germany has been at peace. Germany has become a unit, and the Reichstag, although sorely distracted by the fissiparous tendency of the German parliamentary man, has been the parliament of the United Empire.

How long will it be, I wondered, as I wandered through the building of the Reichstag, before unified Europe has its Parliament House, and the Federation of Europe finds for itself a headquarters and a local habitation for a permanent representative assembly?

What Germany has done, Europe may do.

The Union of Germany has not resulted in the disarmament of Germans, neither would the Constitution of the United States of Europe lead to the disarmament of the Continent. But no German now buckles on the sword with any dread lest he may have to unsheathe it against a brother German. The area within which peace reigns and the law court is supreme is now widened so as to include all German lands between German and France. That is an enormous gain. If we could achieve anything like it for Europe we might be well content.

The progress of mankind to a higher civilization has been marked at every stage by the continuous widening of the area within which no sword shall be drawn and no shot fired save by command of the central authority. In pure savagery every individual is a sovereign unit. The mateless tiger in the jungle is the most perfect type of the first stage of human individualism. Whom he will or can he slays, and whom he will or must he spares alive. His appetite or his caprice is his only law. He has power of life and death, and the sole right of levying war or making peace without reference to any other sovereignty than his own. From that starting-point man has gradually progressed by irregular stages across the centuries, until the right to kill, instead of being the universal prerogative of every man, is practically vested in about twenty hands -so far as white-skinned races are concerned. The first step was the substitution of the family for the individual as the unit of sovereignty. War might prevail ad libitum outside, but there must be peace at home. After the family came the tribe. After the tribe, the federation of tribes for purposes of self defence or of effective aggression. Then came the cities, with the civic unit. From time to time a despot or conqueror, driven by sheer ambition, established an empire, which, however imperfect it might be, maintained peace within its boundaries. Then nations were formed, each with their own organism and each allowing at first a very wide latitude for private and local war to their component parts. In our own history, not even our insular position prevented our forefathers, long after they had achieved some kind of nominal unity, preserving with jealous eye the right of private and provincial war. By slow degrees, however, the right to kill has been confined to even fewer and fewer hands. The mills of God have ground as usual very slowly, but those who took the sword perished by the sword, and the pertinacious asserters of the ancient inalienable right of private war were converted from the error of their ways by the effective process of extermination at the hands of a stronger power, determined that no one should wield the power of the sword but itself. In Germany to-day, in place of a hundred potentates, each enjoying the right to kill, William II is the sole War Lord.

Preface

This question of the United States of Europe has been one of the ideals towards which I have constantly, in fair weather and in foul, directed my course. Nineteen years ago, in the critical election of 1880, it was my lot to draw up an electoral catechism which was more widely used as an electoral weapon by the party which issued triumphant from the polls than any other broad sheet in the campaign. In this catechism I formulated my conception of the English foreign policy in terms which, after the lapse of nineteen years, I do not find necessary to vary by a single syllable:
Question: “What is England’s mission abroad?”
Answer: “To maintain the European Concert - that germ of the United States of Europe - against isolated action; to establish a Roman peace among the dark-skinned races of Asia, Polynesia, and Africa; to unite all branches of the English-speaking race in an Anglo-Saxon Bond, and to spread Liberty, Civilization and Christianity throughout the world.”
(“The elector’s Catechism.” General Election of 1880)
My last visit to Russia and the publication of this book are the latest efforts that I have made to realize the ideal which was clearly set out in the above sentence written in 1880. The conception in those days was confined to few, but nowadays the parties led by Lord Roseberry and Lord Salisbury would vie with each other in asserting their readiness to recognize the European Concert as the germ of the United States of Europe, and to develop the concerted action of six Powers in relation to the question of the East into a Federated Union of all the European States. It may perhaps be well worth while to form some idea of this new organic entity which it is the first object of our foreign policy to create. Are we repeating the crime of Frankenstein, or are we fashioning, like Pygmalion, a beautiful creature into which at the appointed time the gods will breathe the breath of life? In other words, what is this Europe whose United States we are seeking to federate?

Europe is a continent. It is hardly as yet a realized personality. There was a fair Europa in the mythology of the ancients, whom Jove loved, and whose story once suggested to Tenniel the idea that John Bull might aspire successfully to play the part of the Father of gods and men. But outside mythology there is little personification of Europe. The symbolical group at the base of the Albert Memorial, representing Europe as one of the four continents, is almost the only effort with which we are familiar in England.

