First cases in Finland, India and the Philippines; death toll reaches 170

Moodie David Report: 30 Jan 2020:

Coronavirus Update: First cases in India, Finland, the Philippines; death toll reaches 170

Finland
The coronavirus outbreak has spread to Finland with the first confirmed case. Finnish media Uutiset said that the individual is a Chinese tourist from Wuhan. The 32-year-old woman is being treated in Lapland Central Hospital in Rovaniemi.

Philippines
The first case in the Philippines has been announced by the World Health Organization.

Today, the Department of Health announced the first confirmed case of the 2019 novel #coronavirus in the Philippines. The patient is 38 years old from China.

UAE
The first cases in the Middle East have been confirmed, with the Ministry of Health & Protection in the UAE announcing that a family of four has been infected. The statement added that the general health situation “is not a cause for concern” and that the Ministry advises “all citizens and residents to adhere to the general health guidelines”.

UK
British Airways has suspended flights to and from Mainland China as the coronavirus outbreak worsens. This comes as the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office advised against all travel to Hubei Province and all but essential travel to the rest of Mainland China.

China
China is likely to have a vaccine for the novel coronavirus for public use within three months. That will include a month and a half of development and a similar period of testing, according to Li Lanjuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Global Times reports.

1,459 new cases of coronavirus and 3,248 suspected cases, including one in Tibet, were reported across China yesterday alone as the spread of the virus accelerates. The total number of confirmed infections reached 5,974, with 1,239 patients in critical condition. The death toll has reached 132 while 103 patients have recovered. [Source: Global Times]

International

A scientific race to find a vaccine for the virus is underway, writes The Moodie Davitt Report Senior Research & Commercial Analyst Min Jon Jung. Here is a roundup of key breakthroughs so far.

January 10: Chinese scientists posted a complete genome of the coronavirus.

January 28: Hong Kong University Professor Yuen Kwok-yung was successful in producing a vaccine but testing on animals will take months and clinical trials at least another year.

January 29: Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Australia successful in recreating virus outside of China.

The joint global effort may help to shorten the time required to develop a successful vaccine, but the development is both expensive and time-consuming. The vaccine for the SARS virus was developed 20 months after the viral genome was released and the outbreak was contained with public health measures before the vaccine was ready.

Dr Paul Stoffels, Johnson & Johnson’s chief scientific officer, estimated it could take eight to 12 months before his company’s vaccines reach human clinical trials.

6,000 passengers trapped on cruise ship in Italy over coronavirus fears

A woman from Macau is reportedly suffering from a fever and breathing difficulties

Around 7,000 passengers and crew are stuck on a giant cruise ship in an Italian port amid fears that a Chinese tourist on board may have contracted coronavirus.

Specialist doctors are conducting tests on the 54-year-old woman from Macau, who is reportedly suffering from a fever and breathing difficulties.

She has been placed in isolation, along with her husband, in the medical unit of the Costa Smeralda.

The results of tests are expected to be known later today. If the woman is found to be infected, the passengers and crew could face a two-week quarantine aboard the cruise liner.

The Costa Smeralda is docked in Civitavecchia, a port north of Rome

The couple arrived in Italy on January 25 and boarded the ship in the port of Savona in the north of Italy that same day, a spokesman for the Costa Crociere cruise company said.

The ship visited Marseilles, Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca before docking on Thursday at Civitavecchia, north of Rome.

No one was being allowed off the ship while medical checks were carried out to see if the pair had the potentially deadly coronavirus, the spokesman said.

He said it might take “a few hours” before the situation became clearer.

The company had activated all necessary “health protocols” and its priority was to protect the health of the other passengers.

Some 6,000 passengers have been banned from disembarking a cruise ship

Photos on social media showed passengers, with their bags packed, looking fed up on board the ship.

“We arrived in [Civitavecchia] with the Costa Smeralda cruise ship and they are not letting us off the boat. They say it’s due to a health inspection,” a passenger named Gaby tweeted.

On Thursday, countries began isolating hundreds of citizens evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan to stop the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed 170 people with more than 7,800 infected globally.

Infections have been reported in at least 19 other nations, with 104 confirmed cases. India confirmed its first case on Thursday, as did the Philippines.

