What can be done

I received a circular mail from the Australian National Anarchism activist Welf Herfurth a couple of days ago.  Essentially, he was making an appeal for funds for Andrew Yeoman’s outfit in the Bay Area.  The basis of the appeal was that Andrew’s prodigious energy has been richly rewarded.  But welcome as it is, success and political advancement needs to be funded:

Since he started to get active, Andy’s Bay Area National Anarchists group grew from a few people to the biggest alternative metapolitical group in San Francisco. Here are some of their major achievements in the past few years:

Did Van Jones leave a legacy for European-Americans to profit from?

Van “Well the answer to that is, they’re assholes” Jones has quite a mouth on him.  As the man who brought race to the green agenda with his statements about “white polluters” and “white environmentalists steering poison into the people of color communities,” he didn’t hide his opinions too much.  Thus, in the end, the midnight departure of this supremacist from federal employment.

I hesitate to call him a racist, by the way, because that term has lost all its meaning in both the dominant media culture and the corporate entertainment culture. Besides, anyone who flinches at being called a racist is way behind the times. But the same can’t be said of ...

Supremacist, hypocrite, bigot, divisive

It was clear from his claim that all Euro-Ams are clones of each other and lack diversity, that Jones was a hard-core supremacist. He was, by his own statements, also a bigot and divisive.  His caricature of white Americans pointedly made no reference to nationality (e.g., American) or to continental origins (e.g., Europe).  We happen to know from other sources that to verbally strip blacks of their American nationality and their African origin is regarded by Jones as a wholly bigoted and divisive act.

And he was a liar for saying that school massacres are only carried out by ‘suburban white kids.’

Most of the dominant media culture, a creature controlled by the urban-coastal class, flinched from reporting Jones’ anti-white rhetoric.  Instead, the emphasis was laid on his remarks about Republicans and the 9/11 Truthers.  Reporting of Jones’ racism was suppressed.  That the dominant media culture on TV and in print acted so uniformly (except for the instance of the article referenced above) tells us all we need to know about the media bosses dislike of “whites” roused by black radical rhetoric.  It also tells me that they definitely do not respect RD’s position that denigration and dehumanization of European Americans is not to be tolerated.

But something good may have came out of Jones’ full-on attack on “whites” as a demographic - most probably, some of us woke up to the fact that, for the Obama Administration, we are marked by the color of our skin.

That said, a close reading of Jones’ comments yields something even more useful.  It’s ironic of course, given his racism, but some of his claims we can build on.

Boycotting the 2010 Census

A “small but vocal” group of American Latino radicals has called for a boycott of the US Census unless and until the US government moves forward with federal legislation to legalize all the illegal aliens in the USA.

A small but vocal group of advocates is urging illegal immigrants and their supporters nationwide to boycott the 2010 Census to protest the government’s inaction on immigration legislation, a move that, if successful, could cost Massachusetts and other states millions of dollars.

The campaign is setting off alarms across the United States because census figures are crucial to determining how much federal funding cities and towns receive. A large-scale boycott, state officials and prominent pro-immigrant groups warn, could force Massachusetts to cut services from school lunch programs to highway construction, and heighten its chances of losing a seat in Congress.

... Participation in the census is required by law every 10 years so the government can obtain an accurate count of every resident in the United States. But the fine for failure to register is only $100, and the Census Bureau has generally not pursued violators.

... proponents of a boycott say it is a chance to grab the attention of politicians who have failed to pass legislation addressing illegal immigrants, even as their numbers have swelled to 12 million nationwide and 190,000 in Massachusetts - or about 1 in 5 immigrants. Overall, 14 percent of the state’s population is foreign born; most are here legally.

I don’t see any reason why European Americans shouldn’t just attach themselves to this boycott proposal.  My reasoning is that the federal government would have a hard time convicting us of a federal violation without going after the American Latinos leading the fight.