But such personification of a Federation of States is possible enough. The United States of America form a federation which has its recognized symbolical embodiment in Columbia and its humorous personification in Uncle Sam. The British Empire is a conglomerate far more heterogeneous and wide-scattered than the United States of Europe, but we have our symbol in the heroic figure of Britannia and our familiar personification in John Bull. The German Empire, to take another illustration, is also a conglomerate of kingdoms and duchies and cities; but the first great effort of German art to express in permanent form the triumph of German arms in the attainment of German unity was the erection of the colossal statue of Germania upon the wooded heights of the Niederwald where she still keeps watch and ward over the German Rhine. But in all these cases it must be admitted there is a certain unity of national type which facilitates the task of personifying the federal combination.

Towards the Federation of the World - USA and USE

There remain to be noticed but two of all the band of nations whose States will form the European Union -England and Germany. These two Empires, which are at present sundered by a certain jarring dissonance that is all the more keenly felt because their temperaments and ambitions are so much alike, are the Powers naturally marked out for promoting the complete realization of the ideal of the United States of Europe. Some months ago I took the liberty of describing the German Emperor as the Lord Chief Justice of Europe. It is a role which he alone is competent to fill. No other potentate on the Continent has either the energy, the ambition, or the idealism capable of playing so great a role. Germany, which, after the travail of ages, has achieved her own unity, is of all the Powers the best fitted to undertake the leadership in the great work of completing the federation of Europe. Germany, also, from her central situation, is better placed than any other Power for undertaking the task. The traditions also of the Holy Roman Empire still linger around the Eagles of Germany, and the Empire is already the nucleus of a combination which places the forces of Central Europe, from Kiel to Brindisi, at the disposal of the Alliance. The Kaiser quite recently informed us that it is not his fault that more cordial relations have not been established between the Triple Alliance and France. As this is written he is about to visit St. Petersburg, when he will undoubtedly endeavor to draw closer the ties which unite Germany and Russia. Should he succeed in his endeavors, the attainment of a practical federation of Europe without England would lie within his reach.

But if Europe without France would be unthinkable, and if Europe without Germany would be Europe without reflective brain and the mailed hand, what could we think of Europe without England? It does not become me as an Englishman to say much in praise of my own people. But this I may say, that Europe without England would be Europe without the one Power the expansive force of whose colonizing and maritime genius has converted Asia and Africa into European vassals and has secured the American and Australian continents as receptacles for the overflow of Europe’s population. And this also may be added, that Europe without England would be Europe without the one Power whose sovereignty of the seas is nowhere exerted for the purpose of securing privilege or favor for English flag or English trade. Nor must it be forgotten that Europe without England would be Europe without the one country which for centuries has been the inviolable asylum alike of fugitive kings and of proscribed revolutionists, the sea-girl citadel of civil and religious liberty, whose Parliamentary institutions have been imitated more or less closely by almost every civilized land. Europe without England would be Europe without her wings, a Europe without the sacred shrine where in every age the genius of Human Liberty has guarded the undying flame of Freedom.

The Federation of Europe at the present moment is like an embryo in the later stages of gestation. It is not yet ready to be born. But it has quickened with conscious life, and already the Continent feels the approaching travail.

It has been a slow process. The great births of Time need great preparations. Under the foundations of the Cathedral of St. Isaac at St. Petersburg a whole forest of timber was sunk in piles before a basis strong enough for the mighty dome could be secured. The Federation of Europe is a temple far vaster than any pile of masonry put together by the hands of man. In the morass of the past its foundations have been reared, not upon the spoils of the forest, but upon generation of living men who have gone down into the void from red battlefield and pest-smitten camp and leaguered city in order that upon their bones the Destinies might lay the first courses of the new State. Carlyle’s famous illustration of the Russian regiment at the siege of Zeidnitz, which was deliberately marched into the fosse in order that those followed after might march to victory over a pavement of human heads, represents only too faithfully the material on which these great world fabrics are reared.

Nor is it only the individuals who have perished by the million, in blind struggling towards they knew not what, which have supplied the substratum upon which the United States of Europe were slowly to be built. Political systems, laboriously constructed by the wisdom of statesmen and minutely elaborated to meet the ever-varying exigencies of their day, royal dynasties and great empires have all equally been flung into the abyss like rubble, after having served their turn to make foundation material for that which is to come. In preparing great political events Nature works with the same almost inconceivable patience and inexhaustible profusion that may be witnessed in the formation of the crust of the earth or in the evolution of a highly organized species. For, as Ibsen has said, Nature is not economical. And in the preparation of the foundation of Europe she has hurled into the deep trench so much of the finished workmanship of preceding ages as to provoke a comparison with the work of the barbarians, who made hearthstones of the statues chiseled by the pupils of Praxiteles, and who utilized the matchless sculpture of the temples of the gods in the construction of their sties.

As with so many things in the United States, and as others that visit this site from US will no doubt certainly attest, the United States of Europe (now known as the EU) is not much taught about in the US schools.  I certainly don’t recall it.  What are those in power afraid of?

