If just one member state uses a veto then Britain would have to leave on March 29th come what May. Will either Poland, Italy or Hungary do the decent thing? 3
Posted by Procrastinations for Remainers on Fri, 15 Mar 2019 19:39 | # Mark Collett discusses Theresa May’s Remainer position and her meeting with bankers to reassure them before procrastination over Article 50 in order to buy them time. Collett is plainly wrong in his historical digression that it was “senseless” to oppose Hitler, however, he gives a good account of Banker’s deal with May and Parliament to effect a procrastination ruse, that could have kept Britain in limbo - in fact, in a worse position in relation to the EU - indefinitely.
Brexit being so closely tied to Farage, Ukip and its banking connections always gave it the ring of a banker’s game. The “backstop proposal” (flexibility on UK/EU borders) would be permanent if Britain and the EU couldn’t come to an agreement. Thus, Britain could be subject to the EU’s terms indefinitely; and the deal could have left Britain in a worse position with regard to the EU because it would have no EU representation. 4
Posted by mancinblack on Sat, 16 Mar 2019 01:20 | # Ten minutes into Collett’s talk and he’s wrong already. Edward Heath took Britain into the Common Market on 1st January 1973. Labour won the 1974 General Election with a commitment to hold a Referendum on Britain’s continued membership. On the 5th June 1975, the country voted to remain in the Common Market. It’s important to get the simplest of facts right, otherwise some people (moi, par exemple) will switch off. I shall listen to the rest of it though. Those who would later say “I thought it was only about trade” were paying insufficient attention, frankly. Okay, I was studying politics at the time and had more reason to pay greater attention than the average man in the street. I had also held many discussions with fellow students from other European countries, who were enthusiastic about what they referred to as the “European project”. The talk was of a European brotherhood and an end to war. 5

While there are entirely legitimate interests for Britain to leave the E.U., The Russian Federation has had an interest and potential significant influence on the leave campaign as well. 6

Perhaps not the singularly important vote overall, but tipping an important vote nevertheless in favor of the EU. Post a comment:
