RT, “Japanese PM ‘outraged’ over 20yo woman’s murder after US Okinawa base contractor arrested”, 20 May 2016:

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he’s outraged at the murder of a 20-year-old woman, following the arrest of a US man on suspicion of homicide in Okinawa. Japanese media later reported that the suspect admitted killing his victim.

“I feel extremely strong outrage,” Abe told reporters.

He added that he has no words “to express, considering how the family” of the victim feels.

“We urge the US side to take thorough measures to prevent the recurrence of such events.”

Kenneth Shinzato, a 32-year-old civil employee of the US military base in Okinawa, and former US Marine, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in the woman’s death. He allegedly admitted that he throttled and stabbed his victim, Kyodo News said, citing sources close to the police investigation.

Sputnik, “U.S. soldiers ruthless as they are protected by U.S. umbrella”, 20 May 2016:

“Within Okinawa they are always protesting US bases, not only for their presence but just the amount of crime constantly surrounding them because of the loophole that says crimes committed by people who flee to the base; those people cannot be turned over to the Japanese authorities until they are invited in.”

[...]

The analyst further said that this was a murder case and the man confessed but there are so many rape cases which do not get coverage and the perpetrators get away with the crime.

The analyst further spoke about why there is such a large presence of military personnel in Okinawa and what the benefits to Tokyo are.

“There are too many people making too much money off it and they are mostly concentrated in Tokyo. So Tokyo doesn’t have to deal with the problems because the US gives Japan a lot of benefits for accepting this base but the benefits go to Tokyo not Okinawa.”

Obama visits Japan amidst protests against crimes committed by troops at military base in Okanawa.

“The issue is containment of China”

The Japanese people want these bases closed, and protests are growing. Will these voices be seriously heard when Obama meets Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on the sidelines of the G7?

Since 1972 there have been 26 cases of murder, 129 cases of rape, 394 cases of burglary, arisen, all conducted by members of the US military or civilian workers, independents working for the US military. It is a point of real consternation, protest and outrage.

The Hill, “Former Marine gets life in prison for rape”, 1 Dec 2017:

Former U.S. Marine Kenneth Franklin Shinzato, 33, was sentenced to life in prison Friday by a Japanese court for raping and murdering a 20-year-old woman in April 2016, The New York Times reported.

Friday’s sentence capped the end of a public trial that enraged many on the island of Okinawa, where some 47,000 U.S. troops are stationed. Shinzato, a Marine from 2007 to 2014, was on the base working as a civilian contractor when he is accused of raping and murdering Rina Shimabukuro and abandoning her body in a village.

The 2016 attack was brought up by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during former President Obama’s trip to the nation last May. Abe demanded that the U.S. prevent similar crimes in a fiery statement to reporters that many saw as uncharacteristic for the well-mannered Japanese leader.

“I am extremely upset. I have no words,” Abe told reporters last May. “I demand that the United States take strict measures to prevent something like this from happening again.”

Crimes committed by American service members around the base at Okinawa have long been a source of tension between the two nations. In 1995, mass anti-U.S. protests erupted on the island after a 12-year-old schoolgirl was raped by three U.S. service members.

Okinawa is home to the largest Marine base outside the U.S. Shinzato worked at Kadena Base, where more than 20,000 U.S. service members and their families, as well as Japanese civilians live and work.

Nigerian national suspected in destruction of gravestones in Osaka, Ehime

EHIME (TR) – Ehime Prefectural Police have arrested a 45-year-old male Nigerian national who is under investigation over the destruction of hundreds of tombstones and religious statues in Ehime and Osaka prefectures, reports Sankei Sports (Aug. 2).

Thus far, police have accused Abraham Emanuel Uba, a resident of Hannan City, Osaka Prefecture, of pushing over one Buddhist statue — valued at around 80,000 yen — at a temple in Saijo City, Ehime at around 5:00 a.m. on July 15.

Police did not divulge whether Uba, who has been accused of inflicting property damage, admits to the allegations. The matter emerged after the priest of the temple consulted with police on the day the damage was discovered.

Police are also investigating whether Uba was behind a similar incident at a temple in Matsushima City, Ehime.

On July 21, about 300 gravestones, some measuring 1.7 meters in height, were found to have been smashed in one location in the Tottori Cemetery in Hannan, Osaka. Also destroyed were six stone Jizo statues, which, according to Buddhist teachings, serve as protectors of children and unborn babies.

On the same day, similar damage was observed at several gravestones at the Jinen Cemetery, located about two kilometers away.

Law enforcement is now investigating whether Uba was behind both incidents in Osaka.

Shinzo Abe: Japan’s PM resigns for health reasons

Japanese PM Shinzo Abe has announced his resignation for health reasons.

He said he did not want his illness to get in the way of decision making, and apologised to the Japanese people for failing to complete his term in office.

The 65-year-old has suffered for many years from ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, but he said his condition had worsened recently.

Last year, he became Japan’s longest serving prime minister. His current period in office began in 2012.

He will remain in his post until a successor is chosen.

Defining Shinzo Abe and his legacy
In 2007 he resigned abruptly from an earlier term as prime minister because of his struggles with ulcerative colitis, a chronic condition that he has lived with since he was a teenager.

Mr Abe has a reputation as a staunch conservative and nationalist, and for stimulating growth with his aggressive economic policy known as “Abenomics”.

He has strengthened Japan’s defences and boosted military spending, but has been unable to revise the constitution’s pacifist Article 9, which bans a standing army for anything other than self-defence.

What did Mr Abe say?

The prime minister said his health started to decline as his ulcerative colitis made a resurgence around the middle of July.

He was now receiving a new treatment for the condition which had to be administered on a regular basis and would not give him enough time to carry out his prime ministerial functions, he added.

He said he could not make any mistakes in terms of important decision making, and therefore had decided to step down.

“I made a judgement I should not continue my job as a prime minister,” he said.

“I would like to sincerely apologise to the people of Japan for leaving my post with one year left in my term of office, and amid the coronavirus woes, while various policies are still in the process of being implemented,” he added, making a bow.

He also expressed regret at not fulfilling his core pledges - forcing North Korea to return Japanese citizens abducted decades ago; sorting out a territorial dispute with Russia; and overhauling the constitution to give more power to the military.
