Nya Dagbladet (New Daily) has taken the temperature of the refugee and migration debate. People cannot escape the influence of the migration issue any longer. What to do Swedes think? We asked the residents of Sundsvall what they think about the situation.

Can Sweden take on more?

Can you imagine receiving migrants in your home?

Are there refugees who lie about their reasons for asylum?

Should refugees return to their home countries as soon as the situation allows?

Is there a solution to the problems of the third world and for people that come here?

There were some of the questions we asked. The picture seems to be that more and more Swedes feel that the situation is untenable and most blame the ruling politicians. Criticism of so many migrants who have no asylum and refugee status but who are allowed to enter are growing. Many seem as if they would just like to get to Sweden, one woman says to our reporter. Her fears were confirmed earlier this year by European Commissioner Frans Timmermans, who went out and announced that 60 per cent, i.e., the majority of those who come to Europe while claiming to be refugees, are in fact, estimated to be economic migrants, according to the EU border control agency Frontex.

“Pope Francis criticises nationalism and suggests people should embrace diversity”

In his traditional Christmas speech, Pope Francis criticised nationalism and called cultural differences a “source of richness”.

Speaking about increasing nationalism in the Western world as a result of migration from North Africa and the Middle East the spiritual leader said:

“Our differences are not a detriment or a danger; they are a source of richness. As when an artist is about to make a mosaic: it is better to have tiles of many colours available, rather than just a few,” the Pope told a large audience in the Vatican.

“The experience of families teaches us this,” he said, “as brothers and sisters, we are all different from each other. We do not always agree, but there is an unbreakable bond uniting us, and the love of our parents helps us to love one another,” he added.

Among other things, the Pope also talked about materialism and its side effects:

“An insatiable greed marks all human history, even today, when, paradoxically, a few dine luxuriantly while all too many go without the daily bread needed to survive,” he said.

“Standing before the manger, we understand that the food of life is not material riches but love, not gluttony but charity, not ostentation but simplicity,” the Pope added.
