“My only purpose is to save Europe”

Voice of Europe, 29 Mar 2019:

When Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini spoke at a press conference at Lega’s historic headquarters at Via Bellerio 41 in Milan he was radiant with joy. His party tripled its number of votes in the regional elections in Basilicata (in just one year, it grew from 6.2% to 19%).

In a short interview Sputnik News asked Salvini about his predictions for the elections to the European Parliament, about how he and Lega see the fate of Europe, given that, according to the recently presented Confcommercio Report, Italy is the most “Eurosceptical” country, along with the Czech Republic, and is seemingly ready for an “Italexit”.

“Neither I, nor our government, has any plans to leave the European Union, but there is a conviction that it is necessary to change its laws and regulations in order to remain a member of the European community with a sense of self-respect and dignity”, Salvini said.

“Obviously, the reality is stronger than propaganda. You can hang EU flags on the balconies, but what kind of Europe is that?”

“One that with the Bolkestein directive (the Internal Market Directive 2006/123/EC on the laws of the single market) jeopardises 300,000 jobs, and with the European standards for agriculture and fishery – millions of jobs?”

“One that is imposed on us by the Fornero law (2011 pension law, extremely unpopular in Italy), one that tells us that Italy cannot reduce taxes, one that did nothing to help us with the migration issue?”, he continued.

“I recall that Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has asked for a review of the existing norms established in the Dublin Regulation on the distribution of migrants since June last year – and nothing…”

“Therefore, Italians, as the EU continues hitting them on the head, are asking themselves: “Why do we have to keep on paying for all this?””

“My main goal is to save Europe, a renewed Europe, and Lega will do that.”

“We are being called Eurosceptics, sovereigntists, populists, Nazis, fascists, racists, xenophobes, homophobes, and so on and so forth.”

“But it is we who will pour healthy blood into Europe’s arteries again.”

“Today, I have scheduled the first week of April for the first public conference to discuss what our idea of Europe is for the next 40 years. We will discuss these ideas with those of our allies with whom we plan to meet in Parliament in Brussels in July”, he concluded.

Salvini slams Italian government’s plan to grant amnesty to 600,000 illegal migrants

By ARTHUR LYONS for Voice of Europe 7 May 2020:

Senator Matteo Salvini, the leader of the populist League party in Italy, has slammed Italy’s liberal establishment government’s plans to grant amnesty to some 600,000 illegal migrants.

According to a report from the Milan-based newspaper Il Giornale, the plan – put forward by Italian Agriculture Minister Teresa Bellanova – would allow the government to issue six-month, renewable residency and work permit to the 600,000 illegal migrants

Responding to the plan, Salvini took to Twitter, writing: “The government has announced an amnesty for illegal migrants at a time when the number of arrivals has increased by 350 percent. 136 people made landfall on Lampedusa only this evening. Italy as a migrant camp? No, thanks.”

Aside from the 181 migrants that were allowed to disembark from the cruise ship ‘Raffaele Rubattino’ on Monday in Palermo, 200 more migrants arrived on the island of Lampedusa this week. According to a report from La Repubblica, the newest group of 200 migrants joins another group of 100 or so migrants that have been living on the Favaloro pier for the past two days. A few kilometers off the coast of Lampedusa another 118 migrants are in quarantine.

Lampedusa Mayor Salvatore Martello has called on Italy’s defense and interior ministers, as well as the President of the Region, to take immediate action to remedy the situation.

“The landings continue, and in this case, moreover, there is a dangerous rejection of responsibility: in fact, no military means so far is willing to accompany the migrants from the dock to the Favaloro pier from where they must be transferred from since the hotspot is already full and cannot accommodate other migrants for the necessary medical quarantine.”

“As mayor I have no direct intervention power. What should we do? I asked to tow the boat to the pier but it is not possible to go on like this. We are in full coronavirus emergency, the citizens of the island have the right to have their health protected and I also understand that the same needs apply to the men of law enforcement. But this situation is unacceptable. The institutions that have a duty to intervene they cannot unload the weight of the reception entirely on our shoulders.”

Salvini attacks govt over migrants, says he has no regrets about Open Arms case

Former interior minister says he protected Italy

(ANSA) - ROME, 28 LUG - League leader Matteo Salvini on Tuesday attacked the government after asylum seekers under quarantine managed to escape from two migrant centres in Sicily and defended how he implemented his tough policy on migrants when he was interior minister.

The government has said most of the runaway migrants have been rounded up and it is sending the army to watch over these centres.

Salvini opened fire on Premier Giuseppe Conte’s government as spoke about a decision that the floor of the Senate is set to make about whether to grant a request for him to stand trial for allegedly ‘kidnapping’ rescued migrants in the Open Arms case, one of a string of cases stemming from his former closed ports policy against NGO-run migrant rescue ships.

The Open Arms rescue ship spent almost three weeks at sea last year after Salvini refused to give the OK for it to dock.

Regarding this case, Salvini said he was “proud of having protected Italy and the Italian people.

“I would do it again,” he added. (ANSA).