This quote strikes me as transparently bogus. The earliest reference I can find to it is from the 1960s. One of the early references I’ve found comes from Coudenhove-Kalergi, the half-Japanese founder of the Pan-European Union, who may well be the inventor of this quote.

I located the source of the spurious quotation:

Washington wrote to Lafayette that he considered himself a “citizen of the great republic of humanity,” * adding: “I see the human race a great family, united by fraternal bonds.“2 Elsewhere he wrote prophetically: “We have sown a seed of liberty and union that will gradually germinate throughout the earth. Some day, on the model of the United States of America, will be constitided the United States of Europe.“1

Title   The people of action: an essay on American idealism
Authors   Gustave Rodrigues, James Mark Baldwin
Translated by   Louise Seymour Houghton
Publisher   C. Scribner’s Sons, 1918
http://books.google.com/books?id=b8Y9AAAAYAAJ

This is an English translation of an essay by “Frenchman” Gustave Rodrigues. Rodrigues, in turn, cites a biography of Washington by another Frenchman, Fabre. Here is the transcription (from the Library of Congress website, which also hosts images of the manuscript) of the actual letter from Washington to Lafayette that is cited:

Altho’ I pretend to no peculiar information respecting commercial affairs, nor any foresight into the scenes of futurity; yet as the member of an infant empire, as a Philanthropist by character, and (if I may be allowed the expression) as a Citizen of the great republic of humanity at large; I cannot help turning my attention sometimes to this subject. I would be understood to mean, I cannot avoid reflecting with pleasure on the probable influence that commerce may hereafter have on human manners and society in general. On these occasions I consider how mankind may be connected like one great family in fraternal ties. I indulge a fond, perhaps an enthusiastic idea, that as the world is evidently much less barbarous than it has been, its melioration must still be progressive; that nations are becoming more humanized in their policy, that the subjects of ambition and causes for hostility are daily diminishing, and, in fine, that the period is not very remote, when the benefits of a liberal and free commerce will, pretty generally, succeed to the devastations and horrors of war.

Some of the late treaties which have been entered into, and particularly that between the King of Prussia and the Ud. States, seem to constitute a new era in negotiation, and to promise the happy consequences I have just now been mentioning. But let me ask you my Dr. Marquis, in such an enlightened, in such a liberal age, how is it possible the great maritime powers of Europe should submit to pay an annual tribute to the little piratical States of Barbary? Would to Heaven we had a navy able to reform those enemies to mankind, or crush them into non-existence.

I forbear to enter into a discussion of our domestic Politics, because there is little interesting to be said upon them, and perhaps it is best to be silent, since I could not disguise or palliate where I might think them erroneous. The British still hold the frontier Posts, and are determined to do so. The Indians commit some trifling ravages, but there is nothing like a general or even open war. You will have heard what a loss we have met with by the death of poor Genl. Greene. General McDougal and Colo. Tilghman are also dead.

This is typical enlightenment pablum. No talk of a “United States of Europe” here, nor “elsewhere” from Washington. The other quotation Rodrigues attributes to Washington is merely the 19th-century French biographer putting words into the mouths of “Washington and his friends” without citing any source, Washington having never written anything like this:

Les États-Unis garantissent à chaque État admis
dans l’Union une forme républicaine de gouvernement ;

A l’unanimité, Washing-
ton fut nommé président des Etats-Unis.

Clarifying a bit, for the first 150 plus years or so after the 1776 Revolution, the United States of Europe (USE) was pushed for Europe.    Towards the mid 20th century, when people in Europe got understandably weary of the idea of being made into something just like the US, those promoting the USE simply played a shell game and started calling it the European Union, counting on people in Europe to not quite grasp that in the same way that the USA and the American Union are the same entities, so are the USE and the European Union.

WT Stead, the British Establishment journalist who wrote the 1899 book ‘The United States of Europe’, was not just any journalist.  He was a close associate of the mining magnate Cecil Rhodes of Africa fame.

A curious quote from Stead’s 1899 book.  wink

‘The Federation of Europe is a temple far vaster than any pile of masonry put together by the hands of man.’

While America Drowns, Obama and the Elites Party
There is, yet again, something very Romanesque about the state of the Americans, their empire and their collapse. As the US continues to sink in its co-UK created economic armageddon, the ruling regime enjoys the fruits of its labour of looting and swindling. This is the great “Democracy” they sell us, overseas.

