Sobran on the latest ostrich outrage

Keeping their heads in the sand:

American Airlines had printed a pilot-training manual in which it took candor to the point of insanity. A section of the manual titled “Survival in Latin America” cautions its pilots that Latin American passengers “expect not to depart on time. In fact, it’s rumored that they will call in a false bomb threat to delay a departure if they think they’ll be late.” Furthermore, the guide added, “They like a drink in the plane prior to takeoff. Unruly and/or intoxicated passengers are not infrequent.”

Well, wouldn’t you know. This manual fell into the hands of a lawyer, and moments later it was being broadcast on every radio station in the Western Hemisphere.

Within hours American Airlines issued an apology. “We deeply regret ... American Airlines holds our Latin customers in the highest regard ... demonstrate our commitment ...” et cetera.

Hehe. This is the sort of thing where I agree with the “worse is better” thing. Fuck corporate America. Let them walk the walk if they’re going to talk the talk, and take the concomitant hit to their wallets.

If Western airlines applied the same level of racial profiling to non-Whites as Israel’s El Al does to non-Jews we would all be a lot safer. However, it is certain that, as the Jews are among the most influential and hypocritically vociferous protesters against racial-profiling in the West, the avoidance of causing ‘offence’ to Muslims and other Third World trash infesting our countries is deemed of paramount importance.

Interesting article, but I’m not sure that Sobran’s equating multiculturalism and liberalism with Protestantism really holds water. If it did, how about South Africa?

The Dutch Reformed Church is both Protestant (in fact Calvinist) and racially separatist;

On the other hand, the Catholic liberation theology originally espoused by such as Dom Helder Camara is both Catholic and anti-racist, so I don’t think any neat distinctions can be made in regard to Catholic and Protestant attitudes to race issues.

Absent the Jews and the largest group of anti-apartheid South African citizens and permanent residents were those of British descent, the overwhelming majority of which could be regarded as nominal Protestants.

I went to a play at Ford’s Theater, with my wife – the play, “Our American Cousin.” It’s a good play – but, while talking to my wife I heard a loud pop coming from behind me, and then the lights went out. Yeah, it’s real dark here. What, did an oil stage lamp explode or something? Why is it so dark and quiet here? Mary, where are you? Will someone turn on the lights? This reminds me of a story back in Illinois….

You have to forgive Sobran his Catholic revanchism. It’s what brought him in from the, first, the liberal and then the Buckley-con cold. Perhaps it is necessarely harder for an old man such as himself to realise that the Pope has no clothing.

60 isn’t old Alex, I’m only 12 years off that myself . I think Sobran clings to the Catholic Church for intenmsely conservative reasons, because he sees it as a rock of stability in a shifting world where nothing seems certain. He also has a very atavistic view of the American Constitution in my view.

In a nutshell, I enjoy reading his essays and am grateful to him for putting them on his website free of charge, but I’d hate for him to run his country.
