Tech Tip: Save Streaming Media

A recent exchange here sent me looking (again) for a reliable way to save streaming media (dialup will do that to you). I may have finally found one:

I’d already tried their HiDownload app but it hadn’t proved reliable; it could download streams just fine, but it couldn’t always find them in the first place. That’s where URL Helper comes in: it “sniffs” your network connection and displays the URLs. You pick the one you want and pass it on to your downloader. In theory this should remove all the difficulty from the process.

Here’s the sequence:

1) Get your streaming media one click away from playing.

2) Start URL Helper (select your network adapter if necessary) and click “Sniff Network.”

3) Start the streaming media.

4) Watch URL Helper as the stream begins playing.

5) Click “Stop Sniffing,” then kill the media stream.

6) Pass the URL from URL Helper to your chosen stream downloader (Streamingstar’s HiDownload, CoCSoft’s Stream Down, etc.,).

Depending on what you have to pay for your downloader this may cost you up to $65, but you’ll finally have a way to get those pesky streams saved. I wish I’d had this for Katrina. If anyone finds a freeware stream downloader or sniffer, please let me know.

Update:

I found freeware that will download RTSP media, it’s called WellGet. Development on it seems to have stopped and the developer’s Website is defunct, so you’re on your own finding the version you like best. I’m testing 1.24 Beta right now.

Update 2:

I’ve tested several downloaders and HiDownload wins my recommendation. The rest are unreliable and like to quit mid-download or never start at all.