As the year ended, America suffered one of its worst months for employment. Sure, reading the official Ministry of Propaganda (so called free press) reports showed only a mere another 85,000 Americans as loosing jobs, or rather the work force shrinking by that amount, so it takes the UK Telegraph (America slides deeper into depression as Wall Street revels ) to report the real situation, that 650,000 unemployed were moved into a category named “No Longer Searching For Jobs”. This is how the American regimes “honestly” tell the population that the unemployment rate is not going up and the lie they tell the rest of us, fortunate not to live under this deceit. This is the category that DC uses to dump the unwanted, unneeded and unemployable waste, its workers who no longer get government unemployment help and can go starve for all the elites care. After all, judging by the head lines out of DC, for the Haitians there is money, for their own unemployed, shelters and bread lines. This category has been growing by nearly half a million every month for the last year.

The hits kept on coming, too, for the former partiers of the American economic “miracle” of debt. Like a crippled Hercules, trying to lift a mountain of debt, or rather trying to keep it above their heads and from crushing them, the American populace continues to strain and tire and suffer, even as they deny reality while their legs sink deeper under their burden.

News came that inflation was really low in 2009, under 2%. Of course, the fact that salaries sank was not counted into that “fixed” model of inflation, otherwise the picture would not be so pretty. Outsourcing of jobs also accelerated, with predictions that up to 20% of the remaining jobs would still be outsourced, within the next few years. All hail the Marxist Free Trade. At the same time, news arrived that 1.4 million Americans went into bankruptcy last year, over a 30% jump from 2008. Food Stamps use, a form of government subsidy for food, was being given to over 10% of the population, with one third of the country’s children living in the abject poverty it takes to qualify for the handout.

At the same time, a massive new wave of mortgage defaults in the resettling of exotic mortgages, continued loss of jobs and thus regular mortgages and a collapsing business/commercial real-estate market is just starting to break over the Americans and promises to be worse than the first wave.

To all this, the American military has increased its budget by some $100 BILLION from 2009’s already mammoth $600 BILLION budget, more than every nation combined. And the people are continued to be led down the trail of slavery by their noses, in fear of being “invaded” or “attacked” while their sons sit in some 100 nations around the world, enforcing the Empire. Yet despite this giant spend on the military, families of US soldiers continue to have to buy body armour and other equipments and send them to their sons, since there are no funds for that armour and equipments, not after the elites and their companies get done pilfering the giant sum. Remember too, this does not include another $40 or so BILLION for the wars!

Equally, the evils of Wall Street, the pack of hyenas, the cabal of witches who brought us the lovely Soviet Revolution, the Great Depression, the Nazi take over, the rape of post Soviet Russia, the Asian Flu, (The Six Evils of Wall Street and the Suffering of Humanity) are now paying themselves $146 BILLION in bonuses, 8% more than the 2007 record, after stealing $700 BILLION from the American tax serfs, through bought and paid for farce of their so called “Democracy”. That is some 20,000 people will be splitting $146 BILLION, or an average of $7.3 million each, for the people who are still laughing at all the Luciferien death and misery they caused by starting the lovely Great Depression II.

But best of all, it has now been brought out that the Obama Regime, much like Nero or Caligula, has been partying hard, with over 170 parties, receptions and big dinners, entertaining over 50,000 guests, flying in specialty chefs from around the world, all in this one year of power. That is, one party every two days. And the American serfs? They just bare it, grumble and pay their taxes, it si what they have been trained for. Oh sure, a bunch will get together here and there and wave signs and scream slogans for a few hours and then go home, feeling good that they did “something” and pat themselves on the backs for their “accomplishments” while promising to vote out the present elites and replace them with an exact same set from a different branch of the One Party Two Branch system. Someone famously called this: rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. And their so called conservative leaders on TV will tell them what great deeds they have done and how great they are, even as nothing changes and these so called leaders hustle books and t-shirts and caps to the impoverished but good feeling tax serfs. In other words, the bleeding continues.

So Yanks, you can take your so called Democracy, nothing more than pilfering of the people, and your Free Trade Marxism and go pound your heads into the wall. We do not want it, we do not need it and we will not have it. We will take our so called “pseudo” authoritarianism, mercantilism, and government that actually cares about us and we will grow, ignoring your “advice”, kicking out your so called NGOs who promote nothing but this “Democracy” and vassalage to your empire and destruction of our Christian Orthodox faith and we will be on our separate way. Now if we could only get our Monarchy back too.

Thanks for the commentary, n/a, but besides the former editor of the French magazine Le Monde, the just retired from office Prime Minister of Belgium Guy Verhofstadt also quotes Washington as saying this, so I think for the time being I’ll work with the presumption that they either have additional and or better source materials than what you might have happened across as you Googled.

‘And yet, the very first person to have this dream was not European, but American - and no ordinary American, but George Washington himself! Over two hundred years ago in a letter to his European friend, the Marquis of Lafayette, Washington wrote, and I quote: “I am a citizen of the greatest Republic of Mankind. I see the human race united like a huge family by brotherly ties. We have made a sowing of liberty which will, little by little, spring up across the whole world. One day, on the model of the United States of America, a United States of Europe will come into being.’