Here are some possible grounds for a boycott.  Obviously anything like this would have to have support from a significant number of Euro-Am activists who would pick & choose the most appropriate grounds.

Suggestions:

1.  We will boycott without clear & convincing legislation & appropriations for completing the wall along the southern border, for verifying every applicant for every job in the USA, and for commencing a sweep of illegal immigrants before January 2010, in order to protect job opportunities for the diverse white American peoples.

2.  We will boycott unless the 2010 census offers opportunity to European Americans to express their national origin, continental origin, and ethnicity on the face of the census form, to let the USA know about the depth and richness of our internal diversity.

3.  We will boycott the 2010 census unless the federal government offers clear & convincing commitments to fund local programs governed by members of the diverse white American peoples to rescue young white boys and girls from the three principal social ills in which they are over-represented— binge drinking, meth use, and tobacco smoking.  The federal government has utterly failed young Euro-Am kids.

Well, that’s a start.

White and heard

A disturbing meme was recently re-introduced to the debate on the future of our people by Prof Kevin MacDonald.  A hero to many among the diverse white American peoples, he claimed that we lack the capacity or opportunity to make our case for a particular white political or social identity.  His statement was dated 8/20/09 and appeared on The Occidental Observer in an essay titled, Fundraising Appeal: Why support The Occidental Observer.

Western societies have become cauldrons of competing ethnic groups where only one group — White people of European descent — cannot be heard. Where only one group cannot even articulate its interests. Where only one group seems to think that self-destruction and abdication of political power are moral imperatives.

Whilst it is true that The Occidental Observer has done a good job and earned its financial support from European Americans or Euro-Americans, not every syllable Prof MacDonald or The Occidental Observer is helpful or even true.  The above three-sentence statement is a case in point.  There are so many errors and flawed assumptions in it that unpacking the statement is no easy matter.  But it’s not impossible.

The English Defence League march in Birmingham, 4th July 2009

This is an outgrowth of the Luton anti-Islamist protest from two months back - itself a result of the al Muhajiroun protest in Luton during the homecoming parade of the Royal Anglian Regiment in March.

Snappy Refutations - Exercise 8

These are getting harder to find now.  But ... late last night a man named Michael Keith, who is a director of the execrable Centre for Migration Policy and Society (COMPAS for short), posted his first journalistic offering online at the Guardian.  It is temptingly titled Don’t leave migration policy to the BNP.

The usual mud-wrestling proceeded.  But in the course of it a southern European gentleman going under the soubriquet of JorgeG offered an argument which I paraphrase thus:-

The English can emigrate wherever they please, and have done so in their millions over the centuries, ‘race-replacing’ not just cities but whole continents, eg. North America, Oceania.  But Jonny Foreigner is not welcome here.

So, does one defend the right of the intelligent to prosper wherever they please, including their own homeland of course?  Does one argue that native-Amercians, Aboriginal Australians, Maoris, etc had a natural right to resist, very often did so but lost, and we have a natural right to resist also?  Does one take the judo option that race-replacement is not morally sustainable under any circumstances?

Snappy Refutations, Exercise 7

Here’s an interesting one, again from the Guardian - a recent thread on homosexual marriage.  Some bright spark objected to the appeal to Nature used by a supporter of traditional marriage.  He said:-

“Define Nature for me and I’ll cede your point.”

Define Nature?  Can’t be too difficult, surely.

Snappy Refutations, Exercise 6

In between doing other things, I’ve been debating for a couple of days with a Guardian liberal of a scientific bent here.  He came up with the following definitons of the dreaded r-thing, claiming that I qualify on both counts.

They are:-

1. The belief that certain races are superior/inferior to others.

2. The belief that people’s race is more significant than their individuality.

Now, I answered this person in the least snappy way I could, putting both racial superiority and Man as individual and tribalist into their proper contexts.  But I can’t say that it worked any better than a well-chosen, sharp riposte could have.

