Germany is prepared to take in “an appropriate share” of the neediest refugee children housed in overcrowded Greek migrant camps, German officials said Monday.

The country is set to take children in as a part of “a coalition of the willing” to be made up of other European countries.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Krasimir Karakachanov posted a statement on his Facebook page on Monday afternoon expressing serious reservations about the prospect of a new migrant detention center being established in the Greek region of Serres.

” Accommodation of illegal migrants near our border from the Greek side is a prerequisite for tension”, the Bulgarian official said, adding that this is not a gesture of good neighborly relations.

The Bulgarian army is ready and I guarantee that I will not allow a new wave of migrants into the country” Karakachanov stated emphatically, referring to fears that these migrants could somehow cross over and enter Bulgarian territory.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister noted Turkish President Erdogan is causing the recent provocation against Europe. adding that “we cannot be held hostage to foreign conflicts and interests”.

Karakachanov concluded his statement by stating emphatically that “Bulgaria will not pay foreign bills ! “

European countries including Finland, France, Portugal and Luxembourg, and the German city of Berlin, agreed in recent weeks to take unaccompanied minors from Greece after thousands of refugees and immigrants arrived in the EU member state, including those fleeing from violence in Syria.

But some EU member states have now imposed checks at borders that are normally in a zone of control-free travel, and EU leaders were expected on Tuesday to seal the bloc’s external borders.

“The temporary shut down of cross-border movement within the EU will inevitably impact when and how vulnerable children in Greece are relocated to Germany, Finland and other states”. Afshan Khan, Special Coordinator for the Refugee and Migrant response in Europe, said by email in a response to a question from Reuters.