That the subject material that constitutes this thread is broached at all would seem possibly for some reason to be quite a sensitive thing with you, n/a.  You know, those doing these things count on the peoples of the world to be too proud to engage in frank self-examination of their history, so as to get away with the very destructive things they are doing.  Sad to say, their thinking in this would appear to be all too often correct.

From the horse’s mouth as it were regarding this subject…in two parts.

“Yet Freemasonry is not limited to the individual and the group he establishes contact with. It is involved in scale projects hinting at the future of nations, their continents and the whole world as an ensemble…”

“The United States of America represent the first Masonic state”

European Unification -
A Masonic Accomplishment

“Masonry is a way of perfection. The man, as an individual, ascends on the path of wisdom and selflessness; he comes near the Supreme Being. A Mason discovers inside the Lodge the atmosphere of Fraternal harmony. It is herein that the Masonic demeanour is outlined and the moral values, which are to be followed in his profane life as well, are favoured. Yet Freemasonry is not limited to the individual and the group he establishes contact with. It is involved in scale projects hinting at the future of nations, their continents and the whole world as an ensemble, searching for the adequate ways and means to ensure an ascending evolution towards light, more and more light.

Freemasonic elite devotes praiseworthy efforts in order to shape out events and evolutions that become history due to their consummation through the irreversible passing of time. Freemasonic elite had many visionaries who were considered dreamers until their ideas became reality. They set out the blueprint of a better world according to the ideals of liberty, fraternity, dignity, justice, equity of justice and chances, moral status, prosperity and peace. It is a continuous fight against oppression, corruption, injustice, poltroonery, ignorance and lie; a perpetual searching for truth. Masons became history makers through this seeking of the ways towards a better and more righteous world.

The United States of America represent the first Masonic state. The first president, George Washington, was not only a Mason of the highest degree but also a visionary. One can say that the American Constitution was inspired by the Masonic ideas. Everyone who travels to the USA and gets to Washington is attracted to the obelisk monument dedicated to the man who inspired the name of the city. A vast system of open spaces and alleys descends in a smooth slope from the monument to the Capitol, where the American laws are elaborated. At the bottom of the Washington monument there is a unique big inscription carved in bronze saying: “This monument dedicated to G.W. . was build in an ample Masonic ceremony”. About our national history we can remember Nicolae B\lcescu and Alexandru Ioan Cuza. However, the dawn of Europeanism appeared in the exact time of the constitution of the national states.

As Giuseppe Mazzini pointed out in 1821, “.the history of (unified, a.n.) Europe is at dawn”. A remarkable contribution to the blueprint of the European idea came from Aurel Popovici, a Romanian who lived in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. He foresaw its end confronting the imperial idea with the idea of a federal union. It’s a pity that the warning of the First World War was not sufficient. The ensemble of the ruined European countries was replaced in its first role on the level of world history by the United States of America and the Soviet Union. Then, the Second World War, mainly an intra - European fratricidal war of cvasi - apocalyptical amplitude, followed. The human and material losses were beyond measure and dismay reigned everywhere. There were smoking ruins, famine, clusters of mutilated and ill people, the remembrance of recent aversions, the horrors of the extermination camps, the massacres in Katin and Fântâna Alba. One of them was the killing of that great number of children seeking refuge in Dresda, the city of arts and muses, which was bombed with unjustified cruelty the day before the surrender of Germany. All these furnish irrational hatred set on extreme nationalisms, and moreover, a moral disaster, a profound ideal crisis.

The legend of the Phoenix bird? Europe’s rebirth, as a possibility, was taken into consideration with maximum scepticism because a vast percentage of “intelligence” and the bearers of spirituality were lost. Germany had few men and, more important, young men left in a period in which the Soviet colossus occupied and kept under terror the eastern side of Europe as far as the divided Berlin thus threatening with invasion as far as the Atlantic.

Yet, the results of the progressist thinking distilled in the Masonic workshops of the 19th century (let us remember Mazzini’s “Giovine Europa”, from the first part of that century), the thinking promoted by the English federalists, who became conspicuous at the end of the last two centuries after which the focus of the federalist ideas came back to the continent, start to ripen in the previous years to the last World War. Let us think about the well-known “Manifesto Ventotene” by Altiero Spinelli, a fundamental document of the European federalism. It would be unfair not to recollect that the Austrian count Coudenhove Kalergi, after the painful experience of the First World War, founds the Paneuropa organization whose target was to constitute the United States of Europe. Nevertheless, we should underline the initiative of Aristide Briand, the French Minister of External Affairs, and his counterpart, Gustav Stresseman, who suggested a European union inside the Nations’ Society from Geneva.