Airlines around the world announced they were cutting flights to China, and Hong Kong was suspending rail travel to and from the mainland at midnight.

Coronavirus: Death toll rises as virus spreads to every Chinese region

BBC 30 Jan 2020

‘The silence is horrifying’

“Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak,” he said, adding that human-to-human transmission was a concern.

More people have now been infected in China than during the Sars outbreak in the early 2000s, but the death toll remains far lower. Sars, also a coronavirus, caused acute respiratory illness.

Wuhan Virus Latest: U.S. Reports Its First Person-to-Person Transmission as Death Toll Passes 200

CaixinGlobal, 31 Jan 2020

By Lin Jinbing, Flynn Murphy, Han Wei, Dave Yin, Matthew Walsh and Denise Jia
Since December, health authorities in China have been grappling with an outbreak of viral pneumonia that has sickened nearly 10,000 people and killed more than 200.

The disease is thought to be caused by a previously unknown type of coronavirus that may have first spread to humans from animals at a now-shuttered seafood market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan, where most of the cases have been diagnosed. Further cases have been confirmed in the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Australia, and multiple Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Nepal.

Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that can cause a variety of ailments, among them the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). Most known coronaviruses cause relatively mild cold-like symptoms, but their ability to jump between humans and animals makes them hard to contain. Chinese health officials have confirmed that the new virus can spread between people, but do not believe it to be as serious as SARS or MERS.

Caixin Global will continue covering this story as it develops. Please check back regularly for updates.

Friday, Jan. 31, noon

The death toll from China’s coronavirus outbreak has reached 213.

By the end of Thursday, China had confirmed 9,720 coronavirus cases, according to the latest data released by the country’s top health body (link in Chinese). That included 1,982 new cases added over the past 24 hours.

Coronavirus has now spread to every provincial-level region in China and to 19 countries overseas. Local person-to-person transmission has been recorded in four countries outside China.

According to figures from China’s National Health Commission, 171 patients have so far recovered from the virus, and more than 100,000 are under medical observation.

Hong Kong has reported 12 cases, Macao 7, and Taiwan 9.

U.S. records its first case of person-to-person transmission

The United States has become the fourth country to record a case of the coronavirus spreading person-to-person outside China.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the patient had no history of travel to Wuhan but shared a household with another patient diagnosed with the virus 10 days ago. Both patients are in stable condition.

Illinois health officials identified the case through contact tracing, the CDC said.

Germany, Vietnam and Japan have previously reported local second-generation cases.

The head of the World Health Organization this week called cases of person-to-person spread outside China “deeply concerning” and said “they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak.”

• The U.S. State Department upgraded its travel advice telling Americans not to travel to anywhere in China because of the coronavirus.

• A paper just published by the New England Journal of Medicine is the first to document an instance of coronavirus being spread by a person who had no symptoms of the disease, in further evidence that disease control efforts are being complicated because people may be spreading the virus without realizing it. The case was from Germany.

• Italy’s Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte halted all flights to and from China and said two coronavirus patients were currently in isolation in a Rome hospital, Bloomberg reported.

• A sixth case of coronavirus was confirmed in France, according to France24.

• British researchers questioned the effectiveness of airport screening at detecting travelers who have coronavirus.

Sixty-three percent of patients with the disease could be missed at airports, according to a model built by a team at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. Preventing infected travelers from entering new places was only possible if there were virtually no asymptomatic cases, if the incubation period was short, and if the sensitivity of screening was “almost perfect.” The research has not yet been peer reviewed.

• Chinese authorities sacked a city health official who sparked public anger when she failed to answer basic questions about the health department she was running when interviewed on state television. Footage of Huanggang city health chief Tang Zhihong responding vaguely to specific questions about the outbreak there went viral Thursday (link in Chinese).

• United Airlines cut a further 332 round trips to China. A United spokesman told Caixin the company would only run four of its regular 12 daily trips from the U.S. to the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong from Feb. 9 to March 28.

Virgin Atlantic announced it would suspend some of its China flights, canceling all daily trips to Shanghai, but continuing flights to Hong Kong.

The American Airlines pilots union is suing the carrier in an effort to halt service to China, and has told members to decline flights there because of the risk posed by the coronavirus, Bloomberg reports

World Health Organization offers latest updates on coronavirus outbreak

EuroNews: SHARE THIS ARTICLE

The World Health Organization is set to update on the coronavirus situation as news came that a Wuhan hospital director has become one of the latest victims of virus.

