Anti-immigrant Riot in Russia Some pictures and footage of an anti-immigrant riot in Russia that aren’t covered in their MSM are, of course, making the rounds of some blogs. There is increasing use of broadband in Russia so it will be more than the employer class, let alone oligarch class, that will see this. This riot is in the small city of Kondopoga, in Russian (East) Karelia. (Karelia is a historically ethnically Finnish area subject to border disputes with Scandinavian states such as Sweden but almost all residents of Kondopoga are Russian.) Comments:2

Posted by Joe on Mon, 04 Sep 2006 17:50 | # White race riots are highly effective. Didn’t you read the article? The local goevernment has agreed to shut down chechen owned businesses and no doubt the chechens will be leaving the area. If we Americans had the balls to riot back in the sixties against the blacks(and the police), we might not be in such bad shape today. 4

Posted by Alexei on Mon, 04 Sep 2006 18:04 | # In the short run, the Chechens are out. But will they return? The pro-Kremlin Chechen president, Ramzan Kadyrov, is calling on Moscow to use force, and a Moscow journalist (an attractive redhead lady, BTW) has suggested that Kadyrov’s cutthroats be flown to Karelia to deal with the unruly Russians. In the long run, rioting is counterproductive. It plays into the hands of the establishment. 6
Posted by Alexei on Mon, 04 Sep 2006 21:48 | # Sorry to be a pain—I’ve just noticed the corrections you made to the entry, and I rather doubt that many in Kondopoga speak Karelian or Finnish. Ethnic Karelians and Finns make up only 14% of Karelia’s residents, and not all of them speak their ancestral languages. However, some Russians living in contact with ethnicities they see as more westernized, and therefore more advanced than themselves, sometimes refer to themselves as members of those ethnic groups. 7
Posted by James Bowery on Mon, 04 Sep 2006 22:25 | # I understand this area is sensitive, and that the Karelians have a lot more relationship to the Russians than the “Caucasians” so I’m not trying to drive a wedge here. I’m just trying to put the “immigration” issue into the proper framework. The Karelians are a bit like the Scots in their historic native tongue and periodic quest for independence. I’ll say “historically Finnish”. The terms are difficult to get right. 8

First, Kondopoga was only occupied by Finland during WWII. It has never been part of Finland or Sweden AFAIK. The Wiki article on Karelia has a link to Finland’s pre-WWII borders.
Second, I wrote briefly on the accidents on my blog, here.