The beginning of the Second World War seemed to cut off these approaches. We must acknowledge that the European idea (i.e. federal) was known only by a minority and only a few initiated really understood the profound message of fraternity. During the war Christianity was forgotten or restrained by force in closed national spaces, thus seemingly losing its universality, and the first law imposed by God to Moses was simply defied. Under these circumstances, the light of hope in a lasting peace, maybe even perpetual as the one Emmanuel Kant dreamed of, is set on by Winston Churchill, a Mason, 33°, on the occasion of the Haga Congress on the 9th of May 1948, bringing together more than 600 representatives of the federalist cores throughout Europe, that is including the countries occupied by Soviets represented by personalities living in exile. He was initiated on the 24th of May 1901.

It is the Constitution Congress of the European Movement that set its objective the European Unification in a federalist manner. The European movement set its structures as early as this Congress: an International Committee led by a President, and national sections led also by a President. The Romanian deputation at the Constitution Congress of the European Movement was formed by Grigore Gafencu, Gabriel Badarau and George Cioranescu, the latter becoming the President of the Romanian Section of the European Movement as late as 1990 when leadership was taken over by the country organization.

The unification strategies were discussed during the Congress and the European Institutions were outlined: the foundation of the European Council was suggested. Its activity began one year later but it would lose its importance. Then the European Commission, the European Council (of ministers), the Court of Justice and the Audit Office. The idea of the European Parliament would appear later but the institution would have the same importance as the Commission. The most significant accomplishment of the European Council is the “Convention for Saving the Human Rights and the Fundamental Liberties”, edited in the purest Masonic spirit.

The essence of European unification is the transfer of power from the national sovereign and independent states to a supranational power, i.e. European. This project represents a historical leap previously unachieved because the attempts and the success, of much or less extent but still ephemeral, were done by force and were of hegemonic nature. The blueprint of a new Europe was created on the basis of the great values promoted by Masonry: peace, liberty, equity, fraternity. Europe was tired because of the two World Wars during a single generation. The desire for long-lasting peace was great and justified, to say the least, by the precepts of all the great religions. (One of the conditions of joining Masonry was the faith in God. The Christian religion, predominant throughout Europe, would not become exclusive.)

Europeans, on whose territory the two World Wars proved their monstrosity, understand best the value of peace. The new European Constitution, edited in Laeken, sets peace at the beginning, next to the definition. Not even now, more than half a century later, does the European Union especially bank on arming, nor does it have a full-sized military structure; it does not encourage military actions. Even if the success of such an operation is perfectly visible due to the supremacy of the military force, there is a strong sense of defeat on a philosophical level, and the nations sense this instinctively. A light of his age, Albert Einstein said: “Peace cannot be kept by force. It may only be obtained by understanding”. Above anything, peace means love of people. There is usually not a great deal of discussion about the overwhelming number of children killed during every war. They are the so-called “collateral losses”. An entire world disappears with each child that is killed.

The restoration of the national states according to the previous patterns, with the mutilations of the borders imposed always by the conquerors to the defeated, meant the perpetuation of war through the mediation of the national hatred by the passing of time. The way of federalization is that when all the European peoples consent to share a common future, of peace, but also of prosperity and liberty. The essential moment of the sublime French-German reconciliation is registered on the plate set on the ground in front of the Cathedral in Reims (we signal the symbol of the cathedral and the cathedral builders) that says: “In this place the Chancellor Konrad Adenauer and President Charles de Gaulle kneeled to seal the continuous French-German friendship”. I also kneeled on the same plate in front of the Cathedral in Reims that, for me, a Mason and Europeanist, has the importance of a pilgrimage place.

To accomplish the federalization of Europe, the European Movement should have convinced (rather than fought) two essentially different forces: first, the European nations, i.e. the residual mentality fed by mutual adversities emphasized after the war. Second, the governments of the national states that displayed reticence to the idea of giving in their sovereignty. From the constitution of the European Council on the 5th of May 1949, it was obvious that the governments did not agree to have their prerogatives diminished. This is still obvious, especially in the case of the recently adhered (Poland, etc.), that display their own opinions and external politics. Still, the federal Europe must have a single outlook concerning external affairs.

The leaders of nowadays Romania did not agree on a federal Europe, but they suggested, however rarely and without being convinced of it, a co federal Europe, thus preferring an intergovernmental formula. The European Movement applied a stratagem in order to overpass the reserves and even the hostility of the governments. The strategy of Jean Monnet, a counsellor to Charles de Gaulle for economical rehabilitation at that time, consisted in focussing all forces on a single point which would generate a reshape of the entire system if hit. A condition for success would be the element of surprise. The plan was also agreed by Robert Schuman, the French Minister of External Affairs. A secret special representative reveals it to K. Adenauer who also agrees.

