As Prime Minister, Boris Johnson Faces the Brexit He Championed

Boris Johnson is the new leader of the Conservative Party and is set to be Britain’s next prime minister. The former foreign secretary is a hard-line supporter of Brexit.

New York Times, 23, 2019

LONDON — Boris Johnson, Britain’s brash former foreign secretary and standard-bearer for leaving the European Union, on Tuesday won the contest to succeed Prime Minister Theresa May, with his party handing the job of resolving the country’s three-year Brexit nightmare to one of its most polarizing politicians.

Mr. Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt, his successor as foreign secretary, in the battle for the leadership of Britain’s governing Conservative Party, winning with a substantial 66 percent of the postal vote held among its membership. Although the Conservatives’ working majority in Parliament is very small, it appears to be enough to ensure that Mr. Johnson will succeed Mrs. May as prime minister on Wednesday.

He would take office at one of the most critical moments in Britain’s recent history, immediately facing the toughest challenge of his career, to manage his nation’s exit from the European Union in little more than three months. But his policy swerves, lack of attention to detail and contradictory statements leave the country guessing how things will unfold.

Brexit betrayal: How Philip Hammond ‘took away Theresa May’s strongest EU weapon’

PHILIP HAMMOND is to blame for the disastrous Brexit deal Theresa May negotiated with the EU, as he effectively took away the former Prime Minister’s strongest weapon and handed it to the bloc, newspaper columnist Rod Liddle claimed in his latest book.

By MARTI BET

Senior Cabinet members claimed Boris Johnson is now “turbo-charging” preparations to leave the EU without a deal on October 31. Over the weekend, the new Prime Minister asked his Cabinet to tell newspapers and broadcasters the UK will be heading for no deal unless the bloc agrees to scrap the backstop. New Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove, in charge of no deal preparations, said the Government was “operating on the assumption” that Britain would leave without a deal and it was a “very real prospect” because EU leaders had not changed their minds about scrapping the contentious backstop.

How EU admitted it wanted to punish Britain – ‘We want to shoot!’

In a Sunday Times op-ed, he said that an agreement might not be struck with the EU by then, but there was a “new clarity of mission, we will exit the EU on October 31, no ifs, no buts, no more delay”.

On Theresa May’s Brexit deal, Mr Gove added: “You can’t just reheat the dish that’s been sent back and expect that will make it more palatable.”

After the weekend, many political analysts have suggested Mr Johnson might indeed succeed and change the mind of EU chiefs to reopen the withdrawal agreement, by “frightening them” first with no deal and then “charming” them.

In his 2019 book “The Great Betrayal”, newspaper columnist Rod Liddle claimed the threat of a no deal divorce should have been Theresa May’s most crucial bargaining chip.

Not according to the very unbiased British media. According to them the EU is sugar puffs and rainbows, where everyone is happy and everything is correct, forever. You should keep this quiet because if the Remainers find out that they might not get their BMW’s in “Urban Grey” they’ll choke on their green tea latte’s

BORIS JOHNSON’S BREXIT POWER GRAB FAILS SPECTACULARLY

Vanity Fair, 24 Sept 2019:

It’s been a disastrous few weeks for Boris Johnson. In his efforts to pull the trigger on Brexit, the new prime minister has twice failed to push through snap elections to build a majority in favor of his plan—leaving him unable to govern and facing calls for his resignation. But he still seemed primed to pull out of the European Union by the end of October, with or without a deal, thanks to a power grab in which he suspended Parliament to keep the body from mucking up his timeline.

Now, though, even that scheme appears to have failed. The U.K. Supreme Court on Tuesday struck down the prorogation, ruling unanimously that Johnson’s advice to Queen Elizabeth was “unlawful, void, and has no effect.” Deciding that Johnson had abused his powers as prime minister, Lady Hale—the president of the Supreme Court—said Tuesday that his actions “had the effect of frustrating or preventing Parliament from carrying out its constitutional functions.” She added that “The effect on the fundamentals of democracy was extreme.”

The 11-judge decision strikes yet another blow to Johnson’s plans, which critics have said were intended to stifle dissent and give members of Parliament less time to pass legislation keeping Johnson from executing his hard Brexit or call a vote of no confidence. Johnson’s opponents cheered the ruling and renewed calls for him to resign. “It demonstrates a contempt for democracy and an abuse of power by him,” Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Tuesday. “I invite Boris Johnson to consider his position, and become the shortest-serving prime minister there’s ever been.”
