WHO declares COVID-19 disease to be a pandemic

The coronavirus crisis continues to unfold across the globe as the World Health Organization uses the word for the first time.

For the first time, the World Health Organization called the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, a pandemic. Meanwhile, the United States now has more than 1,000 people infected with the coronavirus — but testing in the country is still ramping up, meaning that number could continue to climb.

WHO defines a pandemic as the worldwide spread of a new disease for which most people do not have immunity.

On Wednesday, the governor of New York questioned the number of people who have been tested for the virus in the U.S.

“When they do the retrospective on this one, they are going to say, ‘Why did it take the Unites States so long to bring up the testing capacity?’” Gov. Cuomo said on “TODAY.” On Tuesday, Cuomo announced that he was implementing a “containment area” around a one-mile radius in the city of New Rochelle, home to one of the largest clusters of coronavirus cases in the country.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have said that more than 8,500 specimens have been tested for the coronavirus across the U.S. Because multiple specimens are required from each individual, the number of actual patients who have been tested is likely far lower.

Poland reports first death from COVID-19, to raise epidemic alert level

WARSAW: Poland has reported its first death from coronavirus, local authorities in the city of Poznan said on Thursday (Mar 12), as reported by private broadcaster TVN24.

The 57-year-old female teacher, who had recently been hospitalised in critical condition with pneumonia, was put into an artificial coma and on a ventilator but “unfortunately she died not long ago,” Poznan deputy mayor Jedrzej Solarski told reporters.

Poland currently has 46 other confirmed cases of coronavirus, according to the health ministry.

The woman’s husband and daughter are among those hospitalised with coronavirus but their conditions are not critical. Other family members, including the woman’s two sons, have not been infected.

“What we feared over the last few days has come about. We have our first death from the coronavirus,” Polish President Andrzej Duda told reporters.

“I offer my condolences to her close ones.”

STATE OF EPIDEMIC THREAT

Poland plans to announce a state of epidemic threat, health minister Lukasz Szumowski said on Thursday.

“Yesterday, the WHO announced a pandemic. Today we will release a decision by the Health Minister regarding the introduction of a state of epidemic threat,” Szumowski told a press conference.

This will allow the government to close chosen places of work or institutions and direct medical workers to places of need, he added.

Slovakia bans foreigners from entering the country, stops international travel, closes schools and imposes weekend closures at shopping centres… despite only 16 coronavirus cases

Daily Mail 13 March 2020:

The landlocked country, which has so far reported 16 cases of the virus, also plans to close sport, leisure and entertainment centres.

Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said international freight transport would continue, despite a freeze on air travel.

The Czech Republic will also close its borders to travellers coming from Germany and Austria and ban the entry of foreigners from some other countries.

The precautionary measures come after Poland recorded its first death from the coronavirus outbreak in the western city of Poznan.

Slovakia has closed schools and stopped all international travel as it takes drastic measures to battle the growing spread of coronavirus strain COVID-19.

The landlocked European country will introduce border checks, stop travel to and from the country and close schools as it steps up measures to combat the disease, Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said on Thursday.

Slovakia, which has so far reported 16 cases of the new virus, also plans to close sport, leisure and entertainment centres like ski areas, pools and clubs, and will shut shopping centres over weekends.

Pellegrini said international freight transport would continue, despite a freeze on air travel.

Slovakia had already banned flights to and from Italy - the country worst hit by the outbreak in Europe - and banned cultural, sport and other public events.

A 14-day quarantine period imposed on Slovak citizens returning from Italy will now be extended to all those returning from abroad, Pellegrini confirmed.

‘Our goal is to delay the increase of this illness in Slovakia,’ he added. ‘We have to buy time. The later the contagion comes, the more information from scientists we will have and we can take more new measures.’

The school closures will also last for 14 days from Monday.

The Czech Republic will also close its borders to travellers coming from Germany and Austria and ban the entry of foreigners coming from other risky countries to contain the coronavirus outbreak, Prime Minister Andrej Babis confirmed on Thursday.

Citizens will also be barred from travelling to those areas. Among other measures, the government banned public events of more than 30 people and closures of places such as sport centres or spa services, while restaurants must close by 8:00 p.m.

Death of 12-year-old girl in Belgium from Covid-19 ‘shook us’

A 12-year-old girl confirmed infected with Covid-19 has died in Belgium, health officials have said.

A fatality at such a young age “is a very rare occurrence,” said government spokesman Dr Emmanuel Andre, adding that her death “shook us”.

The girl had had a fever for three days before her death, and tested positive for Covid-19, said another spokesman, Steven Van Gucht.

No other details were given about her case, including whether she had any other underlying health problems.

It was the first death of a child in the coronavirus crisis in Belgium, which has now recorded a total 705 deaths from the disease, according to the latest official toll.

Last week, France reported the death of a 16-year-old girl from coronavirus in the greater Paris region.