So what should I have said?  Is there even such a thing as “evil racism”?  Or is it all just a handy exaggeration, a silencer and an ethnic smear?

I’ve noticed that the Guardianistas are clueing up on the availability of DNA testing, and are endeavouring to use it as a challenge to the argument that my succession of thread phenotypes at CiF are members of a genetically distinct European people.  As tactics go, it’s a smear really, the unspoken inference being that somewhere lurking in my ancestral history are a whole stack of Somalis and Afghans.  And it’s a variation on the old tactic of claiming that our people don’t exist or can’t be defined, and so there’s nothing to preserve.

Of course, it could just be that the folks who use this tactic are mixed-race self-haters.  Anyway, it goes like this:-

Go and take a DNA test then publish the result here so we can all see if you are as English as you think you are.

Another version concentrates on genealogy instead of the DNA test, but the inference is the same.  You are invited to snap back.

By the way, a couple of days ago I constructed a comment out of material in the second and third threads of this series, and it was bloody good.  Too bloody good for the CiF moderators, in fact.  It got deleted.  But it shows that this exercise is worth doing, and my thanks go to PF who thought of it.

The Judenfrei Jew Review

The Judenfrei Jew Review (www.judenfrei.org) is a new website aiming to expose the Jewish crime network and set the stage for the expulsion of Jews from the United States of America as well as other Western societies. I’m involved with this site, so you know it’s going to be good. It’s in beta version presently, but readable.

Why Judenfrei?

The trigger for setting up judenfrei was the brutal assault on Palestinians by Jews two months ago, over rocket attacks that never were. Sickening as the massacre was, I have run into people pleased with the assault in the sense that the Jews have exposed their criminal nature to a lot of people in a short amount of time. It was another reminder or rather a jolt that Jews won’t stop with their criminal agenda. They have to be stopped by us.

Another reason for setting up judenfrei was that I was getting bad vibes from John Alan Martinson Jr. and crew at Jewish Crime Network International News (http://www.jewishcrimenetwork.com). Their enthusiasm and quality was going down rapidly, and some of the original members were hardly posting. So it was necessary to come up with judenfrei, and while judenfrei was being worked on, Martinson Jr. shut down JCN International News because of lack of support, financial or otherwise. What a shame!

Why a website dedicated to the Jewish problem?

MR is much broader in scope than judenfrei and has a lot of excellent content on issues other than Jews. Including judenfrei’s content here as is would risk having MR shut down, even if some words and cartoons that offend Jewish sensibilities were removed. Compromising in this manner only to have MR shut down isn’t worth it, and people who behave like the Jewish community does shouldn’t have their sensibilities spared.

Being shut down, on the other hand, will be natural for judenfrei, but it’ll be back as soon as the website is set up at a new server and DNS propagation is completed. The same could be done for MR, but I’ll save Guessedworker the trouble.

What’s different about judenfrei.org?

Judenfrei joins many websites, authors and groups in addressing the Jewish Question. The arguments at judenfrei are different in some details from other exposés of Jews, but essentially similar to those of wise men on Jews throughout the ages ... because Jewish behavior has largely remained the same. By the time judenfrei gets out of beta mode, it will differ from similar websites in being more accessible and having superior structural/logical organization of information on Jews.

Coming a long way

When I started commenting at MR, I came across as philo-Semitic (philo-Jew to be more precise), and was accused of being a Richardberg. Eventually I became the most ‘anti-Semitic’ blogger at MR, also exceeding the commentators at MR. Long ago, I left Fred ‘blame it on the Jews’ Scrooby in the dust. What prompted this change?

I have explained my awakening at judenfrei, and to make a long story short, the main events that made me seriously examine Jews were near-simultaneous realizations that the Holocaust is a hoax and that Jews did 9/11.

