FROM THE NEW MIDDLE AGES TO A NEW DARK AGE: THE DECLINE OF THE STATE AND U.S. STRATEGY
“Underlying the change from traditional geopolitics to security as a governance issue is the long-term decline of the state. Despite state resilience, this trend could prove unstoppable. If so, it will be essential to replace dominant state-centric perceptions and assessments [what the author terms “stateocentrism” - gt] with alternative judgments acknowledging the reduced role and diminished effectiveness of states.”
“The first option seeks to quarantine and contain disorder and chaos as far from the United States as possible. The second option seeks to quarantine the United States itself, thereby protecting it from the most serious consequences of an inexorable trend. A third option, lying somewhere between these extremes, offers a more selective and differentiated strategy.”
Fundamental, moderately interesting ideas some of us have considered for a long time. The author is quite focused on the growth of organized crime and even ventures into the concept of tight, ethnically-organized transnational crime groups. I’m sure he realizes that Thought Crime lies in that direction, however.
From what I can tell the author doesn’t address expanded access to ‘technology” – that is, access to relatively free flowing technical information on the Internet. From a “stateocentric” perspective easy access to practical information could promote the dissolution of today’s huge global trading empire comprised of highly specialized, centralized producers.
Free-Trade Era May Be Nearing End Amid Food, Growth Concerns
I.e., “Grain & Oil”. It hasn’t occurred to the zombies of this era that self-reliance can’t be outsourced. Even if technical information flows freely there is still a steep learning curve. One example of this are the math books available in the library system.
Prior to globalization “The State” could be described as the “Permanent Industrial Warfare State.” Its strategy was Option #1, above. The future will see Options #1 & #2 exercised in tandem with greater coordination between government agencies.
Furthermore, when we consider the huge quantities of technical books with non-renewed copyrights withheld from public distribution along with the eradication of “terrorist” technology (gun, bomb, and rocket-building information) from the Internet since 11 September, 2001, it’s clear that further restrictions on access to technical information will be made if economic self-reliance within the confines of North America becomes a problem for the State.
Follow the example of North America’s Indian transplants: Download non-copyrighted material into a technical database as soon as possible.
