The English farmer’s traditional flat hat now tabooA pub that banned drinkers from wearing hooded tops has now put a block on farmers wearing their flat caps - in case it offends the hoodies. The White Hart in Uttoxeter, Staffs, a favourite with farmers, recently introduced CCTV and banned hooded tops so that troublemakers might be more easily identified. Rob Woodward, the landlord, said it was only fair to widen the ban to include all types of headgear. About 20 farmers, who always used to visit after going to the local market, are now boycotting the pub. David Brookes, 46, who runs a dairy farm at Lower Loxley, near Uttoxeter, has been a regular for nearly 20 years and said the rule had made farmers feel like criminals. He added: “The worst that farmers do is have a few drinks and fall asleep in the corner.” Posted by jonjayray on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at 02:09 AM in Oh Tempora, Oh Mores Comments:2

Posted by Fred Scrooby on October 19, 2005, 06:59 PM | # GW, but isn’t that man wearing a baseball cap? It’s been a long time since I was in England—didn’t know baseball caps had caught on over there. I happen to like those flat hats traditionally worn by British farmers. If some head covering’s to be declared taboo why can’t it be those repulsive “doo-rags” the Negroes and Puerto Ricans wear in U.S. cities? I’ve seen enough of those things to last me ten lifetimes: just hideous, nightmarish! What the Negroes and Puerto Ricans who wear them are trying to achieve—if it’s not to horribly degrade their appearance—can’t even be guessed at. Those things make the wearers look subhuman. Is that what they’re trying to achieve? If so, they’ve succeeded probably beyond their wildest dreams. Next entry: Asian culture Previous entry: Securing A Future |

I guess the English need to be more selective about where they drink. Those cosy yet silly little pubs belong to an age and people that are quickly disappearing. As with churches, political parties, employers, community groups, individuals etc; if they don’t stick up for you, then don’t stick up for them.
