Royal Governor Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757)

Jonathan Belcher

Some time back I came across this curious site.    While many amongst the sites article’s are rather mundane and not particularly interesting, a hand-full stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb and seemed quite incongruous with the rest, having some very unusual terms in the titles such as ‘Camerica’, ‘trilateral center’ and that much overused one ‘new world order’.  Seeing those terms at the time I smiled a bit, as probably about 95% (or more, though not all) of such writings are off the wall, over the top, mistaken, or faulty in some manner.  However, upon looking a bit closer, I found that the person who operates the site and had these articles written (if he did not write them himself) was not denouncing these subjects, as is usual, but rather clearly was an advocate.    He did not condemn these things, but lauded instead.  And some unusual subject matter it is.  He takes an in depth look at the history of British North America and its relationship with the British Empire in the decades just prior to the 1776 Revolution from angles rarely (if ever) seen.    He also writes of the nature of the Revolution and of the nature of the United States itself.    In much of the writing there seems to be almost an undercurrent of boasting, as if someone from a family once quite powerful, but now much reduced in its station and circumstances, was ‘showing off’ by way of revealing secrets long held.    The operator of the site has his reasons for this pride, for he is a member of the Jonathan Belcher family, historically one of the most powerful of British North America of the 18th and 19th centuries.  Below is a brief biography of the family patriarch, Jonathan Belcher, and a brief description of the Belcher family as a whole.

Jonathan Belcher was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1682, his father being a wealthy and prominent Boston businessman, his grandfather was an early Massachusetts colonist who had arrived in 1639.  Jonathan Belcher would grow up to become a very influential personage in the British North American establishment, being appointed by King George II the Royal Governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire (1730-41), and of New Jersey (1747-57).    Belcher would in his later years found the Ivy League school of Princeton in New Jersey and would be a benefactor of Yale University in Connecticut.    Jonathan Belcher’s second son Jonathan Belcher, Jr. (1710-1776) would be Chief Justice of Nova Scotia as well as it’s Lieutenant Governor, after having served in the Empire’s government in Ireland.    Jonathan Belcher’s great grandson was the British Arctic explorer *Sir Edward Belcher (1799-1877).    Jonathan Belcher himself would be the first “native born” North American member of a certain famous international organization.**

Here and there at this site, in the near future, I’ll be posting excerpts from some of these articles accompanied with a brief summary of what the author seems to be trying to say and a link to the original source.    I will call these ‘the Belcher papers.’  They provide much food for thought, and the reader can make of them what he will.    It has to be said, though, were someone to have a great knowledge about these things, it would be someone from a family such as the Belchers.

As a bit of an aside, the Belcher family descendant which operates the site, makes the claim that the shield (the Escutcheon) of the United States which appears in front of the eagle on the Great Seal is almost certainly modeled upon the Belcher coat of arms in honor of his family.    At the center bottom of the portrait of Jonathan Belcher above, commissioned and completed decades before the founding of the US, the Belcher coat of arms is visible, and it does indeed have quite a similarity with the US shield.

*Timber from one of the British explorer’s ships, the HMS Resolute, would be used to manufacture a massive oaken desk which was then presented to US President Rutherford B. Hayes as a gift by Queen Victoria in 1877.    Called “the Resolute Desk”, most US Presidents (including the present one) have used it as their Oval Office desk ever since.

**A quick search of the phrase ‘Jonathan Belcher, the first native-born American’ will tell you what that organization was.

“A quick search of the phrase ‘Jonathan Belcher, the first native-born American’ will tell you what that organization was.”  (—from the log entry’s footnotes)

Without looking, I think it’s pretty obvious it was the Freemasons.

Good entry, and I believe I can see what will be the thrust of Alex’s planned sequels:  Alex wishes to delve into the history of a centuries-old British imperial ruling class whose ambitions have always, since the reign of Elizabeth I, placed empire higher in importance than nation, making what’s going on today not just “nothing new,” and not just “only to be expected in light of what went before,” but “inevitable; no other possible outcome; in the cards for the past four hundred years.”

No, no Fred. It’s about the Americans being the proponent of universalism. It’s a tag team match. GW focuses on German moral debasement and Zeka, though not really English himself, will use the Yanks as whipping boys, in order to deflect any possible responsibility the English might have for the destruction of nationalism and the deployment of the demographic bomb. All that is needed is for Peterson to return to decry Nordicism and the cast will be complete. wink

Desmond,

Alex is not Alex Zeka - an altogether more political commentator who is not currently blogging at MR because of anger with Constantin’s former praises for Joseph Stalin.  I would very much like AZ to return, which he knows.  Phil Peterson too.  But that is wholly up to them.

