Schools Slow in Closing Gap Between RacesJ. Philippe Rushton posted [evol-psych yahoo] the above article by Sam Dillon in the New York Times regarding the much heralded closing of the intelligence gap between Blacks and Whites (11/20/2006). Dillon states “Still the studies have all concurred: the achievement gaps remain, perplexing and persistent.” It was mentioned that there have been six recent studies published on this issue, I just read four, and I believe I read the other two a couple of months ago. Nothing new really, except that the expected closing of “the gap” (PDF) just isn’t going to happen. There has been over 100 years of research looking at the difference between Blacks and Whites in intelligence, and the spread of about 15 points has been very consistent. In fact, accepting the Jensenist hypothesis that the difference in intelligence is primarily heritable, with a small portion being environmental, the gap should be much narrower than it is, given the environmentalists’ hypotheses. Since about 1970, there have been billions of dollars spent on special programs for Blacks to increase their academic performance. Starting with programs like Head Start, and later even more long term programs including “teaching to the test,” special tutoring programs, and especially staying in school during summer recess, they should have easily closed the gap with Whites by now. What in fact does happen is that the gap widens by 11 points between ages 4 and 23, instead of closing. The heritability of intelligence increases from about 40% for young children to about 80% for young adults. A lack of understanding that genetic control of the mind’s development is an ongoing process, as the brain expands, then prunes unneeded neurons, thickens the white fatty tissue around axons so that signals become more accurate and efficient, etc. confound research by those who are in denial of race differences. Charles Murray points out that the 2003 Supreme Court decision on affirmative action at the University of Michigan Law School was contingent on the belief that the achievement gap between Whites and Blacks could be eliminated within about 25 years. However, there is no evidence that this will be possible. And President Bush’s No Child Left Behind program (NCLB) is in even more of a dilemma. The NCLB program has been unraveling since its beginning—the program blames the schools, the educators, or lack of funds for Blacks (and other minorities) poor performance. At some point, as more research on the genetic component of intelligence supports the Jensenist position, it seems only natural that those who are unfairly blamed for the program’s failure will start to rebel against what is not their doing. So if the research is so solid with regards to the hereditarian position, how is it that the public is not aware of the results? I just finished reading “Blind Faith” by Sloan (2006), which is an excellent book on how big money and a handful of scholars are able to use shady science, along with the media, to promote a religious agenda against science—similar to the Intelligent Design approach. What is really ironic however is that Sloan falls into the same sloppy science when he discusses eugenics or racial differences in intelligence. This puts them into the interesting position of having to become more radical in their environmentalism over time, attributing the constant performance gap to shrinking environmental differences (e.g., “stereotype threat”). 3

It’s already an extraordinary state of affairs when psychometric and genetic knowledge is required to protect us against the political assault of egalitarianism. We managed perfectly well without them for centuries, of course, because we properly deduced from our civilisational superiority that we were superior as a people. But the middle years of the 20th century destroyed the basis for that. What was only ever the inchoate virtues of common-sense and long experience have proved completely incapable of withstanding the stream of anti-white racism coming out of the political and cultural Establishment. When I look at the present dispersment of forces it is not difficult to fall prey to pessimism. We have science, but it is a battlefield in itself. We have Nature. We have the still surviving last redoubts of common-sense. We are re-learning what these invaders are really like, and we are organising politically. But it is slow, slow work. On the debit side, we are frighteningly suggestible. We have no guiding idea to sustain us against the egalitarian brainwashing, no sense of destiny, no general confidence. Most of all, we have no philosophy, at least we English-speakers don’t (we never had an overt political nationalist strain in intellectual life, and Conservativism is notoriously non-philosophical). That’s the reason we have collapsed so spectacularly before the vicious and relentless moralising that, let us not forget, originated only among a miniscule number of academics and political activists. Against us now, though, are the forces of history, of the imperium, of demographics. They cover a battlefield as wide as the West. It should be obvious that IQ testing is only a rapier, and its best use is not in the broad area of popular conflict but in those tight corners where it would have greatest utility. It needs to be delivered into the hands of those engaged in the practical debate over educational goals and expenditure and quota-based employment policies. But right now the general tenor of debate is too anti-racist, and willing hands have absented themselves. So we come back to waiting for change to well-up among our kind, and embrazen some of those in public life to speak the unspeakable. It will. We have to keep speaking. 4

That’s not all he didn’t understand. He didn’t understand honesty. There can be no doubt but that he understood there are races and didn’t for one second believe his own race-denying sophistries. He understood the science, all right. What made him come out “against” that science was his inability to understand honesty. Like most communists he wasn’t able to grasp that politics ends where scientific inquiry begins and from there on it’s one-hundred-percent commitment to object truth to the best of your ability. Prof. Gould couldn’t get that. He didn’t have the stuff within him — didn’t have the honesty stuff within. 5
