Well it wasn’t. For most Britons life then was bloody hard. My maternal grandmother, born in 1902 and the youngest of thirteen brother sand sisters and half brothers and sisters (father widowed from his first marriage mother divorced from hers - yes, they had divorce back then too ) mentioned to me that at the age of fifteen, she was working in a cotton mill. One day she happened to reach up to adjust the loom when a spindle shot up, went into her armpit and came out of her shoulder. I know England has lost its unique character but in many ways young people today have never had it so good. What was to become England was hardly a wildwood when the Saxons and others arrived. The only white horse hill figure of genuine antiquity is at Uffington and dates from the Bronze Age. The others are much later, typically eighteenth century. Then there is the question of who the early Englisc actually were. They were not just Germanic language incomers. The native Britons had not gone away, nor is there evidence of ethnic cleansing. A hybrid population was soon created. Does this matter? I think it matters if you are speaking of indigenous people .Why stop at the migration period when you can take your ancestral residence in this land back four and a half thousand years or more? DNA test results suggest 36% as being the average British contribution to the typical English persons genetic inheritance. 36% is likely to be the largest from any single ethnic group. 8
