Silk Road News: First demonstration cargo train departs London for Yiwu, China.

A peaceful day in Clock Town

As of 11 Apr 2017, the train is moving with 32 containers. Assuming that everything goes well, the train should arrive at Yiwu in 18 days.

There is of course a geostrategic element behind each of these developments as well.

As Xinhua wrote about a particular section of the initiative last year:

Xinhua, ‘First train from China to Iran stimulates Silk Road revival’, 16 Feb 2016 (emphasis added):

[...]

The train, also referred to as Silk Road train, has passed through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Iran, travelling a distance of 10,399 kilometers. [...]

The travel of cargo train from China to Iran is part of a Chinese initiative to revive the ancient Silk Road used by the traders to commute between Europe and East Asia.

Tehran will not be the final destination of these kinds of trains from China, the Iranian deputy minister said, adding that in the future, the train will reach Europe.

This will benefit Iran as the transit course for the cargo trains from the east Asia to Europe, he said.

Chinese ambassador to Iran Pang Sen told Xinhua that as one of the cooperation projects after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Iran, the cargo train is playing a important role to promote construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative.

And cargo trains reaching Europe is precisely what is happening.

It’s very nice.

But there’s a problem

The shadow cast over all of these kinds of proceedings, is that there is an ongoing background problem where the Trump administration and the Israelis are constantly trying to disrupt everything for their own reasons which revolve around Zionist strategic imperatives.

The phenomenon of Zionist strategic imperatives—such as the Zionist opposition to the Iran deal, or the Zionist desire to hand Syria over to Al-Qaeda—finding their expression through American foreign policy, is a phenomenon that is a real problem, and it is a problem that will have to be combated with more determination than ever if we are going to secure post-Brexit prosperity for Britain as well as economic growth in Asia.

Our time is limited. The American Zionist problem needs to be fixed before 2060, otherwise it might merge with the next migration problem and then something truly horrible and completely unmanageable will happen.

Do not become despondent. The situation is extremely dangerous, but as long as you understand the problem then it means there is a possibility that you can solve the problem. It is possible to defeat the American Zionist agenda. The tools do exist for accomplishing that, and they have always existed.

You have to believe in your strengths.

The symbolism is there and all very interesting, and the geopolitics too.  But is this a commercially viable project?  OK, container shipment by sea takes pretty well twice as long as the rail journey is scheduled to.  But, obviously, most sea freight today is not as time-sensitive as it is cost-sensitive.  Really urgent freight travels by air. Most high security freight likewise.  I am not sure what kind of regular, high-volume freight falls into the Goldilocks zone.

I guess it could be OK, doc, if they can trade up to a bullet train, and run the whole 5,000 miles non-stop in 24 hours.

Dr. Eigenvector: “We should never trust The Silk Road to go that route. I don’t care how many dago grease-ball guinea-wop cumbads come out of the woodwork!”

Corleone Representative: “I’m German/Irish”

Dr. Eigenvector: “Well let me tell you something my kraut-mcfriend!”...

Corleone Representative: “I have a special practice, I handle The Silk Roaders.”

ROME, May 22 (Xinhua)—A cultural program called Silk Road Stories made its debut on board the Majestic Princess, a new cruise ship that is making its maiden global voyage from Rome to east China’s Xiamen City.

The opening ceremony for the program, which introduces Western passengers to Chinese culture, art, dance, food, and more, took place Sunday on board the gigantic 19-storey vessel, which measures 224 feet in height and 1,083 feet in length.

The program points to deepening Sino-Italian relations, said Chinese embassy’s charge d’affaires Zheng Xuan at the ceremony.

Bilateral relations hit a fast track after a state visit to China by Italian President Sergio Mattarella in February, she said.

That was followed by Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni’s visit earlier this month, when he attended the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing.

Zheng said the program is a creative way to enhance trust and communication between peoples along the contemporary Silk Road.

It is also a good example of the development of the relationship between China and Italy, injecting new energy into the people-to-people exchanges within the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, she added.

As the massive vessel set sail, a group of 24 Chinese children performed a unique folk dance.

The performance was the first in the Silk Road Stories program.

“The children were quite passionate—they put a lot of expression into it,” said an Australian woman passenger who watched the show. “The expressions they had on their faces—it was lovely.”

David Dingle, who flew in from London for the opening ceremony, said: “It is principally through cultural understanding that we bring peace and prosperity to our world.”

With a capacity of 7,000 passengers, the ship will travel through the Suez Canal, along the Persian Gulf and into the Indian Ocean before it arrives in Xiamen on June 26.

It will make 22 stops in 13 different countries along the way.

“In the coming days ahead, we will celebrate with passengers from over 40 countries along the Silk Road,” said Li Xiaolin, president of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

“This is our first time to tell Chinese stories on the ocean. I hope one day we will be telling them in space,” she said. “That is my dream.”

During the trade delegation trip to China, led by Theresa May, this week, a reporter from the state owned CCTV channel asked the Prime Minister

“So, when you were in Wuhan, did you realize that you’ve got a Chinese nickname? A lot of Chinese people affectionately call you, in Chinese, “Auntie May”. You are one of the family. Do you like that?”

According to a British official with the delegation, members of the public in China “appreciate the nationalist sentiment” of Brexit (so do we)

I wonder how long it will be before the fashion conscious Prime Minister wears something with a Mandarin collar in the Commons?

Earlier, UK bank Standard Chartered reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding to grant loan credit worth £1.1 billion towards the Belt Road Initiative.

Despite liberal claims to the contrary, officials in Downing St insist May had addressed specific issues concerning Hong Kong with Premier Li and President Xi. These concerns must have been expressed in a very diplomatic manner as the Chinese tabloid “Global Times” praised May for resisting pressure from Western liberals to bring up human rights issues and declared

“Nothing can stop China-UK cooperation; noise and nagging will be carried away with the wind” (let’s hope so)
