SlootSloot translated by Emmet Silverman
Sloot is notoriously to translators what Rilke’s Tullia is to young nobles, “ruined on [her] mouth as if by poison.” The present work embodies a new approach for which I held great hopes, now dashed; what (if anything) remains in the wreckage, and whether it can be seen in certain lights to twitch and clench, even to rise to walk (after its own fashion) again, is left to the judgement of the public, or of eternity. The original text is technically a melange of travesties and is probably the culmination of a long literary development now (barring archeological serendipity) forever lost to us; an alternate view (which I reject) is that the work is an outlier unrelated to any school or tradition. The objects which were found with the manuscript can be interpreted so as to support either theory, as a final gesture of either respect for or mockery of the author. It is also possible that the so-called grave is not that of the author but of someone else, that it is not a grave at all but a “death assemblage” deposited by a natural event, or that it is a joke the point of which will permanently elude us played by someone we can neither imagine nor approve of. Sloot may be another such. Footnotes in the original have been either elided or spliced into the body of the translation.
