For those in need of intellectual permission, Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” is heavily influenced by one of Plato’s Dialogues.

MA in White Power (University of Central London):

http://www.dtmh.ucl.ac.uk/ma-critical-white-studies/

•Are you frustrated that the discipline you chose to study as an undergraduate has turned out to be dominated by a #whitecurriculum?
•Are you looking for ideas that can help you and your colleagues uncover, understand, and begin to undo the way that whiteness dominates your place of work?
•Are you collaborating with a local, national, or transnational social movement that could be enriched and empowered by engagement with cutting-edge critical thinking about whiteness?

If so, then an MA in White Power could be for you!

Injustice is all around us: From the hierarchies that dominate education, housing, health, and criminal justice, here in Britain, to the massively unequal distribution of wealth and welfare, across the globe. Yet, despite these glaring inequalities, the way in which these hierarchies are racialised is too often a side-thought, merely an optional approach to understanding power in the modern world.

As London (as well as Britain), sees its demographics change, to better-represent the peoples colonised by the British Empire—African, Asian, and African Caribbean people in particular—it is more urgent than ever that we equip ourselves with radical and critical intellectual tools, to uncover the ways in which these hierarchies are indeed racialised and to understand how and why these racialised hierarchies endure.

We need to identify, analyse, and evaluate the intellectual roots of unjust racialised hierarchies, by attending to the way in which they intersect with gendered, classed, sexualised, ability-based, and belief-based structures of power, by attending to the way in which they flout traditional academic disciplinary boundaries, and by attending to the way in which they are inextricably bound up with Empire and its legacies. Empire is and must be our point of departure.

White Power is a fact of life in a range of fields, such as security, immigration, social policy, foreign policy, political economy, community organising, communication studies, public health, activism, education, the arts, sport, human resources, religion or faith, international development, marketing, academia and many more.

Anyone interested in radically reforming our world, in ways that dismantle, rather than reproduce, unjust racialised hierarchies, both within the academy and beyond, will be interested in pursuing this unprecedented postgraduate programme in White Power.

What do we mean by ‘white’?

The MA in White Power will provide the student with a solid grounding in Critical White Studies. It is important to be clear what Critical White Studies is not. Critical White Studies is not about generalising, attacking, or excluding people identified as ‘white’. It is not about theorising what some scholars call ‘white culture’ or ‘white identity’. Critical White Studies is certainly not about adjusting racialised hierarchies, in an attempt to place another racialised category at the top of the hierarchy.

Critical White Studies is about uncovering, understanding, and undoing Power that is channelled through unjust racialised hierarchies. Critical White Studies begins with the racialised category that the intellectual movement who invented race (as we know it today) used to identify themselves. Unsurprisingly, that category is Whiteness—which they placed at the top of the moral and intellectual racialised hierarchy, and which, as a racialised myth, continues to dominate our global society, to this day.

London is the perfect location for engaging in Critical White Studies, not least because the intellectuals who worked here constructed the myth of race and used it to justify, among other things, European imperial invasion and expansion, a competitive project in which Britain, ultimately, came out on top. Yet, Critical White Studies isn’t just about understanding the historical legacies of Empire. It is also about interrogating the accepted truths of traditional texts in our White Dominated canon and about equipping ourselves with radical and critical methodological tools, to dismantle unjust racialised hierarchies and to build a more progressive, less oppressive, more liberatory society.

How does this programme work?

Requirements:
•Applicants must hold a 2:1 in a relevant degree subject, or be able to demonstrate appropriate knowledge or skills
•Applicants must partner with an organisation outside of academia, with which they will work, throughout the duration of the programme, on a practical project

Structure:

The programme will be made up of three core modules, one each term. Students will have the opportunity to choose from a range of optional modules, of which they must choose two (one in the first term, and another in the second term). The third term will involve peer-reviewing workshops, a short, publishable dissertation, and a public, oral presentation.

The programme can be taken part-time, or module-by-module—meaning it can be spread out over one, two, three, or four years. There are also multiple exit routes, so, if a student is unable to finish the programme, they can still leave with a Postgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma.

Content:

Core Module One: Dismantling The Master’s House

This module will take place in the first term, consist of ten weekly lectures, and focus on key concepts, or theoretical tools, for uncovering, understanding, and undoing White Power. Drawing upon the work of Audre Lorde, this module will pay special attention to the way in which White Power is intersectional, thereby enabling students to harness those very tools, to theorise how racialised, gendered, classed, sexualised, ability-based, and belief-based structures of power are mutually reinforcing—in ways that can be oppressive to some, and empowering for others. This module will also involve weekly seminars, in which students will present on, and discuss, the readings and lectures. The module will be assessed on a 3000-word-long essay and an oral presentation.

Core Module Two: Racism’s Administrative Capital

This module will take place in the second term, consist of ten weekly lectures, and focus on cutting-edge work on White Power, across traditional disciplinary boundaries, drawing upon authoritative voices from across the University, and the city, of London. This module will give students the opportunity to learn with leading thinkers from a variety of fields, e.g. Architecture and Planning, Egyptology, Genetics, English Literature, Law, Museum Studies, Education, and Economics. As with the first module, lectures will be accompanied by weekly seminars, in which students will present on, and discuss the topics covered in the readings and lectures. In addition, throughout this term, the students will be required to identify how the key concepts and the cutting-edge work, with which they have begun to engage, relate to the organisations with whom they are working in partnership. This practical project will involve the co-production of knowledge about how White Power operates in the organisation, or in the community with which the organisation works, and about how White Power might be dismantled in that organisation or community. Students will be assessed on five 600-word-long written pieces (e.g. blog posts) responding to the topics covered in the lectures and at least two of these pieces must be in response to their practical project. Students will also be assessed on an oral presentation about their practical project.

Core Module Three: (W)Righting Racialised Wrongs

In this final module, students will be required to write a 6000-word-long dissertation on a topic of their choosing, related to their practical project. Students will receive support with their writing, through structured peer-reviewing workshops during the term. The cohort of students will be charged with the task of co-editing an issue of a UCL open-source online journal, in which each student’s dissertation could, in principle, be published as a polished article. With support from a dissertation supervisor, each student will complete the module by delivering and defending a public, oral presentation of the dissertation, before a panel of academics.

Optional Module: Western Philosophy and White Domination

This optional module has been designed specifically for this programme, and deals both with the ‘canonical authors’ (authors considered to be the most important) in Philosophy, and with the contemporary Critical Philosophy of Race. The first half of the module, “Philosophers Constructing ‘The White Race’”, revisits the canonical authors, to explore how they in fact laid the intellectual foundations of White Power. The second half of the module, “Philosophers Dismantling ‘The White Race’” introduces students to the key debates in which more recent and more critical philosophers have attempted to undermine and undo those canonical foundations. UCL is already the first and only university in Britain to offer undergraduate teaching in the Critical Philosophy of Race. It is, therefore, very well placed to develop Britain’s first and only postgraduate module in the Critical Philosophy of Race.

Good post uKn_Leo. The brazenness and deluge of anti-White politics in academia has reached a crescendo of chutzpah that one could scarcely imagine. How could it be any more bizarre and depraved? but it does.

Merry Christmas all the same, despite the Ebineezers.

Though I have known and enjoyed other Tull albums, particularly Stand-Up and Aqualung, I’ve stumbled upon this forgotten one - Benefit. It’s neat.
