Brazil’s Bolsonaro does not rule out retaining central bank chief Goldfajn

Ilan Goldfajn (born March 12, 1966) is an Israeli-born Brazilian economist and the current President of the Central Bank of Brazil. Biography: Goldfajn was born in Haifa, Israel. He graduated in Economics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, received a master’s degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and a doctorate from MIT. He was appointed to the position of President of the Central Bank by Minister of Finance Henrique Meirelles on May 12, 2016.

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil’s presidential front-runner Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday he does not rule out keeping acclaimed central bank chief Ilan Goldfajn in the job, on a day that thousands took to the streets of major cities to protest against the far-right candidate: “I am not sure if he will be kept but what is working should be kept,” Bolsonaro told journalists in Rio when asked about Goldfajn’s future.

At the helm of the central bank since June 2016, Goldfajn has kept a tight lid on inflation and was considered the best central banker by The Banker magazine for taming inflation in Latin America’s largest economy.

Goldfajn is preparing to step down by year’s end, Bloomberg reported on Thursday.

As the Brazilian central bank does not have full institutional independence, incoming presidents typically replace its top official, creating political risk for monetary policy. President Michel Temer will leave office on Jan. 1.

Bolsonaro also said on Saturday that he intends to tap astronaut Marcos Pontes as science and technology minister in his eventual government. The candidate had already announced part of his potential cabinet, including banker Paulo Guedes as economy minister, retired Army general Augusto Heleno Pereira as defense minister and Congressman Onyx Lorenzoni as his chief of staff.

WOMEN-LED PROTESTS

Bolsonaro, a polarizing candidate who has been charged with hate speech for his comments regarding gays, blacks and women, faced a second wave of women-led protests in a month on Saturday.

A Facebook group called Women United Against Bolsonaro invited protesters to gather in 26 Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Other movements also organized protests against Bolsonaro.

In the most polarizing election in a generation, Bolsonaro’s opponent in the Oct. 28 runoff is leftist candidate and former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad.

According to a recent survey by pollster Datafolha, Bolsonaro was expected to win 59 percent of votes, compared to Haddad’s 41 percent.

Bolsonaro has successfully pitched himself as the anti-establishment candidate, gaining voters fed up with political graft and violent crime.

The far-right candidate nearly died from a stab wound at a rally in early September and skipped debates and most campaign events after spending weeks in the hospital.

“Bolsonaro has made grim threats to the Amazon and its people”

http://www.climatechangenews.com/2018/10/08/bolsonaro-made-grim-threats-amazon-people/

“No more Paris Agreement. No more ministry of environment. A paved highway cutting through the Amazon. Not only that. Indigenous territories opened to mining. Relaxed environmental law enforcement and licensing. International NGO’s such as Greenpeace and WWF banned from the country. A strong alliance with the beef lobby”.

#EleÑao as the girls from Brazil say.

Bolsonaro wins 55.7% of the vote and will become Brazil’s new president. “Brazil now has a more extreme president than any democratic country in the world…we don’t know what is going to happen” Celso Rocha Barros, a Brazilian political columnist told Piaui magazine.

Bolsonaro wants to put the military in the streets to kill niggers.  He is right wing.  Since when has the left appealed to anyone but pussies, malcontent losers and genetic defectives?

CC, the only reason Daniel tolerates you here is because I have extended a welcome to you on the basis that you would attempt to engage substantively and contribute, given your undoubted intelligence and eloquence when it suits you.  You have refused pointblank to do so, and for the most part offered asinine remarks laced with derision, usually for no other purpose but to annoy.  Further, you wilfully employ language which you know perfectly well to be outside the law in Europe - an act one can only interpret as outright hostility to both of us.  You have, therefore, roundly and consistently abused my goodwill.  I think we have reached the point where it would be best for you to depart.  I am not banning you.  You are always welcome to return if you wish to engage constructively.  But I don’t see any further purpose in keeping the site open to you in this vein.

