The years of the flood

Seasoned MR readers might remember that we’ve featured a couple of posts about the English accoustic folk duo, Show of Hands.  I was much taken by the simple trust for and faith in their own English people that Steve Knightley and Phil Beer display.  But I’m posting the video of their number The Flood from the 2001 album Cold Frontier for a different reason.

A Lewes resident during the floods of 2000, I recognised straight away Steve Knightley’s descriptive account of “the Southern Chalk downland ... soaked after weeks of hard rain” and “streams that were dry since the war, they’re flowing again”.  But it was what followed that surprised me.  Here is Knightley linking the flood we saw with climate change and desertification, African boat people, the Sangatte crisis of 1999-2002 and most remarkably and presciently, the debt crisis of today.  The central theme to all of this is the “cost of the flood” that “everyone round here is counting”.

Naturally, this conjunction of folk music and protest of social issues would have moved Knightley and Beer - men of my age - in their youth.  But how refreshing to encounter it today allied to an overarching concern for the real people of this country.  The more I hear of these two guys, the more I find to agree with and admire.

Show of Hands is one of the few bands whose music I actually buy. If you find any more good bands, do let us know. Actually, feel free to email me or add me to some email list. We’re in need of a culture.

Blind Guardians is another good band, though a different style. Some other videos collected at kinism. Older American music probably has a number of diamonds, but I’m unfamiliar with a lot of it.

In the lyrics to “Roots”:

When the Indians, Asians, Afro-Celts
It’s in their blood, below their belt
They’re playing and dancing all night long
So what have they got right that we’ve got wrong?

Heh, why does he refer to Celts as “Afro-Celts”? It’s one thing to say that in context of “Old European” as in those who lived in southern Europe and northern Africa, but it’s another to blur us into sub-Sahara Africans. Not that I mind - I really just find that reference funny.

Also interesting, and perhaps this is where the “Afro-Celt” reference came from:

Witness is the ninth studio album by Show of Hands. The album was recorded in January 2006 at Presshouse Studio, Colyton, Devon, and was produced by Simon Emmerson and Simon ‘Mass’ Massey from the Afro Celts, who helped to incorporate elements of traditional African, ambient and electronic dance music with the duo’s characteristic folk style. It was released in May 2006 on the Hands on Music label (HMCD23).

wikipedia.

Interesting that that melding seems to have been a hit - obviously I’d prefer nothing “African” or “electronic dance” in the music, but I just found this interesting.

Interesting.  I had put down Knightley’s usage in that instance to the difficulty of fitting the longer Afroes into the note sequence.  We know that we think he means, anyway - which is the only meaning that makes sense.

I too had assumed the usage was due to fitting, and I don’t dismiss that possibility still. The term “Afro-Celt” was found on a mere fan site, not pulled from any official lyrics. And even if that is the official, we don’t know specifically what is meant. But it is amusing to think on it, if Knightly views Celts as white monkeys perhaps. Though again, that wouldn’t matter to me: so long as it doesn’t involve violence, I tend to like when people prefer their own.

I tend to really like it when people praise their town or county or micronation as preferred to another’s. I don’t think in terms of superiority and inferiority so much as simply particularities. I very much like the American mix of whites, and I very much like the various British mixes so far as I’ve been introduced to them. These peoples though I don’t see as “the best” but simply worth defending.

I do like that Europeans and East Asians are especially pure, relative to the rest of much of the planet. And I’d sincerely like both to be preserved, though at the same time I very much prefer my own peoples. Were I in Britain similarly, I’m sure I’d stick out and even come to long for the US too - this is where I belong between those two even if the roots ultimately sink largely into Britain for me (I’m not an Amerindian after all - Britain would be the “fatherland”, or at least the center of such which would include more of Europe).

Without another nation to define ourselves against, nationalism becomes rather tiresome I imagine. There’s not much special about being a European if that’s the only rough nationality in the world and the rest is all mixed away. And similarly I only wish to help those other European nationalities even if I’m less enthusiastic than seemingly some in here about joining a unified white amalgam. I dunno if that’s even reasonable to reject such a thing here in the States, but that’s where my instincts take me nevertheless. America’s founding stock was “northwest European”, and I like that. But that’s not to say the rest is to be somehow harmed only that I don’t personally favour mixing with the rest. But the future isn’t set, and I dunno what options will be available, etc. I’m certainly not seeking to divide white Americans, but again complete unity doesn’t seem so “juvenile” as Francis described it (reg. specifically Southern independence though this is an analogous issue) if approached responsibly.

Curse of the Tamar ... Devon vs Cornwall, perhaps.

Frank, the White American Question is whether there is enough shared capital among whites to engender a common sense of direction.  “America the Idea” holds sway, and it’s that which white Americans must separate from if they are to rally to a racial standard and to self-preservation.  No sign of it yet, no matter than MacDonald has discovered “implicit whiteness”.

It would give European nationalism a huge shot in the arm if the essentially American global project could be opposed in America.  But right now you’d have to say that it looks as though Europeans will have to save themselves and try to save white America later.
