Grandfathers. Great-grandfathers. My father, an Englishmen, served in 1944 as a Flight Lieutenant and pilot with 75 Squadron Royal New Zealand Airforce. My grandfather was a medical orderly in the Gallipoli Campaign of April-December 1915. Through these tenuous links I claim some small interest in ...

(or was it you drumming up traffic?) doesnotexist April 25, 2007 2:01 PM Certainly there was a doctrinaire element to anthropology when I studied it three decades ago (I remember the principle that “all social events have social causes” being presented as beyond challenge), and evolutionary perspectives in particular have a lot to offer. But, as the Jenkins blog also showed, this debate does tend to bring some pretty odious characters out of the woodwork - just google “Guessedworker” and you’ll get a taste of the far right racist demi-monde. 4

Thanks for the Guardian link; it was the usual pseudo-science, from the ‘social’ sciences. Guessedworker, my relatives have died as Australians in WW1 & WW2 and fought in The Boer War, WW1 (for which my Great grandfather was awarded an OBE) and WW2. My father was called up for Vietnam, but was never required to fight.. I really appreciate your post. 7

ANZAC Day has already begun here (5.30am). Dawn Parades and Services everywhere. I have watched the celebrations on this day get bigger and bigger. Nothing is open until 1pm and it is a national holiday in NZ. Australian and New Zealand parades are marvellous, they take hours - bands, regiments, Scouts, returned soldiers, nurses, all march. It is very moving.
Yesterday morning on Radio Pacific heard an interview with Vera Lynn by telephone. She is 90 and still gracious and well spoken - she even sang a line of song.
The build-up to ANZAC Day takes place over the previous week.
My father flew with NZ’s only dive bomber squadron. He trained in Canada and returned to NZ on the Achilles.