Although serious Covid-19 infections are uncommon among the young, some exceptional cases have been taken to hospital intensive-care wards, as US health authorities have pointed out.

Belgium’s death toll on Tuesday represented a jump of nearly 200 fatalities from that given the previous day, which stood at 513.

It comprised 98 deaths recorded in the preceding 24-hour period, plus another 94 deaths over previous days but which had not been counted in the national tally, Mr Andre said.

Belgium, with a population of 11.4 million, now has 12,775 cases of people tested positive for Covid-19, of whom 4,920 have been hospitalised, including 1,021 in intensive care.

Hospitals in Brussels and in two provinces, in the north and the west, are now confronted with “a more complicated situation” as beds fill up, Mr Andre said.

Express 1 April 2020:

Terrifying coronavirus map puts UK on path for WORSE outbreak than Italy as deaths soar

CORONAVIRUS related deaths in the UK are on course to surpass the number of fatalities in Italy, new terrifying data has suggested.

The Department for Health has this afternoon confirmed the total number of coronavirus deaths in the UK has soared by 563 in the past 24 hours – the highest daily increase since the outbreak in Britain began. The huge surge in COVID-19 deaths means the total number of fatalities has increased from 1,789 to 2,352. Research by the Cato Institute – an independent US think-tank – has found in the 20 days since the 10th recorded death, the UK is now ahead of Italy.

In that time period Italy, the country with the most coronavirus related deaths in the world, had 2,158 fatalities.

By comparison, the UK has now surpassed that total by 194 with 2,352 deaths.

Following the initial 20 day timeframe, the number of deaths in Italy has continued on a steep trajectory with more than 12,000 fatalities to date.

US markets soar on hopes coronavirus deaths will soon level off

Al Jazeera 4 hours ago

US markets rise more than seven percent, but unemployment fears continue to mount.

[...]

On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters that 630 New Yorkers died of virus-related illnesses on Saturday, but that on Sunday, New York recorded 594 virus-related deaths. On Monday, the death toll stood at 599 - also below 600.

The slowdown in deaths in the US COVID-19 epicentre increased hopes that the pandemic is leveling off. The governor also said hospitalisations of coronavirus patients are down in the country’s hardest-hit state. But he cautioned against complacency.

Even with the positive signs, US officials are preparing the country for a “peak death week” from the pandemic, when the death toll could top 10,000. That warning carries with it powerful economic implications.

The World Health Organization chief angrily slams recent comments made by [French]scientists suggesting a vaccine for the new coronavirus should be tested in Africa as “racist” and a hangover from the “colonialist mentality”.

Video..

https://www.france24.com/en/africa/20200406-coronavirus

One of the reasons, given in the report, for why Africa shouldn’t be used as a ‘testing ground’ for a vaccine is that Africa has far fewer cases of coronavirus than Europe. Fair enough, until you read (also in France 24) the following…

In an interview with France 24 Moussa Faki Mahamat, chairperson of the African Union Commission , discussed the covid-19 pandemic, which is gaining ground on the continent. He expressed hope that the international community would help Africa cope with the unprecedented health crisis and appealed to multilateralism. “It’s an international challenge which requires an international response” he said

This sounds like a colonised attitude to me..

As the covid-19 pandemic spreads across the continent the Chadian diplomat called on the international community to go beyond “good intentions” and give massive support to Africa, estimating that between   “$100-150 billion are needed for the time being”.

Mahamat also rambled on about the economic hardship and ‘displaced persons’ that Africa would have to cope with due to coronavirus, giving the impression of a not-so-veiled threat a la Turkey, behind the watermelon smile.

An outbreak of African swine fever was confirmed on a farm near the village of Wieckowice near Poznan in Western Poland, less than 150km from the border with Germany.

African swine fever is a highly contagious virus which is fatal to pigs. It is transmitted between animals or through infected meat or animal feed and has been seen as having the potential to transmit to humans. There is an ongoing outbreak in China that has already wiped out 40% of pigs in the country.

The outbreak is Poland’s second in 2020 and the first in the Poznan region, an important centre of pig farming.

At last. The elephant in the room is noticed.

Part of the relative toll expected in the UK comes down to factors beyond our control.

The population is one of the largest in Europe, while the country is a densely populated island generally, with severe areas of particularly high concentration - London in particular.

Given that the spread of the virus is directly proportional to the number of people a person comes into contact with, the UK’s population and distribution puts it at a distinct disadvantage to much more sparsely populated countries like Finland and even France.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/health/medical/why-the-uk-could-be-europes-biggest-coronavirus-casualty/ar-BB12zG1C?ocid=spartandhp

England, rather than the UK as a whole, is the most densely populated major country in Europe and one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with this situation being entirely within the control of government. This needs to be repeated. And repeated often.

Progressive liberals and the race industry are making the most of their lockdown time developing strategies for the post virus postmortem.

