Texas Walmart shooting: El Paso gun attack leaves 20 dead

BBC, 3 Aug 2019:

Twenty people have been killed and 26 injured in a mass shooting at a Walmart store in the Texas city of El Paso.

Governor Greg Abbott described it as “one of the most deadly days in the history of Texas”.

Police are investigating whether the attack, which happened a few miles from the US-Mexico border, was a hate crime.

A 21-year-old man is in custody. Police said the suspect lived in Allen, Dallas, about 650 miles (1,046km) east of El Paso.

He has been named by US media as Patrick Crusius.

CCTV images said to be of the gunman and broadcast on US media show a man in a dark T-shirt wearing ear protectors and brandishing an assault-style rifle.

The Texas shooting is believed to be the eighth deadliest in modern US history.

It came less than 24 hours before another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, and less than a week after a teenage gunman killed three people at a California food festival.

The police and FBI are investigating whether an anonymous white nationalist “manifesto”, shared on an online forum, was written by the gunman. The document claims the attack was targeted at the local Hispanic community.

The Walmart, which is near the Cielo Vista Mall, was full of shoppers buying back-to-school supplies at the time of the shooting.

US President Donald Trump described the attack as “an act of cowardice”.

“I know that I stand with everyone in this country to condemn today’s hateful act. There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people,” he wrote on Twitter.

The victims have not yet been named but Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said three Mexicans were among the dead, according to Reuters news agency.

“We as a state unite in support of these victims and their family members,” Mr Abbott said.

“We must do one thing today, one thing tomorrow and each and every day after this - we must unite.”

What happened?

El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen said reports of an active shooter were received at 10:39 local time (16:39 GMT), and law enforcement officers were on the scene within six minutes.

The 21-year-old is the only suspect in custody and police say no officers fired their weapons while arresting him.

Mr Allen said the ages of victims were “numerous” as he described the situation as “horrific”.

Kianna Long said she was at the Walmart with her husband when they heard gunfire.

“People were panicking and running, saying that there was a shooter,” Ms Long told Reuters. “They were running close to the floor, people were dropping on the floor.”

Ms Long said she and her husband ran through a stock room before taking cover with other customers.

Another witness, Glendon Oakly, told CNN he was in a sporting goods store in the nearby shopping mall when a child ran inside “telling us there’s an active shooter at Walmart”.

Mr Oakly said no-one took the child’s claim seriously but just minutes later he heard two gunshots.

“I just thought about getting the kids out of the way,” he said.

El Paso Police Department had earlier tweeted that blood donations were “needed urgently”.

Luke Ford’s stream is the first place where I gained access to this guy’s manifesto.

Luke reads it and offers good criticism of the act as well. Markedly, that while the manifesto echoes some WN sentiments (and even some White left ethnonational sentiments) to the discomfort of proponents, this act of vigilantism is not advisable, nor condoned.

A gunman killed nine people and injured 26 in Dayton, Ohio’s Oregon Historic District shortly after 1:00 am EST Sunday. The attack was the US’ second mass shooting in 24 hours, following another mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.

Police say the shooter, who they believe acted alone, is dead.

The shooting took place on the 400 block of East 5th Street in Dayton’s downtown, a historic and bustling part of the city that features bars and nightclubs. The shooter opened fire on the street using a long gun.

What we don’t know:

The identity of the shooter.

The motive of the shooter.

The identities and ages of the victims.

Connor Betts, 24, identified as gunman who opened fire on bar, who authorities say also killed his sister.

[...]

Initial reports by The Dayton Daily News indicate that Betts did not have a criminal record except for minor traffic violations. An initial sweep of his known social media profiles show no obvious link to any extremist ideology. Betts’ Facebook profile had been taken offline Sunday morning. The background check did also not show that Betts had a concealed weapon license.

According to what appears to be his LinkedIn page, he is a psychology student at Sinclair Community College who’d held jobs at a local gas station and a Chipotle.

Betts is a radical leftist:

https://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2019/aug/4/connor-betts-ohio-gunman-was-elizabeth-warren-supp/

The Ohio gunman described himself on social media as a pro-Satan “leftist” who wanted Joe Biden’s generation to die off, hated President Trump and law enforcement, and hoped to vote for Sen. Elizabeth Warren for president.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, rifle-wielding Connor Betts rampaged through a Dayton entertainment district, killing his sister and eight other people and leaving dozens of others wounded before police killed him.

