The Stealth Amnesty – an updateReaders may recall the original Stealth Amnesty article from last July in which I discussed the Labour Government’s efforts at clearing up the so-called ‘legacy’ backlog of failed asylum seekers whose case files (450,000 of them) were discovered in a warehouse in 2006. Today the House of Commons Home Affairs Select Committee has published a report with an updated status on the disposition of the cases. It seems that around 220,000 have now been resolved as follows: • 30,000 (14%) have been deported • 74,000 (34%) have been given permission to stay • 116,000 cases (52%) have some other conclusion, either a duplicate file, ‘database errors’, or where the applicant is now untraceable. The last category is of course rather suspect and no doubt includes many thousands of failed asylum seekers who have simply disappeared into the woodwork. The 74,000 given permission to stay (even though every one had already earlier exhausted all legal avenues) are the beneficiaries of the Human Rights Act which, if invoked, would preclude their removal on ‘family life’ after having successfully evaded deportation for four or more years. The government’s intention to take just such a line of least resistance was flagged by a leaked departmental memo as recently disclosed in the Daily Telegraph. The category which is perhaps the most baffling is the first, deportations. In cross-checking the UK Border Agency’s claim against the quarterly reports issued by the Home Office which include the official statistics on departures, both voluntary and involuntary, 30,000 amounts to more than 100% of all such removals since mid-2007, when the legacy exercise first commenced. Perhaps what it means is ‘already deported’ but that is not clear one way or the other, and with the present shower in charge it’s always appropriate to suspect sleight of hand. Another curious aspect is that the Committee heard this evidence on November 4th, and embargoed the publication of its report until today. Normally unedited transcripts of oral evidence are posted on the Parliament website within days - news management in action? Maybe I’m just being over-cynical but the committee is chaired by scandal-prone Indo-Yemeni NuLabor apparatchik Keith Vaz.

This sounds like the usual tosh, spiel, spin, distortion from Nu Labour. As soon as you see the name Vaz on the issue, you know it’s just a load of waffling tosh. If they told me the sky was blue, i would have to step out sied to see it with my own eyes.
As a brit married to a foriegn national, i experienced the immigration system, i was not impressed. Lots of unannounced amnesties go on over time. it is well known within the immigrant community & illegals, you stay long enough , eventually you’ll get permenant residence, along with council flat, benefits and a host of other services.
They are simply working at digging themselves out of a hole. Nu Labour fundermentalists will do and say anything to get the party and themselves elected. So they can get their snout in the trough and feel the power of abusing the electorate once again.
They know it is going to be a dirty, tough fight and Nu Labour know how to play dirty, breen doing it for the last 50 years. This is just a part of it, it’ll get worse, as the election draws closer. the closer we get the more outragious the claims.
Nu Labour are aware the majority despise them, they are simply working on apathy, stupidity, laziness, hardcore voters, luck, and working at it to fool people. Let’s hope they fail.
