As talks of Turkish accession to EU stall, Erdogan threatens to “let EVERY migrant into Europe”

MailOnline, 25 Nov 2016:

Erdogan: “I’ll let EVERY migrant into Europe.”

The furious Turkish president has vowed to open his country’s borders to all migrants in revenge after the European Parliament voted to halt EU membership talks.

Turkey’s bid to join the EU now looks doomed after the European Parliament demanded that membership talks with Ankara are frozen.

The demand was made amid growing unease over Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ‘increasingly authoritarian regime’ in the country

The EU struck a deal earlier this year to return migrants to Turkey in return for a package including aid for the refugees and accelerated membership talks.

But now Erdogan has declared that if the freeze continues he will open Turkey’s gates for all migrants to flood into Europe.

Speaking at a congress on women’s justice in Istanbul, he said: ‘If you go any further, these border gates will be opened.

It is a travesty that the West did not support the secular coup and that Erdogan and his Islamic regime remain in power in Turkey - now torturing the insurgents..

BBC, “Turkey torture claims in wake of failed coup”, 28 Nov 2016:

Selcen Bayun plays the video on her phone - and takes a deep breath. Even after watching it multiple times since 15 July, it still shocks.

“That’s my client.” she says, pointing to a man with a head injury. “He and the others were beaten, their heads were banged against the wall and he had burns on his legs from being forced to kneel on hot asphalt. I saw a police officer throttling another client during an interrogation.”

The men in the video are high-level suspects behind the attempted coup earlier this year.

They are military officers, accused of commandeering F16 fighter jets to bomb Turkey’s parliament and other official buildings, as well as ordering tanks to fire at protesters in Istanbul and Ankara.

What was perhaps the gravest ever attack on the Turkish state killed at least 265 people and almost overthrew President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

It has led to the biggest purge in Turkey’s modern history, with more than 125,000 people dismissed or suspended and around 40,000 others arrested, charged with links to the Islamic movement of Fethullah Gulen, the cleric who the government says was behind the coup attempt.

Allegations of mistreatment in custody are emerging, and the BBC has heard compelling and worrying testimony.

“They had broken ribs from beatings, cuts to their wrists from being handcuffed behind their backs and fractures to the skull,” says Selcen Bayun.

“With heavy restrictions on the lawyer-client relationship, police and guards sit in on every meeting we have with the client - they even involve themselves in the conversation - and read every letter. Our clients are frightened about saying what they’ve been through.”

The video Selcen plays was released shortly after the coup, with alleged plotters paraded in front of the cameras apparently with broken noses and severe head and ear injuries. Another video posted online, seemingly shot by a policeman, appears to show soldiers kicked and bloodied.

Human rights group Amnesty International recently said it had “credible reports” of detainees being subjected to “beatings and torture, including rape”, while Human Rights Watch documented several cases of alleged abuse, facilitated by a state of emergency that extends police detention from four to 30 days and denies access to a lawyer for up to five days.

The BBC uncovered more testimony of alleged abuse, not just from suspected coup-plotters but from others caught up in the purge accused of “support for terrorism”, including Kurds and leftists.

Kamil Uluc was detained in August, accused of links to the banned Kurdish militant group PKK. He was held at Esenler and Vatan police stations in Istanbul where he claims he was severely tortured.

In a long, detailed account, he told the BBC it started with a gun being put in his mouth to order him what to say, not allowing him a toilet break so he would soil himself - to far worse.

UPI, “ISTANBUL, Turkey, Dec. 31 (UPI)—Turkish officials said at least 39 people were killed and dozens more wounded when gunmen disguised in Santa suits opened fire inside an Istanbul nightclub on New Year’s Eve.”, 31 Dec 2016:

CNN Turk reported the attack took place at a nightclub in the Besiktas neighborhood. The European Pressphoto Agency reported the name of the nightclub as Reina, a popular spot for young people. Images from the scene showed a heavy police presence around the perimeter of the club.

The New York Times reported the club was packed with an estimated 600 patrons when shots rang out around 1:15 a.m. local time.

The state-run Anadula news agency quoted Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin, saying a gunman shot a police officer providing security and another person to gain entry to the club, where civilians were targeted “by spraying bullets on innocent people who were celebrating the New Year.”

Sahin called the incident a “terror attack.”

The Hurriyet Daily News reported club patrons began jumping into the waters of the Bosporus Strait to escape the shooting. The high-end club is a frequent destination for celebrities visiting Istanbul and sits on the shore of the Bosporus, which separates Europe and Asia. The club lies in the heart of a vibrant food and nightclub district frequented by international tourists.

The Times reported Turkish officials had stepped up security efforts surrounding New Year’s Eve celebrations after warnings from U.S. intelligence officials in the days prior that an attack was possible.

The attackers have not been identified and it was unclear how many people were involved in the plot. Initial reports suggested as many as three shooters. It was also not immediately known if they remain at large or were killed by police responding to the incident.