“I want socialism, and i’ll not wait for the idiots to finally come round to understanding,” he wrote in one tweet, according to Heavy.com.

The breaking-news outlet said it had found Betts‘ Twitter page (handle @iamthespookster) and verified that the account belonged to the gunman “through multiple verification factors, including a matching tattoo on both a page selfie and prominent news outlets’ pictures of Connor Betts; several family linkages to the page; similar photos, including of him and the family dog, on the page and family members’ verified accounts; and references to college and growing up in Ohio and Dayton.”

The Twitter account painted a picture of a left-wing anarchist and discontent, very far from the anti-immigration manifesto posted by Saturday’s El Paso gunman.

“Vote blue for gods sake,” he wrote last Nov. 2. On the day of the senator’s death, Betts wrote “F—k John McCain.”

Though he had a fascination for guns, Betts also was a fan of gun control and blamed Republicans for school shootings.

“This is America: Guns on every corner, guns in every house, no freedom but that to kill,” he wrote in December, and on the day of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting, he tweeted at Sen. Rob Portman: “hey rob. How much did they pay you to look the other way? 17 kids are dead. If not now, when?”

In reference to the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, he wrote “you can’t kill 50+ people and injure 600(!) In 10 minutes with cigarettes my dude.”

Politically, Betts was on the far left. His pinned Top Tweet was a retweet of someone else’s claim that “Millennials have a message for the Joe Biden generation: hurry up and die.”

When another Twitter user posted a picture of Ms. Warren and 2020 Democratic presidential rival Kamala Harris and asked “co-Presidents?” Betts poured scorn.

“Nahh, but only cuz Harris is a cop - Warren I’d happily vote for,” he replied.

When noting that alt-right demonstrators were marching in Charlottesville, a rally that later ended in the death of Heather Heyer, he exhorted his followers: “Kill every fascist.”

According to Heavy, Betts also shared posts about “concentration camps” at the border and wrote, “Cut the fences down. Slice ICE tires. Throw bolt cutters over the fences.”

His profile specified his preferred pronouns as “he/him.”

As of Sunday, Dayton police said they had no proof of Betts‘ motive.

But not a White left ethnonationalist.

Some sort of kosher inspired left internationalist… which makes him effectively a liberal regarding our ethnonational concerns - the sound and accountable border management that ethnonational unionization would entail.

I DON’T KNOW IF I WOULD USE THE TERM LEFTIST TO DESIGNATE ONE OF THE DUDES IN MENSTRUAL MUNCHIES. ANTIFASCIST SURE. BUT NOT GREAT WITH WOMEN
Tweet from the band Neckbeard Deathcamp

Betts was singer/songwriter for a ‘pornogrind’ band called ‘Menstrual Munchies’, apparently.

Another devotee of the pornogrind scene, Zack Walton from the band Groin Mallet, said Mr Betts actions in Dayton would give the music a bad name

Misogynistic, sexually violent lyrics aren’t enough to give the genre a bad name, then? Betts sounds like the neighbourhood psycho, frankly.

When an establishment figure like Charles Moore starts attacking the media dictate you know that the ground is shaking:
https://blogs.spectator.co.uk/2019/08/the-inconvenient-truth-about-the-el-paso-shooter/

Who wrote ‘Our lifestyle is destroying the environment of our country… creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly over-harvesting resources… the next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable’?

The answer, if media reports are accurate, is Patrick Crusius, the man accused of the El Paso massacre. The words appeared in his testament, entitled (in homage to Al Gore?) The Inconvenient Truth, which he seems to have put online before decreasing the number of people in America by 22.

Who said, on Twitter, ‘I want socialism, and I’ll not wait for the idiots to finally come round to understanding’? Connor Betts, the man accused of shooting nine people, including his sister, in Dayton, Ohio.

This week’s reporting of the two atrocities has painted Crusius as a white supremacist. This does not seem to be accurate. In his manifesto, he is against ethnic mingling and mass immigration, but his view that immigrants should be killed is based not on racial superiority theory, but on his sense that too many people pollute the environment of America.