Ethnic minorities and young people are taking a disproportionate financial and employment hit from the coronavirus pandemic, exclusive polling shows.

The “shocking” findings sparked a call from race equality campaigners for urgent government action to protect communities who provide an outsized share of those at risk from the disease as they continue to work in essential frontline services like health and social care and bus driving.

The BMG poll for The Independent [owned by a Russian billionaire] laid bare the scale of hardship across the country resulting from the lockdown measures to tackle the outbreak, with almost a third of all households seeing their finances cut and more than one in three saying that they had lost over half their income.

But it showed that people from black and ethnic minority (Bame) households were almost twice as likely as white Britons to report lost income and jobs…

Operation Black Vote director Simon Woolley described the findings as “shocking” and said “dramatic action” was needed from the government to protect the interests of ethnic minority communities which provide a high proportion of the NHS staff fighting coronavirus on the frontline, including all of the doctors to die so far in the UK.

“The government needs to take dramatic action to protect the people who in many ways have been the bedrock of tackling the coronavirus - not only the healthcare workers but also bus drivers who are running the risk of infection to keep our cities operating” said Lord Woolley, who chairs an advisory group to No 10’s race disparity unit.

“The virus itself doesn’t discriminate but the system does, and that has left Bame communities extremely vulnerable both on health and economic grounds”.

“There is a debt owed to these communities by the government and the nation and they must not be left behind”.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/coronavirus/coronavirus-economic-effects-hitting-ethnic-minorities-and-young-people-hardest/ar-BB12zW7k?ocid=spartandhp

So because some black and minority ethnic people work in essential services (for which they are paid) the nation owes a debt to their entire communities? give over. As for young people being more likely to be laid off or made redundant, it needs to be appreciated that few young people have an independent roof over their heads - a result of high levels of immigration exacerbating the country’s chronic housing shortage and are unlikely to have dependents. So what is the obvious decision for an employer to make?

Battle lines being drawn.

The Chinese city of Wuhan raised its death toll from the novel coronavirus by 50% on Friday, bringing its total to 3,869, amid doubts about the accuracy of China’s data on the disease as global cases mount.

The central city where the virus first appeared in humans late last year added 1,290 fatalities to the 2,579 previously counted as of Thursday, reflecting incorrect reporting, delays and omissions, according to a local government task force in charge of controlling the coronavirus.

Reflecting the additional deaths in Wuhan, China revised up its national death toll later on Friday to 4,632.

The revision follows widespread speculation that Wuhan’s death toll was significantly higher than reported.

Rumours of more victims have for weeks been fuelled by pictures of long queues of family members waiting to collect ashes of cremated relatives and reports of thousands of urns stacked at a funeral home waiting to be filled.

During Thursday’s White House coronavirus taskforce briefing, an official presented the results of US government research that indicated coronavirus appeared to weaken when exposed to sunlight and heat.

The study also showed bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minute and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

Mr Trump then hypothesised about the possibility of using a “tremendous ultraviolet” or “just a very strong light” on or even inside the body as potential treatment.

“And I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute”  he said.  “And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? because you see it gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number on them, so it’d be interesting to check that” he said.

Police attended the scene of an anti-lockdown protest on Saturday led by Jeremy Corbyn’s brother.

Officers headed to the rally in Glastonbury, Somerset, after some activists appeared to breach social distancing guidelines.

A video uploaded via social media shows Piers Corbyn, the 73 year old older brother of the former Labour leader, giving a speech to what he claims was a crowd of 100 people.

In the speech, Mr Corbyn claimed “We know there is no pandemic…there’s no pandemic”. He went on to claim that death figures show there are “less people dying” than normal - despite excess mortality figures showing thousands more deaths than the seasonal average.

Yesterday, Monday the 27th, the BBC’s Panorama run a programme titled ‘Has the government failed the NHS ?’ and needless to say, the programme makers found that the government has indeed ‘failed the NHS ’ over the provision of PPE. The health expert the BBC used in the Programme was former North West regional public health director Professor John Ashton, described as a ‘long standing critic of the government’. What the BBC failed to tell viewers is that Ashton is a long time card carrying member of the Labour party and a rabid Corbynista,  who in 2018 used his Twitter account to equate the Tories with the Nazis. Clearly, the BBC remain as unbiased as always. So too the liberal press…

Not to defend Trump, but the BBC, like American news outlets, is editorial in its coverage of the White House in a way that I have never experienced. It is disconcerting.

I can’t imagine a major news outlet like the BBC saying of Bill Clinton or Tony Blair, “their erratic handling of the crisis.”

Black people are four times more likely to die from coronavirus than white males and females, startling new figures reveal.

When taking age into account, black women are 4.3 times more likely to die and black men 4.2 times more likely to die, a study from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) found.

The figures show that people of Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Indian, Chinese and mixed ethnicities are also at significantly greater risk of dying from COVID-19 than white people.