Liu Zhiming, 51, had taken part in the battle against Covid-19 from the start and made important contributions to the work to control its spread, the Wuhan Health Commission said.

He is believed to be the seventh Chinese health professional to have succumbed from the disease since the outbreak began in late December.

The announcement of his death comes a day after Chinese health experts announced that they have found effective methods to treat the novel coronavirus which has now killed more than 1,873 people.

Guo Yanhong, deputy director of the Medical Administration Bureau of National Health Commission (NHC) said that as of February 16, more than 10,000 patients had been treated and discharged from Chinese hospitals.

The antimalarial drug Chloroquine Phosphate was found to have a certain curative effect on the virus, Chinese doctors said. Patients also received antiviral drugs.

At least 73,328 people have been infected by the virus worldwide — 72,438 of them in China

NHK WORLD - JAPAN, 23 Feb 2020:

Research: Virus did not originate at Wuhan market

Researchers in China say genetic studies have shown that the new coronavirus did not originate at a seafood market in Wuhan, Hubei Province, as initially suspected.

The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences published on its website the results of joint studies with Chinese university researchers.

The group says it analyzed the genetic data of 93 virus samples from 12 countries.

It says the results showed that the virus found at the market in Wuhan came from elsewhere, and that it spread rapidly from the market.

The researchers say their conclusion that the market was not the source was substantiated by studying the timing when patients fell ill.

The group adds that the virus appears to have spread widely on two occasions—once on December 8 and again on January 6. It says human-to-human transmission could have already begun in early December or even in late November.

The researchers say if a broader and stronger alert had been issued upon the virus’ spread in early January, it could have limited the worldwide spread of infections that began later that month.

Polish scientist Maciej Tarkowski is in a team of researchers who isolated Italian strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly called the coronavirus.

Infectious Diseases Act to be applicable in coronavirus cases
The virus strain has been isolated in a hospital in Milan, northern Italy. The discovery of the specialists will allow them to precisely track the spread and transmission of the virus.

Apart from the Pole, the team consists of researchers Alessia Loi, Annalisa Bergna, Arianna Gabrieli and professor Gianguglielmo Zehender.

The results of the research were published by professor Massimo Galli, the director of the Biomedical Research Institute.

“We have isolated virus of four patients from Codogno,” professor Galli said. This is a town in Lodi province, northern Italy, where the first case of infection of the coronavirus in Italy was recorded. It was a 38-year-old man, who did not travel to China.

The next step for the team of specialists to take is to work on the antibodies for the vaccine and treatment methods.

Only matter of time before first coronavirus case in Poland: minister

Italy is the country with the third-largest number of confirmed cases of infection of SARS-CoV-2 virus, with a total of 655 people who caught it, after China and South Korea. The higher number (705) was also recorded onboard the “Diamond Princess” cruise ship which has been quarantined in Japan’s port of Yokohama for more than three weeks.

Poland remains among the countries where there is no confirmed case of infection. Polish authorities declared that they are prepared for its arrival in Poland.

A total of 83,385 confirmed cases of coronavirus were recorded worldwide as of February 28 morning (CET). As many as 2,858 people died because of it, and 36,605 recovered. However, there are cases of people who were infected again.

Second coronavirus death reported in the U.S.

A second person has died of the novel coronavirus in the Seattle area and more confirmed cases of the illness have emerged in Washington State, officials said Sunday evening. Public health leaders in King County, Wash., said a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions died on Saturday at EvergreenHealth hospital in Kirkland. That’s the same facility where officials identified the nation’s first coronavirus death on Saturday — a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions.

Officials also announced three other confirmed coronavirus cases in the county, all at EvergreenHealth. They include a woman in her 80s, a woman in her 90s and a man in his 70s. All were in critical condition with underlying health issues. All four new cases were residents of a nursing facility in Kirkland where two other people — a resident and a worker — had previously tested positive.

Also on Sunday, the county had previously reported two other patients, unrelated to the nursing facility, who were in critical condition at hospitals in Renton and Seattle.

As of Sunday night, 88 cases of coronavirus had been identified in the United States.