He despairs of persuading his fellow Americans to change their consumerist lifestyles, so he decides to attack the ‘invaders’ instead. As for Betts, the self-styled ‘leftist’, coverage has tended to slide past his political views. It is seriously bad that both cases have been so partially reported. If we are to work out the motivations of unhappy/trigger-happy young men such as these, shouldn’t we carefully expose all the preposterous justifications they make for their evil acts?

Some of them — mostly to do with race — come from the right. Some — mostly to do with saving the planet from human beings — come from the left. Betts sounds like a potential Bernie Sanders recruit. Crusius seems closer to Extinction Rebellion than to Donald Trump.

8chan owner, Jim Watkins, has this to say…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKPdbEAmWGE&t=183s

First of all, the El Paso shooter posted on Instagram, not 8chan. Later someone uploaded a manifesto, however, that manifesto was not uploaded by the Walmart shooter. I don’t know if he wrote it or not but it was not uploaded by the murderer, that is clear, and law enforcement was made aware of this before most people had heard the horrific news.

At this stage, the only observations I would care to make regarding the motives of the El Paso killer are that if he wanted to simply reduce the size of the American population, he didn’t have to travel over six hundred miles to do it ; and that since he took office Trump has been busy weaponizing the American right against Hispanics and Asians.

A shooting at a mosque in Norway is being investigated as a “possible act of terrorism” according to police.

One person was injured in the armed attack at the al Noor Islamic Centre near Oslo on Saturday. Assistant police chief Rune Skjold told a news conference that the suspect, who is described as a young white man, was carrying several guns and had previously expressed far right and anti-immigrant views online.

He said “We’re investigating this as an attempt at carrying out an act of terrorism”

Mosque director Irfan Mushtaq said the gunman wore a helmet and a uniform, adding “The man carried two shotgun-like weapons and a pistol. He broke through the glass door and fired shots”.

A 75 year old member of the congregation suffered a minor injury to his eye as he overpowered the gunman - the only injury sustained in the attack. Mr Mushtaq said “So this guy came to the door and our hero, a man of 75 years old, he was very fast in his reaction….

75? maybe there’s something in that geriatric army idea after all….

Norwegian Prime Minister said “I think we need to do the work that we are doing combating hate speech. We have a special action plan towards that, which is not just on Islamophobia but on a lot of other issues where you have hate speech. We have to work on their empathy level, to understand each other”

The attacker, who is now in custody, is also suspected of killing one of his own family members who was found dead at his home.

Norway mosque attack suspect ‘inspired by Christchurch and El Paso shootings’

The suspected gunman in an attack on a mosque in Norway on Saturday was inspired by recent white extremist attacks in New Zealand and the US, online posts suggest. Police in Norway have so far only said the attack in Baerum, a town 20km from Oslo, the capital, will be investigated as a possible act of terrorism.

In messages posted on the day of the attack, Philip Manshaus, a 21 year old man who has been named by local media as the main suspect, described himself as “chosen” by “Saint [Brenton] Tarrant”, the gunman who killed 51 people at a mosque in New Zealand in March.

“My time is up, I was chosen by Saint Tarrant after all…we can’t let this continue, you gotta bump up the race war threat in real life…it’s been fun”  one post reads. In a meme posted by Manshaus, three right wing extremists suspected of being responsible for attacks this year are depicted as heroes of the white nationalist movement.

Tarrant is described as having “addressed the Muslim problem” while Patrick Crusius, who has been charged with the attack in El Paso, Texas, in which 22 people died is praised for “fighting to reclaim his country, A third attacker suspected of killing a woman during a Passover celebration at a synagogue in California in April, is also praised, alongside antisemitic abuse.

The evidence supporting the actions of the three suspects will fuel fears that a “cascade” of right wing extremist attacks is gathering supporters around the world.

“We are now no longer talking about one off events, but a loosely coordinated chain of far right attacks across the world, where members of these networks inspire - and challenge - each others’ body counts” said Peter Neumann professor of security studies at Kings College London. “The ultimate motivation is to start a race war.The aim is to carry out attacks, claim responsibility, explain your action and inspire others to follow”.

The Guardian, more….