There was a time when I preferred to use Zionists instead of Jews to address criminal Jews. I was hoping to use a word that doesn’t suggest that all Jews are to blame or are culpable. I persisted even when it became clear that most Jews are Zionist. Eventually I dropped references to Zionists as it became clearer that whereas Jewish criminals have been known by many names through the ages – Pharisees, Christ killers, Khazars or Cozars, Usurers, Bolshevists, Communists, International Bankers, Zionists, etc. – they have been members of a criminal community all along that today calls its members Jews. Their behavior has hardly changed; before Zionism was established, Jewish money changers weren’t doing anything fundamentally different from modern Jewish international bankers’ behaviors. And, many crimes committed by Jews are not related to Zionism.

For lack of an alternative, referring to criminal Jews as Jews is appropriate, and no reasonable person should take it as suggesting that all Jews are being blamed or held culpable.

Street-Fighting, Forum-Fighting, And Reporter-Fighting Discourse

At Resisting Defamation, we have been mystified by the tendency in many awakening Euro-Americans to use hateful language about other demographics, to indulge in uniforms or dead dictators, or to become centered on other demographics without understanding that the development of a defensive white-centric political identity is our key need.

Some Euro-Americans have fallen into the trap of believing that their anger and their new understandings are an appropriate basis for their message.  That is, they believe that their anger at African-Americans is an appropriate emotional context to use to convey statements about African-Americans.  But only very rare is revealing your personal insights or emotional responses the best line to use to accomplish change in society or among the diverse white American peoples.

Examples From Other Demographics

Consider some examples. If you ask Jews how they justify violent ethnic cleansing in south-west Asia, they will usually quietly claim that they are merely reclaiming the territory God gave their ancestors.  It’s so breath-takingly dishonest that it stuns reality-based hearers and leaves little room for counter-response.  They win.

How to destroy the Jewish crime network: the shekels factor (draft)

The picture shows a man’s brain being blown out by assassins. The victim was John Fitzgerald Kennedy, then President of the United States. Who decided to express their gratitude in this manner? Let’s see. JFK was opposed to Israel developing nuclear weapons, reissued Lincoln’s greenbacks – a form of government-issued money – and signed an executive order giving the government the ability to print its own, debt-free money, without involving the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is the American central bank – a Jew-owned front for private banks – that creates money out of nothing, then loans it to the government, with interest, and also prints the paper currency of the U.S., the total dollar value of which is a small fraction of the fake money generated by the Jewish bankers. There’s nothing ‘Federal’ about this bank, and it has no reserves.

If the President of the United States couldn’t undermine the Jewish crime network, what chances do we ordinary mortals have? We cannot, as individuals, abolish the Federal Reserve or stop loot going to Israel. If we form organizations to tackle these problems, Jews or their proxies will infiltrate them, try to find the moral weaknesses of its members in order to blackmail them into ineffectiveness, and give the more important members the JFK treatment. A bleak picture? Not at all! There are lots of things we can do. The purpose of this draft is specifically to list what we can do as individuals to destroy the Jewish crime network.

It’s one thing to expose the Jewish crime network, another to destroy it. Mere exposure is insufficient. There are lots of behaviors that on the part of individuals will typically have an insignificant impact on the Jewish crime network, but the collective impact of millions will destroy this crime network. Many of these behaviors won’t bother the sheeple because while indulging in them, they’ll almost never individually come to the attention of the criminal Jews.

The recommendations in this draft expand upon the suggestions of Eric Hufschmid. They typically involve inconveniencing ourselves, though to a minor extent, and I hope to have better success than Hufschmid because I’ve taken pains to minimize the inconvenience. I would’ve liked to post a more complete essay, but the need of the hour is action, now, and this draft can be completed later and in a better manner if we indulge in some collective brainstorming.

Collective Wisdom

The following is a “meat and potatoes” type of list illustrating some basic concepts and counterpoints to arguments we commonly see.

We’ve all had experiences linguistically dueling with others, so, by all means, add your own talking points to the list.