Alex’s historical focus on the comity of the powerful is a worthy addition to the range of the blog.  I think his hard-drive contains as much novel and surprising information as yours, and I, for one, expect to learn a good deal from his contributions here, and to round my understanding of the way our world works.

In that case, please extend my apologies to Master Zeka.

Let the contest begin.

Your humble servant, sir,

DJ

Much more than stand aside, the English should have fought beside Germany in crushing Judeo-Bolshevism and ridding Europe of the Jews.  Their blunder may well yet have sealed the fate of the White race.

“The operator of the site has his reasons for this pride, for he is a member of the Jonathan Belcher family,”

No. Per the front page, the site is run by Fon R. Belcher (Ed.D., East Tennessee State University) of Kentucky, who apparently descends from a Virginia Belcher family. The Royal Governor comes from a New England family. If there’s a connection, it’s back in England.

Even were Fon a descendant of Jonathan Belcher, it’s improbable any “long held secrets” would have survived hundreds of years in the backwoods of Kentucky. Given the tenor of the “Belcher Foundation” site and the excerpts you’ve posted, I find it extremely unlikely the writings of Fon Belcher contain any valuable insights.

Our American ancestors did the same thing there Cap’n…

They didn’t think they were sealing the fate of the White race and I don’t think we can blame them for intentionally doing so.

It’s because there is/was no white race to consider. The conflict was, at best, ethnically based.

Yes, per the front page he is a member of that family, if but extended, which I probably should have included in the quoted phrase just in front of ‘member’.    It was somewhat difficult to tell from the rather extensive site what exactly his relationship was

From the site

The original Belcher to move into this area from Virginia was descended from an English family whose other American descendants included Colonial Governor Jonathan Belcher (1682-1757), royal colonial governor of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey, and the Founder of Princeton University.

Well now, I wouldn’t know about that.    Nor, do I think you do either.  Families, even extended ones, can and do keep in touch with each other, then as now.  They also can re-contact, and do their own research on their family history, the latter being something this person has clearly done to a great extent, though a person may not agree with the entirety of what is found and presented.

Given the tenor of the “Belcher Foundation” site and the excerpts you’ve posted, I find it extremely unlikely the writings of Fon Belcher contain any valuable insights.

I found the site generally to be quite well done myself.    He has clearly put a great deal of time, energy, and heart into it, though I don’t care for much of his philosophy.  Anyhow, as stated, it was posted to provide food for thought regarding certain of the information the site contained, it being up to the individual reader to make of it what they would.

I am a direct descendant of Governor Jonathan Belcher. Over the course of my life, I have seen possessions of Jonathan Belcher’s, including a journal of sorts. I can say I have never come across any “long held secrets” as people seem to think are passed along. However, there are pages within his books that seem to be nothing but nonsense. It has been written that Jonathan Belcher was a free mason. I suppose if you believe the conspiracies of the free masons and knew what you were looking at, all that nonsense might be something. But I can say I know of no long held secrets.

As I understand my history I also am a direct descendant of Jonathan Belcher.  My father was Russell Winston Belcher, a Freemason and I was raised in Cambridge Massachusetts. There are many “Belcher’s” floating around and currently there is an African American journalist…Cornell Belcher on CNN.  Related? I don’t know.
We must have fallen off of the royal map in my immediate family because we were very working class.  My Grandfather …Pearly Belcher they called him…probably for his pearly white skin…just like my own.  Pearly Belcher died working on a railroad during the depression and my father was very proud of his American Heritage, he never stopped talking about it.…When he told us that we were related to the Adams family…we would all break out into the Addaams Family theme song… 1970…or so.

Russell W. Belcher would have loved the internet…He died a proud American.  Everyone in his family served in the Navy but he had juvenile diabetes, and could only be a boy-scout leader but he had many Eagle Scouts come up in troop2-Cambridge Mass;  the oldest boy scout troop in the USA. Lisa Mullins on NPR news is related to the Belcher clan somehow… as I recall the Mullins family married into the Adams family and the Belcher family also had a thread in there somewhere?
I would have loved a college education from Harvard University but could only afford a U-Mass education.  Our home in Cambridge was recently added to the Historical Society of Cambridge Homes…because the person who purchased the home after my father died had it restored to the original architecture style.
The Freemasons were a part of the heritage in the Belcher family and I can tell you that there are secrets.  Every man in Free Masonry   was encouraged to keep one secret, from what I understand.  Unless you are a free mason…you will never know.

Cynthia L Belcher
