Grandfathers. Great-grandfathers.
My father, an Englishmen, served in 1944 as a Flight Lieutenant and pilot with 75 Squadron Royal New Zealand Airforce. My grandfather was a medical orderly in the Gallipoli Campaign of April-December 1915. Through these tenuous links I claim some small interest in ...

ANZAC Day has already begun here (5.30am). Dawn Parades and Services everywhere. I have watched the celebrations on this day get bigger and bigger. Nothing is open until 1pm and it is a national holiday in NZ. Australian and New Zealand parades are marvellous, they take hours - bands, regiments, Scouts, returned soldiers, nurses, all march. It is very moving.
Yesterday morning on Radio Pacific heard an interview with Vera Lynn by telephone. She is 90 and still gracious and well spoken - she even sang a line of song.
The build-up to ANZAC Day takes place over the previous week.
My father flew with NZ’s only dive bomber squadron. He trained in Canada and returned to NZ on the Achilles.