On the 9th of May 1950, at Quai d’Orsay, Robert Schuman read the declaration of the constitution of the European Community of Charcoal and Steel. The Vote was unanimous and the consequences of this act were immense. The High Authority, the leadership of ECCS, was no longer a subject to a government or a national state. It is the first transfer of power to a supranational instance. The Declaration points out: “in order to have peace we should have Europe”. These were a few words about the Masonic idea of freedom. Generally, the national states bear oppressive tendencies on their own population within their borders, especially on minorities, which are a subject to denationalization pressure. The Macedo- Romanians, this old people who had never had a country of their own thus being spread in many Balkan states. They faced difficulties in preserving national language and culture. The existence of the borders with their customs, frontier guards, passports, etc., underlines the obstruction of liberty. For half a century, the Macedo-Romanians from Romania and Bulgaria were not allowed to visit their relatives in Greece or Albania. Federal Europe becomes a space of liberty, not only of circulation, but also one that devolves from respecting the human rights as they are mentioned in the project of a European Constitution.

The Masonic concept of equity refers not only to individuals, who obtain European citizenship, but also to the nations of the federation. The way these are represented in the European Parliament and in the other European institutions is illustrative in this respect. There is no hegemony. Peoples keep their traditions and their whole linguistic and cultural individuality. Moreover, this is considered the greatest wealth of Europe, whose motto is “Unity in Diversity”. Peoples threatened with cultural-linguistic extinction are protected (considering, among others, the 1333 Recommendation of Europe’s Council concerning the Macedo-Romanians.)

Another fundamental concept for a new European social-political construction is fraternity. In political terms it deals with solidarity, which is substantial help provided by the wealthy European countries to less developed areas. We have the example of Spain, Portugal, Eastern Germany and Greece. Thanks to the provided help, these countries registered an economical-social boom, quickly reaching a standard of life that was not achievable otherwise. A new and bigger financial effort is needed in order to recover the “new wave” countries, recently detached from the Soviet Union. Romania, with rather far perspectives of adherence, is already receiving millions and millions of EURO, much more than Germany received during the Marshall plan. Let us hope that this financial infusion gets on the right spot! Concerning the social protection of the European citizen, this is superior to any other region of the globe and any other system practiced in the past.”

In the actual period, the European Union needs a Constitution. The Laeken Convention (also called Convent, an adequate Masonic term for the reality of this reunion led by Valery Giscard d’Estaing, who needs no presentation for the illuminated and aware Masons) succeeded in editing it. Despite the difficulties we are sure that the endorsement of the European Constitution is not far. The realization of a United Europe can not be done at once. It needs the successive periods of an uprising evolution, far from perfection. We are the contemporaries, apprentices, fellowcrafts, masters and architects of this great edifice. We can not pass through without pointing out the evolution of the terminology. From the European Economical Community (preceded by the European communities, ECCS and the EURATOM), the European Community to the European Union and maybe this is not it. These changes point to the fact that starting with the economic, there is a tendency to unite the politics, the spirit, the concept, the moral. And maybe the United Europe must represent, above everything, a moral space. Regarding this transformation, the vigilance of Freemasonry is a mission.”

About the European symbols

“In Freemasonry, the role the symbols bear is essential; they stamp the esoteric thinking, they found the Royal Art. The elaboration of the European symbols took considerable effort. Basically, the symbol conveys a message that is addressed to mind and heart with a minimum of expressive substances. Among the European symbols there are Masonic symbols, taken over or adapted. Preoccupation for symbol is present in Masonry (traditional) and in the new European construction. Let us briefly present you with the European symbols, the way they were published in successive issues of the European Thought, edited by the European Movement, Romanian National Section.

The European Flag is a quintessence of symbols. The blue colour corresponds to the clear sky, the raising of the look and spirit to the highest and farthest dares. We look to the sky by raising our forehead and leaving aside the things that pull us back: the earthy pettiness. The golden colour of the stars expresses spirituality, nobility and on a blue background, purity. It is the colour of the haloes, the manner the saints were represented, as well on a blue background, but also of power, finding it in the western but also the extreme oriental imperial signs. The twelve stars aligned in a circle stand for perfection. 12 is the perfect Pythagoras number in which a maximum of the mathematical operations can be done. It has the cosmic correspondent of the twelve months of the year, there were twelve Apostles, etc. The starry sky above us, as appears to be the European flag will not change its appearance after several new states will be included in the European Union (the name is not unchangeable) nor after the perfection of its structures.