1. Don‘t waste your time converting atheists.

It has been said that C.S. Lewis’s classic Christian Apologetic, ‘Mere Christianity’ never converted a true atheist but convinced a multitude of agnostics to finally come off of the fence into the believer’s camp. In regards to the issues surrounding race there are similar divisions of people. Those being, True Believes (us), Racial Agnostics and Racial Atheists.  And as with Lewis’s work being most effective at moving the agnostics, likewise we should concentrate our efforts and arguments towards the Racial Agnostics instead of Racial Atheists, who are likely to reject Racialism no matter how compelling the facts presented.

You can generally distinguish between the two through basic conversation.

2. Basic facts.

Most people have no idea about the demographic predicament the White race is in. So tell them that Whites today are in fact no more than around 13% of the world’s population and dropping fast. And what that means is that minorities (non-Whites) are nearly 90% of the worlds population and growing.  Who is the minority here?

Now if they reply with, “Yeah but non-Whites are a minority in The West (or specific countries therein),” you can point out that that argument is simply compartmentalizing the issue.  Two can play that game.  Blacks are a minority in the United States … yeah, and ... Whites are a minority in the Americas.  Hispanics are a minority in America …. yeah, and … Whites are a minority in Chicago, New York, etc …

And often along the same lines we hear that, “It’s an ever-changing world.”

Well, no.  New Technological toys aside, large swaths of Africa, Asia, Latin America and the middle-east (where the majority of humans live) have seen very little to no change in the last one hundred years (or more).  Only in The West is the ever-changing world, ever-changing.  Other areas have been able to integrate new technologies into theirsocieties without much alteration to their day-to-day lives.

Fighting their discourse with ours

One of the difficulties that we have in face-to-face encounters, when we find ourselves under verbal attack, is to be ready with a reasonable strategy. This essay is to address this situation and to provide tools to you to respond effectively.

REJECT MEMES & THEMES TELLING YOU HOW TO THINK

Watch out for the various memes and themes that float through the Internet intended to guide your thinking. One theme is quite famous, and it laments that “when you call me white boy, I can’t call you black boy, because then you’ll call me a racist.” Any time you read an essay that implicitly or explicitly tells you that you cannot answer back for any reason is a fraud, floated by our demographic adversaries to help silence us. You will see that meme frequently, and it can usually be summed up by saying, “I’ve been silenced, there is no way to break into the sphere of propaganda that surrounds me and drowns us.” It’s designed for you to incorporate it into your own thinking.

REJECT MODELING PROPAGANDA TELLING YOU HOW TO ACT

“Modeling” is a verbal or written phrase or sentence meant to be implanted into your mind to tell you how to conduct yourself in a variety of situations. You see a modeling exercise any time you read a news story about the white victim of a hate crime forgiving the perpetrator—it’s just to plant an idea in our minds about how to act in difficult situations. Same goes for many sit-com plots and characters. They’re played out the way they are in order to teach us how to act. Modeling is a very powerful tool that our adversaries have mastered and which the diverse white American peoples are mostly completely unaware of. Now that you know its name, you’ll notice modeling all over the Internet.

STUDYING TECHNIQUES

It is also important to realize that many of our adversaries, especially the ones who seem extremely skilled with the put-down, the short unanswerable phrase, and the cutting shut-up line, study their phrases and lines of argument in college club meetings, ethnic media conferences, consciousness-raising events, and a variety of other events that seem innocent on the surface, but are really nasty little schools for teaching our adversaries how to talk in rapid-fire face-to-face encounters to humiliate us.

DON’T DO NAME-CALLING YOURSELF

Never respond to name-calling with name-calling for two reasons. First, it is important that you never be quoted as using slurs or negative stereotypes in future events. Second, it is completely unnecessary and definitely not part of our diverse white American cultures to do so.

