“Uniquely American, isn’t it?”

Politics and entertainment have collided, only style and glibness emerged alive. For Democratic minority whip Nancy Pelosi one wonders if she can even blink her eyes. On the other hand President Bush is a master of glibness.

The following is a brief exchange during a “town hall meeting” discussing social security. A Mrs. Mornin approached the president identifying herself as a single mother with three children, working three jobs. In this exchange notice how Bush glibly laughs about her plight: his style is that of an itinerant salesman who promises much though, after the sale, quickly leaves town; notice too how he nurses the pathos, arousing sympathy from the audience; another interesting point is the use of the 1st person plural, “we”, as if the world and circumstances of Mary Mornin are like those of the patrician George Bush:

THE PRESIDENT: Mary is with us. Mary Mornin. How are you, Mary?

MS. MORNIN: I’m fine.