The motto of European Union is UNITY IN DIVERSITY. The unity we aspire for is in a continuous evolution, from the Economical Community of Charcoal and Steel and the EURATOM, to the European Economical Community (the Common Market), then to the European Community and finally to the European Union. The evolution of the names points out the passing from economy to politics. Soon, a European Constitution will be adopted and the European Citizenship will have a new dimension. We wish for a Europe with a better underlined executive leadership and with a single opinion concerning the external affairs. Unity means also fraternity, solidarity, the upraising of less-developed countries and regions because a Europe of contrasts is not desirable. In this way there are outstanding efforts to help the countries recently detached from communism.

Europe is the continent of nations reinforced by a long historical process. The history of our continent is outlined as a long series of national wars, the two World Wars, being nothing else than European fratricides representing the most tragic example. Inside a Union, wars between nations are no longer possible. We do not wish the European Union to be a pot for mixing up peoples. On the contrary, the great wealth of Europe is the diversity of peoples and cultures, like a bouquet of flowers in which every one has its own glamour and charm. The European peoples and languages that are threatened by extinction, as the case is for Macedo-Romanians, are supported in order to offer them their existence. Europe maintains its national diversity and linguistic pluralism. Becoming a European does not mean forgetting about your country. On the contrary: patriotism, love for the country, living with the dignity of belonging to a people, will remain as powerful as ever. We can proudly utter that the descendants of the Dacians, one of the ancient people of the world, contributed to the patrimony of universal culture. We will recover the half a century of communism under the dictatorship of a party doubled by a repressive criminal institution. It was a dark period in which our spiritual and cultural values were strongly repressed but the attempt to create a man of no personality, dignity, and, if possible, of no God. Beyond the border of your country there is the larger border of Europe. We belong to the country but to Europe, this country of countries, too. The national conscience is doubled by the European conscience.

The European Hymn is one of the symbols with the most powerful affective resonance. A fragment from the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven was chosen, this German genius with Flemish roots who crowned the classicism of music. The Choir utters the inspired words of Schiller that call for joy and fraternity. It was chosen a symphony, that is, in Greek, a song together, a harmony, an expression of fraternity. This music means traditions and continuity, culture and elite. A new hymn (music and words) would have been menaced by a certain perishability.

The EURO banknotes

EURO, the European currency, began circulating on the 1st of January 2002.

The banknotes have the amount from 5 to 500 EURO. On the whole there are seven banknotes; seven is the number denoting the virtues of man, and the seven colours create the white light, the perfect light. The symbols that stand on the two facets of the notes are eloquent. Both facets bear elements of architectural buildings, the noble art that defines Masonry. The Supreme Being is the Great Architect of the Universe and the Freemasons work for his glory. The European Supranational Construction is a vast and daring work of architectural style. Set on solid foundations, the walls and the counter forts are rising in front of us.

Back to the European banknotes. On one of their facets there are windows of different architectural styles. The window stands for opening to the light, the sky, through which we look and understand the world outside, not only the sky, assimilated with the metaphysics, but also the earth, the material world, directly exposed to the perception of our senses. Without windows, the interior of a building will be dark. The window is the symbol of light. The diversity of styles indicates first respect for tradition, for the works of the predecessors, and second the fact that the light of the sun, the moon, or the ineffable one of the lighting can come to us through various windows. Just like the light of the Great Architect of the World comes to people through a variety of religions, every one having its personality (architectural, if you wish). On the other facets of the note there are bridges, daring and generous constructions that bind two shores, helping people to pass a river or a separating precipice. It is the symbol of trust, communication and bonds between men but also peoples.

The European coins have a European face and a national back. The model of the European face is common to all the coins of the same value. The EURO symbol is a stylized Epsilon, a sign for the prizing of the ancient Greek values. On the back, each nation picks up something defining, representing. For example, on the Irish coins there is the pound, on the Italian there is Leonardo da Vinci. On the upcoming Romanian coins there will be Eminescu, Brâncusi. Let us dream! Of course, the coins have universal circulation validity; yet we can recognize their country of origin thanks to the national reverse. With their two sides, the coins say: THE EUROPEAN MOTTO, UNITY IN DIVERSITY.

We end these considerations on the European symbols, without using them up. There is, of course, a quote from Mircea Eliade, that underlines their significance: “The symbol is a transcendental category of the spiritual height, of the extraterrestrial, of the infinite esoteric that reveal the man on his whole, for it address not only to the human intelligence but especially to the soul”.

In the end of this modest essay on the European construction I thought it fit to quote the words of our most brilliant Brother G.E. Lessing “The real works of the Masons are so great and they aim so far that there can be numerous centuries before the average man could say: here is what they accomplished! Nevertheless, they only fulfilled their service”.

Ditto!