WINNING THE IMPLICIT CONTEST COUNTS

Distinguish in your own mind between winning a rapid-fire face-to-face encounter, on the one hand, and laying out all the facts and history you can, on the other hand, to defeat an attack. If Americans of European origins have a fault, it is to take the insults and derogatory statements on the level of an explicit serious public discourse. Not at all, they are all about winning and humiliating European Americans in the discussion. At Resisting Defamation, we have been frequently surprised by people failing to understand that our online syllabus is a toolbox, rather than a history of the world and the role of European Americans therein. This confusion is understandable because almost all commenters on the dire situation confronting our demographic respond with “global analyses” meaning lengthy web sites that really get into history, culture, who invented what, white contributions, etc. A global analysis is good and interesting, but it is not a toolbox of techniquesto win the implicit battle. European and American histories and cultures can be used as tools, however.

Taking RD to our people

MR readers will be aware of the work our organisation, ResistingDefamation.org, undertakes and the strategies we employ to combat the flow of routine media slurring and negative depiction of white Americans.

White boy, white privilege, wasp, nerdy, white flight, redneck, hillbilly, cracker, white trash, geek, white bread, lily-white, typical white person, goober, Yankee dog, white resentment, acting white, and Wonder Bread hardly scratch the surface.  But this is a surface beneath which lurks a deep and arrogant hostility and a moral supremacism that we are absolutely determined to scratch.

To that end, and as has been pretty widely discussed elsewhere, we launched a counter-action this month with a full-page ad in a major print medium in Santa Clara County (the fifth largest industrial county in the USA).

Metro is a free weekly advertiser, but enormously popular and widely distributed. It’s distribution is second only to the San Jose Mercury News which has, itself, almost become a thinner tabloid.

The ad, which was headlined A river of sludge from the San Jose Mercury News, offered white American Metro readers the chance to get a handle on the problem:-

At ResistingDefamation, we believe that a slur-free society is possible, and we have established free two-hour seminars to teach about this river of sludge and how to combat it.

Well, over 220 email responses have followed.  So we are sorting them and setting up 27 sessions to service demand!  We’ll have desktop computers, an after-hours cop, and up to 10 people present at each seminar.  We’ll cover negative stereotypes and slurs first and in that order, then 90 mins of discussion, etc.  The seminars start this week.  They have excited a good deal of comment, but not in the daily newspaper.

The ad will be re-tooled and re-run every month until Christmas.

We did send the actual page from the hard-copy edition to the eighteen top corporate officers in Colorado so they know about it.  And we complained to the county Board of Supervisors about our having to do this when they have an Office of Human Relations which is supposed to do these things.

Not that we don’t think we can’t do a far better job.

Humour as a Weapon

I wouldn’t normally run two pieces sent to me by Welf Herfurth in quite such proximity.  But this one by Andreas Faust, a Tasmanian writer of the New Right, gave me a good laugh, and reminded me that political activism is often most effective when it is most irreverent.

This article has been researched and compiled for the purposes of educating New Right and N-A activists in the use of humour as a political weapon. There is a paranoid feeling amongst many on the New Right that the mass media is our greatest enemy. Not so. This article looks at the ways in which activists can use and manipulate the media, rather than the other way around.

As an example: mention the 1932 opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to any older Australian, and the first image that will spring to their mind is a man on horseback, galloping forward to slash the ribbon with his sword, before the ‘official’ representative could get to it. The swordsman was a member of a political group called the New Guard. And while this stunt was not especially humorous, it was certainly eye-catching – it remains in the mass mind to this day. In that same city in 2007, the crew of television show The Chaser made world headlines when they infiltrated the APEC forum (one of them dressed as Osama bin Laden), making a complete mockery of the forum’s expensive security measures.

