Terrorism and its link to religion versus our evolutionary past.

A June 29 commentary by Robert A. Pape in the Chicago Tribune discusses the proximate causes of terrorism, but there is also a great deal of research from human ethology, human behavioral ecology, or evolutionary anthropology in the ultimate causes for patriotism and terrorism that results in people willingly sacrificing their lives. (The article follows my comments.)

In 1964, the late ethologist William D. Hamilton laid out the mathematical models with regards to evolutionary strategies for inclusive fitness of kin, tribes, clans and now hypertrophic constructed groups that drive humans to sacrifice themselves for the protection of the group in times of external threat. We saw this vividly during the Second World War when Russian soldiers, under an oppressive government not unlike Saddam Hussein’s, willing fought and died to push back Nazi Germany. Throughout our evolutionary past, humans have become the only real threat to other humans, and loss of control of one’s territory to a threatening outside group, for millions of years, has lead to warfare and human sacrifice for the benefit of the group—to fail to defend one’s territory meant certain death.
