Population worries in Russia tooPresident Putin offered to pay Russian women to have more children in an attempt to stem a demographic crisis that has shrunk the Russian population by five million since 1991…. Pointing out that his country’s population was contracting by 700,000 a year, Mr Putin said: “We have often raised this subject but, to be frank, little has been done,” he said. Russia’s population has fallen from 148 million when the Soviet Union collapsed to less than 143 million today, because of a low birth rate and a huge number of alcohol-related deaths. Average male life expectancy is only 58.8 years. Experts have said that the population could drop as low as 100 million within half a century, and urged the Kremlin to allow millions of immigrants to supplement the workforce. But nationalists and leaders of the Orthodox Church firmly oppose that, fearing that a flood of Muslim and Chinese immigrants from ex-Soviet republics would corrupt what they see as Russia’s Slavic and Christian identity. Mr Putin, an only child and the father of two girls, proposed using some of Russia’s oil wealth to lower the mortality rate, increase the birth rate and entice ethnic Russians back from abroad. He said that the Government should increase monthly handouts for a first baby from 700 roubles (£14) to 1,500 roubles by the end of this year, and start paying 3,000 roubles a month for a second child. He also suggested a one-off payment of 250,000 roubles for each second child. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,13509-2174595,00.html Posted by jonjayray on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at 11:02 PM in Comments:2

How fortunate the Russians are to have a Church that defends the nation. It’s not surprising that Orthodoxy is more nationalistic. Although the religion is universal it tends to be difficult to separate from each Orthodox nation. For example under the Turks the Greek Patriarch became the head of the millet and so Orthodoxy was not just a religious but a civill institution. Orthodoxy and the Greek nation became inseparable in the minds of the Greek people. Many, perhaps most, Orthodox think of their church as being Russian, Serbian or Greek rather than the universal faith that it is. That nationalism is notable in countries that many Orthodox have settled in. Just outside of Toronto there is a Serbian and a Romanian Orthodox Church on the same street just a couple of blocks apart. One is unlikely to see two Catholic Churches so close to one another. But in the autocephalous Orthodox Church it is not unusual. Each nationality wants its own Orthodox Church linked to the old country. Late last year an international poll on whether immigration is good or bad for each country showed that in the EU the only Orthodox country, Greece, had the highest percentage saying immigration is bad. The only Christian countries in Europe more negative than Greece were Bulgaria, Serbia, Macedonia, and Russia - all Orthodox. 5

This is caused by the communist legacy of feminism, leading to excess public provision of higher education to females. They need to require those going to college on public funds, to be married and to have conceived a child by their first year’s end, and the same for each further year.
This should be for both sexes, and it would reduce the aggression in their country, since the funding for public higher education is taken by aggression on the net taxpayer. Other countries, such as SKorea with an even lower birth rate, should do the same, but Russia is important because destabilization there, through immigration or decline of population, is more disturbing to the world.