If Bolsonaro implements his programmes Brazil will be very profitable for investors and the super rich at the expense of the rest of the population, particularly the indigenous population he considers worthless. Since when has the Far Right appealed to anyone who isn’t retarded?

“Had a very good conversation with the newly elected President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who won his race by a substantial margin. We agreed that Brazil and the United States will work closely together on Trade, Military and everything else ! Excellent call, wished him congrats !” Donald J Trump via Twitter 29-10-18.

Point proved.

“Jair Bolsonaro confirmed on Thursday (1st) his plans to move the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. “Israel is a sovereign state and we respect that” he said.

Hours later, the Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu thanked Bolsonaro “I congratulate my friend, president elect Jair Messias Bolsonaro for his pledge to transfer the Brazilian embassy to Jerusalem, a historic and thrilling step in the right direction” he said.”

“Asked whether he intends to close the Palestinian embassy in Brasilia, which was one of his campaign promises, Bolsonaro replied “[the embassy] was built too close to the presidential residence, so we intend to transfer it to another location. Besides, Palestine needs to be a state before it is entitled to an embassy”.

An area of Amazon rainforest roughly the size of a football pitch is now being cleared every single minute, according to satellite data. The rate of loss has accelerated as Brazil’s new right-wing President favours development over conservation…

According to a Brazilian government official the impact is so “huge” that he took the risk of giving us an unauthorised interview, to bring it to the attention of the world. We had to meet in secret and disguise his face and voice because Mr Bolsonaro has banned his environment staff from talking to the media. Over the course of three hours, a startling picture emerged of small under resourced teams of government experts passionate about saving the forest but seriously undermined by their own political masters.

Mr Bolsonaro swept to power on a populist agenda backed by agricultural businesses and small farmers , many of whom believe too much of the Amazon region is protected and that environmental staff have too much influence. He has said he wants to weaken the laws protecting the forest and has attacked the civil servants who’s job it is to guard the trees. “They don’t want us to speak because we’ll say the truth, that conservation areas are being invaded and destroyed, there are many people marking out areas that should be protected”. Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro on Friday accused the state body responsible for tracking deforestation levels of disclosing false data, after preliminary numbers showed a dramatic rise in July.

“I am convinced that the data is a lie , and we will ask the president (of the organization) to come here and talk about it” Bolsonaro said on Friday morning during a meeting with foreign journalists.

The remarks come a day after Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research, Inpe, published preliminary satellite data showing deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest accelerated in the first half of July to 1,000 square kilometers, a jump of 68% from the entire month of July 2018.

Inpe said in a statement on Friday that it constantly monitors the quality of its deforestation data, which currently presents an accuracy rate of over 95%.

Last week, a group of seven scientific institutions, including the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, defended Inpe in an open letter to Bolsonaro and other top officials, saying it was of essential strategic importance that the deforestation numbers not be subject to interference.

But the Brazilian president said the data does not correspond to the truth, repeating that he believes Brazil suffers from an “environmental psychosis”. He angrily replied to one European journalist : “The Amazon is ours not yours”.

Leaked documents show that Jair Bolsonaro’s government intends to use the Brazilian president’s hate speech to isolate minorities living in the Amazon region. The PowerPoint slides, which democraciaAbierta has seen, also reveal plans to implement predatory projects that could have a devastating environmental impact.

The Bolsonaro government has as one of its priorities to strategically occupy the Amazon region to prevent the implementation of multilateral environmental projects for the rainforest, specifically the so called ‘Triple A’ project.

“Development projects must be implemented on the Amazon basin to integrate it into the rest of the national territory in order to fight off international pressure for the implementation of the so called ‘Triple A’ project. To do this, it is necessary to build the Trombetas River hydro electrical plant, the Obidos bridge over the Amazon River and the implementation of the BR-163 highway to the border with Suriname” one of the slides read
