Shots fired in Munich shopping centre.  Possibly several deaths and injuries.

And the pattern repeats.

“Major police investigation under way Munich ... several dead’ and 10 injured in shooting rampage inside a Munich shopping centre as police hunt gunman ... gunman went on a shooting spree in a shopping centre near Olympic park ... the gunman has reportedly fled the scene via the underground network”

There is a further report of a shootout or possible shooting at Karlsplatz / Stachus.

Update:  The death toll stands at eight and ten injured, several in a critical condition.  A ninth body found a kilometre away, which police think might be that of the shooter.  They say he died violently.  No further details, like ethnicity, available.

BBC News tonight reported that the gunmen may be “far right” on the basis that a single witness named Luan Zequiri claimed that he heard someone, who he says had a gun, cursing foreigners ... and it was also the fifth anniversary of Anders Breveik’s attacks.

The Daily Mail has declared for the usual suspects, stating that witnesses heard the shooter shouting “Allahu Akbar” while firing at kids in MacDonald’s.

Sky News has studied film of a person on a car-park roof.  This, they claim, is the same person as was filmed firing at people outside the shopping centre.  This person shouted that he was German, born locally, and raised on benefits (for which latter he blamed foreigners).  Of course, what that would mean ethnicity- and motivation-wise is far from certain.

Update:  It is now confirmed that the body in the woods is that of the shooter, an 18 year old Iranian born in Germany.  The nine fatalities include young people, and children are among the 16 wounded, three of whom are in critical condition.

The media will now regretfully put aside its story of a far right extremist.  Iranians are Shias while ISIS is a Sunni organisation so perhaps that will provide some small opportunity for musing on a non-religious motivation.  I’m sure they will come up with something.

I wouldn’t bother me if they called him a right winger (if he has religious motives, it would be accurate - he’d be an Iranian rightist inasmuch.) The greater danger is probably in the blurring of lines between Iranians and Europeans.

One of the sane commenters at the Independent actually sat through the night observing the performance of the BBC, and summed up the liberal media problem of squeamishness leading to denialism leading to false propaganda:

It is still too early to reach firm conclusions, but I must say that I found the BBC Radio 5’s coverage through the night very unsatisfactory.  Far-right terrorism was generally the first listed possibility and it was repeatedly stressed that there were no indications of a religious motive. I would have preferred to hear clearly that all options were still on the table and that religious extremism could not be ruled out.

A succession of experts were wheeled out to tell us that Islamic terrorism seemed unlikely and that there was most certainly no connection with the refugee crisis.  Constanze Stelzenmüller (a Brookings Institute fellow and former Die Zeit editor) was interviewed and said it was important to put forward a ‘counter-narrative’ to ‘dog-whistle’ racism. Her whole approach exemplified the triumph of political correctness over intellect. In any event it seemed that the BBC was much more concerned with constructing the counter-narrative rather than investigative journalism and weighing evidence.

I’d say there is a high probability of a religious motive, although there is the puzzle of a young man from a mainly Shia country (5-10% Sunni) doing something that resembles ISIS-inspired violence.  With news management in full swing I doubt that it will be our own MSM that breaks the real story.

According to the German newspaper Das Bild, the deadly Munich shooting that claimed the lives of 10 people and injured 27 was the work of an 18-year-old German citizen of Iranian origin named Ali David Sonboli.

Bild released a video after the shooting, with the loud shouting match between the shooter, who was pacing on the top floor of a nearby parking garage, and Thomas Selby, 57, a truck driver who was looking at him from his balcony.

Selby told Bild: “I was having a beer after work and I heard gunshots. First they were at the McDonalds – boom, boom, boom. Then people were running out of the parking lot. It’s right under my house. I looked from my balcony and saw him reloading his pistol. I threw my beer bottle at him. It broke on the roof.”

Their calls back and forth, including a third person who joined in, were captured on video. The following is a translation from the German transcript:

Neighbor: “You’re a son of a [expletive].”

Shooter: “Because of you I’ve been abused for seven years.”

Neighbor: “You’re a son of a [expletive].”

Shooter: “And now I have to buy a pistol in order to shoot you.”

Neighbor: “A pistol? Go [expletive] yourself.”

Shooter: “I’m German.”

Neighbor: “You’re a son of a [expletive], that’s what you are.”

Shooter: “Stop taking pictures.”

Neighbor: “You son of a [expletive], what are you doing?”

Shooter: “I was born here.”

Third voice: “[Expletive] foreigners.”

Neighbor: “What the hell do you think you’re doing.”

Shooter: “I grew up here in Hartz IV (a welfare neighborhood).”

Neighbor: “You’re a son of a [expletive], you.”

Shooter: “You’re right, you’re right, you’re right.”

Indeed, the DT is blaming far right inspiration - Breivik.

The shooter was an Iranian of Muslim background.

Express, “MUNICH TERROR: Gunman shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ as he shot CHILDREN in McDonald’s
A WITNESS has claimed she heard the gunman who has killed at least nine in a shooting rampage in Munich shout “Allahu Akbar” during the attack,” 23 July 2016

9 people killed; a 15-year-old girl was among the dead, and at least 16 people, including several children, were in hospital; three were in critical condition.

AFP, Munich attack: Gunman planned shooting for a year, did not specifically choose victims, officials say

The 18-year-old German-Iranian gunman who killed nine people in a shooting spree in Munich on Friday began planning the attack one year ago after visiting the site of a 2009 school shooting in south-west Germany that killed 15 people, a Bavarian state official said.