In general, the media doesn’t give coverage to alternative politics (the recent 9/11 Truth Forum in Sydney was completely ignored, even though one of the speakers was a prominent Japanese MP). But ‘fringe’ views can get past the editors if they are presented by means of some humorous prank or stunt. Humour equals saleability...it’s as simple as that. People like to laugh, and the editors know it. For the mass media, the dollar is the bottom line...and the skilled prankster can actually make this work in his or her favour. A prankster called Mark Pauline claimed that “the media can never deny coverage to a good spectacle. No matter how ridiculous, absurd, insane or illogical something is, if it achieves a certain identity as a spectacle, the media has to deal with it.” In other words, instead of letting the mainstream media pigeonhole and stereotype them, activists using humour and spectacle can turn this around and actually use the media.

People Before Profits - the May Day March in Melbourne

The global May Day events by workers the world over stand for the rights of the people to determine their own destiny as workers or students, it also stands against Corporations and Government standing over working families struggling to make a living. To demonstrate our support for a fair go for Australian workers, some local National-Anarchists decided to mobilise in the Melbourne CBD and join the planned march.

We had discussed our aims and tactics a week or so previous to the date of action and comrades were designated tasks. Our banner was designed and made with the help of a local fabric business and read “People Before Profits,” the people are more than worker bee’s or economic beings, we have an identity and spirit much deeper than our careers or petty consumerism.

Once the day arrived, we met at a designated location with time before the march to discuss in more detail what our “plan of action” would be. The conversation became more casual as we waited for the neo-Communist and Unionist groups to begin their march from Trades Hall. Our main goal was to make a presence representing National-Anarchist ideas in support of struggling working folk, our secondary aim fell in line with the Strategy of Tension; showing the traditional Left that they no longer had a monopoly on their sacred May Day and we have as much a right as they do to march.

The Tyranny of Individualism in a Liberal Democratic Society

1. Introduction

This is an article divided up, roughly, into two halves. The first concerns liberalism, or what liberalism has become. It details a transition in liberalism – from a cult of elections and parliaments, to a cult of doing your own thing (even if that involves sexual and other debauchery). The second half outlines what I consider to be the New Right antidote to the poison of modern liberalism, and explores some of the ideas of a liberal democratic anti-intellectual, Karl Löwenstein, who, in 1937, wrote a paper describing some of the political techniques used by the fascist political movements of the time. Some of those techniques are still being used by nationalists around the world (Hungary, Sweden, Russia, Britain, etc.), and, in my opinion, we in Australia can apply them equally as successfully here.

2. What is liberalism really?

Nowadays, one can read, in the Western liberal democratic press, daily denunciations of General Musharaff of Pakistan and the Burmese Junta. The two dictatorships have attracted media attention recently because of their flagrant crackdowns on ‘liberal democratic’ political opponents (or at least, opponents who the Western media assumes are liberal democratic).

Now and then, other dictatorships and/or authoritarian regimes will occupy the spotlight. One recent case is Georgia, which is led by an American-backed liberal democrat, Mikhail Saakashvili, who came to power through an ‘Orange Revolution’-type coup (nicknamed the ‘Rose Revolution’) in 2003, but is now in danger of being overthrown, and now, as a result, has declared a state of emergency and is using state repression – including tear gas and rubber bullets – to subdue the populace.

A perennial target of the Western media is Vladimir Putin. Despite his massive support among the Russian people, and massive election results in his favor, the Western media still considers him to be ‘undemocratic’ and ‘illiberal’, and upholds his critics – small groups of ‘liberal democratic’ dissidents, who have no popular support, and no agenda beyond being anti-Putin – as being more ‘democratic’, and certainly more morally worthy.

So we have a collection of countries – Burma, Pakistan, Fiji, Russia and others – which are manifestly illiberal and democratic in the eyes of Western liberal democrats. But what is it, exactly, that makes our liberal democracies so good? Why are they preferable to these dictatorships and authoritarian regimes? The answer is, simply, that people in liberal democracies are ‘more free’ – in fact, they are ‘free to do their own thing’.
