Cultists flummox journo It was too much even for the journalist from the Melbourne Age:
Confused? Well, yes. Were the Vietnamese choir and African dancers supposed to represent Victoria or Scotland or something else altogether? And what if Tanzania and Vietnam were to sign such an agreement. Would they mark the occasion with a bagpipe rendition of Waltzing Matilda? Comments:2
Posted by Guessedworker on Fri, 17 Mar 2006 10:31 | # From the link: Scotland’s First Minister, Jack McConnell, says Victoria’s multicultural reputation is the reason that the state is such an attractive option with which to forge a formal alliance. Mr McConnell said Scotland, which won self-government in 1999, was trying to turn around its brain drain and incorporate Victorian initiatives to entice migrants. Since devolution particularly, there has been a noticeable emphasis on nation-building in Scottish politics (as opposed to re-building, perhaps). As ever, the driving forces are those conjoined twins, the two Es, economicm and egalitarianism. This BBC News piece from 2002 explains the demographic fears of Scotland’s “big noises” well enough. They see a record low birth-rate and an ageing population, to which is added an extra Scots twist in the long tradition of exporting human capital. Well, what poltiician wants to preside over the economic scleroris of his nation. To an egalitarian an influx of third world “brains” is a magic pill. Cue vibrant young African dancers. To an advocate of economism advancing prosperity is the ultimate value, and that its guarantor is GDP growth. Cue vibrant young African dancers again. The only way to save Scotland from death by, say, 2060 to, at latest, 2100 is to stop voting for egalitarians and economism advocates now. Post a comment:

The Scottish First Minister, an enthusiastic social-Marxist called Jack McConnell, loves his overseas trips. He is, however, a person of very limited intellectual maturity and has probably never heard of his fellow Scot, Lachlan Macquarie, whose surname adorns more listed companies and features of Australia’s heritage than any other.
McConnell loves Third World immigration, but of course if some small backward country like Nepal was suddenly inundated with Westerners seeking to replace the indigenous populace and promote their own economic interests, he would be the first to shout ‘Neo-Colonialism’ and call for a cessation of immigration.
