Mam Tor (Brittonic, meaning Mother Hill ) is near Castleton in the dark peaks and as an aside, the original Roman spelling of Manchester was Mamchester. Mam Tor is the site of a late bronze age to early iron age hillfort. There are also two bronze age burial mounds by the Tor.
During the Bronze and Iron ages, the spine of Brittannia formed part of the territory of the Brigantes tribe, who were the largest in the country. Their land consisted of modern day Lancashire, Yorkshire, Northumberland and Durham. The name Brigantes was derived from the proto-Celtic *brigant, meaning ‘high’ in the sense of elevation and/or status. In modern Welsh, the word ‘braint’ which is also derived from *brigant, means ‘privilege’.
The main deity of the Brigantes was ‘Brigantia’ (High One) and the Romans associated her with their own goddesses Minerva and Victoria. So, all in all, that’s not a bad place to unfurl that banner and express the sentiment ‘White Lives Matter’.
